Mandatory regulations
The following sections describe the mandatory regulations that govern
the installation and operation of the 8550 WSG system.
General precautions
If the 8550 WSG sustains damage requiring service, disconnect the
8550 WSG from the AC electrical outlet and refer servicing to an
authorized service provider.
Examples of damage requiring service include the following:
• The power cord, extension cord or plug has been damaged.
• Liquid has been spilled on the 8550 WSG or an object has fallen
into it.
• The 8550 WSG has been exposed to rain or water.
• The 8550 WSG has been dropped or damaged.

To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment,
observe the following:
• Place the 8550 WSG away from radiators, heat registers, stoves,
amplifiers, or other products that produce heat.
• Avoid inserting foreign objects through openings in the
8550 WSG.
• Never place the 8550 WSG in a wet location.
Precautions for installing and maintaining the 8550 WSG
Observe the following precautions to reduce the risk of electric shock
or damage when installing or maintaining the 8550 WSG.
• The installation and routine maintenance of the 8550 WSG must be
performed by individuals who are knowledgeable about the
procedures, precautions, and hazards associated with equipment
containing hazardous energy levels.
• Power down the 8550 WSG and disconnect all AC power cords
before removing any access covers for non-hot plug areas.
• Do not replace non-hot plug components while power is applied to
the product. First, shut down the product and disconnect all AC
power cords,
• Verify that the AC power supply branch circuit that provides power
to the rack is not overloaded. This will reduce the risk of personal
injury, fire, or damage to the equipment. The total rack load should
not exceed 80% of the branch circuit rating. Consult the electrical
authority having jurisdiction over your facility wiring and
installation requirements.

Power cords
To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to the equipment,
observe the following:
• You must use a power cord rated for the 8550 WSG and for the
voltage and current marked on the electrical ratings label of the
8550 WSG. The voltage and current rating of the cord must be
greater than the voltage and current rating marked on the
8550 WSG.
• Do not place objects on AC power cords or cables. Arrange them
so that no one may accidentally step on or trip over them.
• Do not pull on a cord or cable. When unplugging from the electrical
outlet, grasp the cord by the plug.
• Make sure that the total ampere rating of all products plugged into
an extension cord or power strip does not exceed 80% of the
ampere ratings limit for the extension cord or power strip.
• Do not disable the power cord grounding plug. The grounding plug
is an important safety feature.
• Plug the power cord into a grounded (earthed) electrical outlet.
Power supplies
Installation of the 8550 WSG must comply with local and regional
electrical regulations governing the installation of information
technology equipment by licensed electricians. The 8550 WSG is
designed to operate in installations covered by NFPA 70, 1999 Edition
(National Electric Code) and NFPA-75, 1992 code for Protection of
Electronic Computer/Data Processing Equipment). See table A-1 for
electrical power ratings.
Caution — Use a regulating UPS to protect the 8550 WSG from
power fluctuations and temporary interruptions.

Hot-plug power supplies are not designed to be removed or installed
with AC power connected to the power supply. To reduce the risk of
electric shock or damage to the equipment when handling hot-plug
power supplies, observe the following:
• Install the power supply before connecting the power cord to the
power supply.
• Unplug the power cord before removing the power supply from the
8550 WSG.
• If the system has multiple sources of power, you must unplug all
AC power cords from the power supplies to completely disconnect
power from the system.
• Verify that the external power source connected to the 8550 WSG
matches the type of power source indicated on the electrical ratings
label.
UPS Products
To reduce the risk of electric shock and/or equipment damage when
installing or servicing UPS products, observe the following:
• The installation of options and routine maintenance of UPS
products must be performed by trained service technicians who are
knowledgeable about the procedures, precautions, and hazards
associated with AC power products.
• Hardwired UPS products require a direct connection to a dedicated
AC branch circuit (AC mains). Connection should only be
performed by a licensed electrician.
• Do not operate a UPS that is disconnected from AC Power. Use the
TEST/ALARM RESET button to test the batteries. Disconnect all
protected loads before disconnecting the UPS from AC Power.
• Pluggable UPS products must be disconnected and unplugged from
AC power before servicing the product or replacing a non-hot plug
component.
• Do not overload the output of the UPS. The total connected load
should not exceed 80% of the rated output.
• Do not exceed the leakage current limit for the type of UPS in your
system.
• Do not exceed the maximum number of UPS products in any single
rack.
• Install the UPS only at the bottom of a rack.

Batteries
The 8550 WSG contains internal lithium manganese dioxide batteries
or vanadium pentoxide batteries. There is risk of fire and burns if the
battery pack is not handled properly. To reduce the risk of personal
injury, observe the following:
• Do not attempt to recharge the battery.
• Do not expose the battery to temperatures higher than 60°C
(140°F).
• Do not disassemble, crush, puncture, short external contacts, or
dispose of the battery in fire or water.
• Replace the battery only with the spare battery designated for this
product.
• Do not dispose of batteries with the general household waste. To
forward them to recycling or proper disposal, use the public
collection system.
Manual handling of equipment
To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment,
observe the following:
• Obtain adequate assistance to lift and stabilize the 8550 WSG
during installation or removal.
• Remove all pluggable power supplies and modules to reduce the
weight of the 8550 WSG.
• Remove all pluggable power supplies and modules to reduce the
weight of the 8550 WSG.
• Ensure the 8550 WSG is properly mated with the rails.

Rack installation precautions
To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment,
observe the following:
• The leveling jacks are extended to the floor.
• The full weight of the rack rests on the leveling jacks.
• The stabilizing feet are attached to the rack if it is a single-rack
installation.
• The racks are coupled together in multiple-rack installations.
• Only one component is extended at a time. A rack may become
unstable if more than one component is extended for any reason.
• You are careful when pressing the component rail release latches
and sliding the component into the rack. The slide rails could pinch
your fingertips.
• You load the rack from the bottom up and load the heaviest item
into the rack first.
• You do not attempt to move equipment racks without adequate
assistance, due to their height and weight.
• You do not attempt to move an equipment rack on an incline that is
greater than 10 degrees from horizontal.
• You do not attempt to move a fully loaded equipment rack.
Remove equipment from the rack before moving the rack not
attempt to recharge the battery.
Preventing electrostatic discharge and safety procedures
A discharge of static electricity from a finger or other conductor may
damage system boards or other static-sensitive devices. This type of
damage may reduce the life expectancy of the device.

To prevent electrostatic damage, do the following:
• Avoid hand contact by transporting and storing products in
static-safe containers.
• Keep electrostatic-sensitive parts in their containers until they
arrive at a static-free workstation.
• Place parts on a grounded surface before removing them from their
containers.
• Avoid touching pins, leads, or circuitry.
• Always be properly grounded when touching a static-sensitive
component or assembly.
Grounding methods to prevent electrostatic discharge
Use one or more of the following methods when you handle or install
electrostatic-sensitive parts:
• Use a wrist strap connected by a ground cord to a grounded
workstation or computer chassis. Wrist straps are flexible straps
with a minimum of 1 megohm ± 10% resistance in the ground
cords. To provide proper grounding, wear the strap snug against the
skin.
• Use heel straps, toe straps, or boot straps at standing workstations.
Wear the straps on both feet when standing on conductive floors or
dissipating floor mats.
• Use conductive field service tools.
• Use a portable field service kit with a folding static-dissipating
work mat.
If you do not have any of the suggested equipment for proper
grounding, have an authorized reseller install the part.

Guidelines for branch circuits
When you install more than one 8550 WSG, you may need to use
additional power distribution devices to safely provide power to all
devices. Observe the following guidelines:
• Balance the server power load between available AC supply branch
circuits.
• Do not allow the overall system AC current load to exceed 80% of
the branch circuit AC current rating.
• Do not use common power outlet strips.
• Provide a separate electrical circuit for the 8550 WSG.
Warning — To reduce the risk of personal injury, fire, or damage to
equipment, do not overload the AC supply branch circuit that
provides power to the rack. Consult the electrical authority having
jurisdiction over wiring and installation requirements of your facility.

1.1 Introduction
This document describes how to install the 8550 WSG and initialize
the 8550 WSG Management Portal so that you can perform
configuration and administration tasks. See the OmniAccess
8550 WSG Configuration and Administration Guide for information
on how to perform these tasks.
The 8550 WSG offers the following features:
• performance—Intel Processors and memory technology
• reliability—redundant hot pluggable hard drives, disk-based back
up, redundant power supplies, and redundant fans
• management—System Insight Display LEDs that provide status
monitoring for system health, integrated power monitoring, and
automatic recovery
1.2 8550 WSG deployment planning
The 8550 WSG can be deployed to virtualize any combination of the
following scenarios:
• virtualized internal services for external consumption
Internal web services are configured on the 8550 WSG and access
is provided to external users, such as partners.
• virtualized external services for internal consumption
External services are configured on the 8550 WSG to allow access
to internal users.
• internal services for internal consumption
Only web services published within an Enterprise are configured
on the 8550 WSG.
• internal services for internal consumption and virtualized external
services for internal consumption
The 8550 WSG is configured to allow internal web services for
internal consumption within an Enterprise, and virtualized external
services for internal consumption.
WS client applications do not have any direct knowledge or access to
WS applications that may exist behind the 8550 WSG. The 8550 WSG
drops any request for a service it has not been configured to virtualize.
