1. GENERAL
This document provides installation and maintenance
procedures for the ADTRAN Total Access 4303 DS3
Module (P/N 1200332L1, see Figure 1).
Revision History
This is the second release of this practice. This version
includes general documentation updates and the
addition of the DS3 Menu Tree.
Description
The Total Access 4303 DS3 Module is a member of the
Total Access 4303 family of integrated access products.
It provides a single channelized DS3 interface. The
module terminates all 28 DS1s of a channelized DS3
into the Total Access 4303 TDM backplane for use in
GR-303 applications or in a DACS. Any of the 28 DS1
circuits or the DS3 receive clock can serve as the
primary or backup timing source for the entire system.
The DS3 Module combines with the Total Access 4303
base unit and other Total Access 4303 modules to
support requirements calling for multiple DSX-1
circuits.
Figure 1. Total Access 4303 DS3 Module
Typical applications calling for Total Access 4303 and
the DS3 Module include the following:
•GR-303
Digital Access Cross Connect System (3/1/0
DACS). Any DS0 on any DS1 circuit can be
switched to any other DS0 on any other DS1 circuit.
DS3 Bandwidth Management. A DS3 circuit carry-
ing voice, data, and other traffic can have its pay-
load groomed and directed to the appropriate
interface inside the Total Access 4303 system.
Features
The DS3 Module includes the following features:
Provisioned by software only - no hardware
switches
Local and remote line and payload loopbacks as
well as QRSS test pattern available per port
Compliant with ANSI T1.102, ANSI T1.403,
AT&T 54016, and AT&T 62411

Functional Description
The DS3 Module will install into any of the first four
option slots (labeled 1 through 4) in the Total Access
4303 chassis. The status of the module can be viewed,
as well as the circuits to which it interfaces, via the
terminal menus. The terminal menus are accessible
through either a VT100 terminal connected to the Total
Access 4303 base unit’s control port or through a Telnet
session established through the base unit’s Ethernet
port. Use the terminal menu to configure the DS3
Module and to download application software.
The Total Access 4303 system is composed of a 19-inch
chassis housing, two power supplies, two SCUs, and
sixteen option slots. The DS3 Module’s physical
interface is provided on the Total Access 4303 chassis
backplane using the BNC Module (P/N 1200323L1).
The Total Access 4303 backplane delivers two
-48 VDC buses to the DS3 Module. The DS3 Module
operates with either or both buses active.
Physical Description
The front panel of the DS3 Module displays the module
name, part number, CLEI code and status LEDs. The
module name, part number, and CLEI code may also be
found through the terminal menus. The dimensions of
the card itself are approximately 6 inches in height, 0.88
inches in width, and 10 inches in depth.
Compliance
Table 1 shows the Compliance Codes for the Total
Access 4303 DS3 Module. The DS3 Module is NRTL
listed to the applicable UL standards. The DS3 Module
is to be installed in a restricted access location and in a
Type “B” or “E” enclosure only.
This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC rules.
Operation is subject to the following two conditions:
1. This device may not cause harmful interference.
2. This device must accept any interference received,
including interference that may cause undesired
operation.
Changes or modifications not expressly approved by
ADTRAN could void the user’s authority to operate this
equipment.
2. INSTALLATION
After unpacking the DS3 Module, inspect it for damage.
If damage has occurred, file a claim with the carrier,
then contact ADTRAN Customer Service (refer to
Warranty and Customer Service on page 11). If
possible, keep the original shipping container for
returning the DS3 Module for repair or for verification
of shipping damage.
Shipping Contents
The contents include the following items:
•DS3 Module
DS3 Module Job Aid
Electronic modules can be damaged by static electrical
discharge. Before handling modules, wear an antistatic
wrist strap to prevent damage to electrical components.
Place modules in antistatic packing material when
transporting or storing.
Instructions for Installing the Module
Follow the steps below to install the module.
NOTE
Hot insertion of the module is permissable.

HANDLING PRECAUTIONS REQUIRED.
61200333L1-5B 3
1. If present, remove the cover plate from the appro-
priate option slot (labeled 1-4) of the Total Access
4303 chassis.
2. Position the module to fit in the lower and upper
grooves.
3. Slide the module into the option slot pressing
equally on the top and bottom of the front panel
until the module is firmly positioned against the
back of the chassis.
4. Push in the ejector on the lower left-hand side of
the module to finish seating the module.
Auto-detection of Modules
The Total Access 4303 SCU automatically detects the
presence of the DS3 Module when the module is
installed into the system. Rebooting is not required.
Wiring Connections
The DS3 physical interface is provided on the Total
Access 4303 chassis backplane using the BNC Module
(P/N 1200323L1). This module provides a dual 75-ohm
BNC connector.
Font Panel LEDs
See Table 2 for a description of the front panel LEDs.
3. PROVISIONING
The DS3 Module can be configured and controlled from
a variety of sources, including the following:
The terminal menus, allowing detailed configura-
tion, status, and diagnostics
SNMP, primarily for reporting alarm conditions
and system status (not currently supported)
NOTE
The remainder of this document describes the
menu items available when managing the DS3
Module via the terminal menus.
The Terminal Menus
The terminal menus are available by using either a
VT100 terminal attached to the Total Access 4303
active SCU’s craft port, the chassis’ ADMIN port, or a
Telnet session established through the SCU’s Ethernet
port. The Total Access 4303 System Manual, Section 6
(DLP-610) provides detailed instructions on using any
of these management approaches.
Terminal Menu Structure
The
Total Access 4303
uses a hierarchical menu
structure to provide access to all of its features. The top-
most menu level leads to submenus which are grouped
by functionality. All menu items display in the terminal
window. Figure 2 illustrates the DS3 menu tree.

ADTRAN TOTAL ACCESS 4303 DS3 Installation and Maintenance

Type
Installation and Maintenance

ADTRAN TOTAL ACCESS 4303 DS3 combines with the Total Access 4303 base unit and other Total Access 4303 modules to support requirements calling for multiple DSX-1 circuits. It includes extensive performance monitoring of the DS3 or individual DS1 circuits, inherent DACS capability, and compliance with ANSI T1.102, ANSI T1.403, AT&T 54016, and AT&T 62411. Provisioned by software only, the device does not require any hardware switches, and it offers local and remote line and payload loopbacks as well as QRSS test pattern available per port.
