1 Introduction
1.1 Euro-500T Handy cash register technical parameters
The Euro-500T Handy is a portable electronic cash register with the following technical parameters:

1.2 System configuration
The Euro-500T Handy is designed as a portable electronic cash register. The main parameters of a portable cash register are: low
weight, small size and a guarantee of longevity without an external connection.
The E-500N 16-bit micro-controller with 11 I/O ports and 2 portable channels is the center of the cash register. The cash register
program is stored in the 256 kB EPROM. Depending on the program version in EPROM memory, the micro-controller works with
RAM memory with a capacity of either 128 or 512 kB.

2 Circuit schemes and functions
2.1 Connection circuits
2.1.1 External power supply
230 V, 50-60 Hz/12 V 1200 mA network adapter functions as an external power supply.
It has two main functions:
the cash register is connected directly to a 230 V/50 Hz ground socket
recharging of the internal accumulator is provided through the primary connection circuit
2.1.2 Primary connection circuit
If the external power supply is used, the primary connection circuit provides for recharging of the internal accumulator and for
connecting of the cash register. The basic component of this circuit is a universal MC34167 (5 A) unidirectional inverter with a
built-in high-voltage and thermal protection. The high-voltage protection operates at 6,5 A. Being a switching supply with a
voltage oscillation frequency of 72 kHz, it prevents network interference. Its 80% efficiency provides for the effective voltage
conversion and low loss of heat (minimum requirements for circuit cooling).

2.1.3 Voltage stabilizer
To reduce the amount of power, logical circuits of the cash register are divided into two groups:
1. the group connected by VCC voltage, which can be switched on only by a PWSWR switch
2. the group connected by VCC1 voltage, which can be switched by the micro-processor only when printing,
communicating and recording into the fiscal memory
The U14 voltage stabilizer functions as a means to switch on and stabilize a VCC connecting voltage for the first group of the cash
register logical circuits. The circuit was designed to be switched on by a PWRSW on/off switch connected through AVA 5400-2P-S 2-
pin connector. T14, T15, and T16 transistors produce VCC1 voltage for the second group of logical circuits. They are operated by a
micro-processor SAVEPWR signal. An integrated U12 circuit controls the values of the battery voltage. If the voltage gets too low it
automatically generates the signal for switching off the supply.
To keep current time and data stored in RAM memory, the cash register is supplied with a reserve BT1 battery. When the cash register
is switched on the battery is being recharged through R9 resistor and when the cash register is switched off it serves as a supply of the
reserve voltage.

Measured values:
VBAT1: 6,0 V +0,3 V -1 V; when using the internal accumulator without the connected external adapter
(the supply is automatically switched off at a voltage of 5 V),
6,9 V ±0,2 V; when using the lead accumulator with the connected external adapter.
VBAT1: 7,6 V +0,9 V, -1 V; when using the internal NiMh accumulator without the connected external adapter
(the supply is automatically switched off at a voltage of 6,6 V),
8,4 V +0,2 V, -0,6 V; when using NiMh accumulator with the connected external adapter.
VRAM: 4,8 V ±0,05 V; when the cash register is switched on (VCC = 5 V),
3,6 V +0,5 V -0,1 V; when the cash register is switched off (VCC = 0 V).
Note: The removal of the JP1 jumper when the cash register is switched off will cause the deletion of all data in RAM memory and in
the current time circuit.

2.1.4 Printer connection circuit
The printer connection circuit stabilizes the VH connecting voltage for the printer power circuits. This voltage is at the same time
the input voltage for the secondary connection circuit.
To guarantee the security, the supply is controlled by LVOFF/NMI signal too (switching off at the drop of a battery voltage). The
micro-processor activates the VH voltage circuit with a SAVEPWR signal only when the cash register is not in the save or
standby mode. A cut-off of D15 diode by JPB3 jumper occurs only when using the lead battery.
Measured values:
It is possible to measure VH voltage only when printing or testing (test 910, see the chapter 5).
VH - in a version with the lead battery; the VH values are very close to those of VBAT1 given in the chapter 2.1.3,
- in a version with NiMh battery; comparing the VBAT1 and VH values, the latter are lower approximately
by 0,8 - 1 V (loss in D15 diode).

2.1.5 Secondary connection circuit
The secondary connection circuit produces the voltage necessary for work with the fiscal memory.
The secondary connection circuit functions as a switching supply with 87% efficiency and a switching frequency of 33 kHz. VH
voltage becomes an input voltage of the secondary connection circuit. The output voltage of this circuit is 13,5 V. The inverter
contains a high-voltage and thermal protection. The high-voltage protection activates when the value of power supply is higher
than 1,35 A.

2.1.6 Circuit for connecting the fiscal memory
When using the fiscal memory, a production of the voltages for programming, verification, and reading data from this memory is
inevitable. The voltages are produced with a help of the following circuit.
Measured values:
VPP-GEN = log. 0 VFP: 4,8 V ±0,1 V VFD: 4,8 V ±0,1 V (independent on SAWEPWR)
VPP-GEN = log. 1 VFP: 13 V ±0,5 V VFD: 6,4 V ±0,15 V (SAVEPWR = log. 1)

2.1.7 Power supplies characterisation
VH connecting of the printer power circuits and of the secondary connection circuits

The E-500N 16-bit micro-controller used in the Euro-500T Handy cash register secures complete control over the cash register activity.

The EPROM-type memory, with a capacity of 256 kB, functions as a program memory. RAM 128 kB static memory (68C1000,
66C1024), whose capacity can be extended to up to 512 kB, is used as a data memory. The program memory (EPROM) is
activated with a CS0 signal. The data memory (SRAM) is activated with a CS1 signal.
The Euro-500T Handy cash register uses the data memory with an ultra-low input rate that lowers the requirements for connection and
prolongs data storage in the memory by means of a reserve accumulator. The choice of other types with the same capacity can
aggravate the parameters of memory operations, cause a higher rate of bus interference, and shorten the data storage period.
Therefore, only the use of original types of memory is recommended.
The reserve accumulator keeps the memory connected so that RAM memory can store data even when the cash register is
switched off.

2.2.3 System start and outage
For the successful start of the system, initialize the micro-controller and all logical circuits correctly. When the system is about to be
switched off, it is required to store all important data plus to enable the transmission of the micro-controller and logical circuits into a
secure position.
The connection of the E-500N micro-controller has been implemented so that it is powered by a reserve NiCd battery after the cash
register is switched off. Its power supply is VRAM (power consumption is about 500 nA). For correct switching on/off of the system,
it is necessary to know how to activate the Reset and STBY signals properly. These signals are controlled by the Reset and STBY
controllers.
The Reset controller is a circuit with these functions:
reliable E-500N micro-controller initialization when the cash register is switched off by means of active Reset signal
level
reset signal activation during the drop of VCC power supply down to the circuit threshold level
The active level of the Reset signal is log.0. The active level rate is min. 150 ms.
The circuit threshold level is a voltage from which the Reset signal is generated. The value of this level is very important if proper activity
of the logical circuits is to be secured. The V6309/L of this cash register has its threshold level at 4,5V. The V6309/L circuit resets the
CPU when the power supply is lower than 4,5 V.
The standby controller is a circuit with these functions:
reliable abandonment of E-500N micro-controller standby position when the cash register is being switched on
STBY signal activation for moving to standby position of E-500N during the drop of VCC power supply down to the
circuit threshold level
The active level of the STBY signal is log.0.
The V6340/F circuit of this cash register has its threshold level at 4,5 V. The V6340/F circuit activates the CPU standby mode when
the power supply is lower than 4,5 V. In the case of a permanent state of low power supply, the CPU is kept in continual standby
position too.
2.2.4 Current time circuit
It is necessary to ensure the function of current time in the cash register in order to continually keep the date and time current. This
is provided for by V3021 circuit.
The V3021 circuit contains:
• reader
• shift register
• voltage regulator
• voltage detector
• communication detector
The communication between V3021 and
E-500N is stated to be through D0 conductor
and RD and HWR control signals. The circuit
is activated by a CS2 signal.
The circuit can operate even when the cash
register is switched off using the reserve NiCd
battery. In this case, the power consumption
is max. 500nA. 2,5 Vis minimum reserve
power supply.

2.3.1 Print control circuits
The Euro-500T Handy cash register has a built-in CITIZEN MLT-288 electrothermal printer. In order to secure correct operation, it is
important to have control over:
signals for correct printing operations
printer stepping motor
journal winder
signals to secure printer correct operation and protection
All these operations are carried out by following circuits:

The electrothermal printer and displays are connected directly to the interface card (chapter 4.3 and 7.7) which interconnects all the
mechanisms situated in the upper, tip-up part of the cash register. Two 15-conductor cables, situated in the grooves of the tip-up
construction, connect the printer to the mainboard.

2.3.2 Keyboard
The Euro-500T Handy keyboard consists of 31 keys laid out in four lines and eight columns. The keyboard activity is based on
transmitting and decoding of DG0-DG2 signals from E-500N and on scanning of ROW1-ROW4 signals. DG0-DG2 signals are decoded
by 1-10 decoder (7442 circuit). The circuit outputs 0-7 generate signals for the particular keyboard columns. Scanning of ROW1-
ROW4 signals helps to identify the pressed key.
The keyboard keys are actually switching units consisting of plastic touch-points and silicon rubber with projections which are
made from conductive material (carbon rubber). When the key is pressed, the force of the finger is shifted onto the silicon rubber
which creates a conductive circuit between the carbon facets. It is enabled by the conductive projections, directly on a printed
circuit.
There is also a network switch on the printed circuit which is connected to the PWRSW connector of the mainboard by a 2-
conductor cable. All other signals between the keyboard and the mainboard are conducted by an FFC 16-conductor cable which
is inserted to the KEYBOARDCON connector on a keyboard side and to the KEYB connector on a mainboard side.

2.3.3 Displays
The Euro-500T Handy has two display units. One is for the customer, the other for the cashier. Both displays can be segment
LCD type, or the display for cashier is alphanumeric LCD type and the display for customer is segment LCD type.
Alphanumeric display
The operations on the display are administered by the 87LPC762 micro-controller, used only for this purpose, which accepts data sent
from the E-500N main micro-controller through a serial link (SEL, CLK, and DATA signals). This processor is situated on the detached
printed circuit board (PCB) under the module of the alphanumeric display. The description of the control signals for the display can be
found in the chapter 2.1.1, Table 1.
The two-line alphanumeric display of LCD-type is installed with a back-light. Up to 20 characters can be displayed per line. The
display works as a separate printed circuit board with its own display, display back-light and its controller.
The choice to use the back-light for both displays is made on the keyboard (in X mode by pressing the [MULTIPLY] button).
The choice of a particular back-light mode depends on the version of the cash register. The back-light of the alphanumeric
display is powered by max. 150 mA; the back-light on the segmented display by 200 mA.
LCD display
It is the LCD-type display with 96 segments. A switching function of COM1 and COM2 signals enables the regulation of the cash
register display. Each display is controlled by its own NJU6432B-type controller.
If requested, it is possible to supply the particular display units with back-light panels (D1) which are controlled by the display
controller (SEG49, SEG50). On/off switching is operated from the keyboard (in X mode by pressing the [MULTI] button). The
maximum power for one back-light panel equals 250 mA.
87LPC762 micro-controller
The Euro-500T Handy cash register uses a 87LPC762 8-bit micro-controller, which provides for complete control over the LCD displays.

The LCD-type segmented display consists of 96 segments. The display segments are activated by COM1 and COM2 signals. The
display is controlled by the NJU6432B-type 53-segmented controller with a switching function. It enables the regulation of up to
106 segments.

2.3.4 Communication circuits
The uro-500T Handy cash register is equipped with communication circuits that enable it to work with a computer, a scanner,
electronic scales, and an external PC keyboard.
Communication with a computer is possible through the RS232C serial interface. The correct setup of the cash register number is one
of the crucial parameters for its communication with the computer (see Programming manual Flag programming). Communication
with a computer is possible in any mode of the cash register, provided that no other operation is being carried out at that time (e.g. non-
finished sale).
Cooperation between the cash register and a computer and a scanner can be successful on the condition that both communicating
appliances are identical in terms of the communication parameters setting. The Euro-500T Handy cash register provides the opportunity
to set up these parameters in the cash register programming mode (see Users manual Flags programming).
Adjustable transmission parameters for both communicating appliances are defined in the following way:
•
communication speed for computer programmable 9600 or 38 400 Bd
•
communication speed for scanner programmable from 1200 to 19 200 Bd
•
number of data bits 8
•
parity none
•
stop bit 1
•
terminative flag for scanner programmable, CR, LF, or CR + LF
Communication with the electronic scales has these defined parameters:
•
communication speed 9 600 Bd
•
number of data bits 8
•
parity none
•
stop bit 1
•
communication protocol Euroscales or MORCAN-type scales
The cash register is able to communicate with any external PS/2-type PC keyboard.
