1 Introduction
Thank you for purchasing an infrared thermometer PCE-889A from PCE Instruments.
This device is suitable for several areas such as industry, trade and crafts, i. e. heating, ventilation and air
conditioning or different control and monitoring areas, in the automotive industry as well as many more
areas. This thermometer is very easy to use. It emits a red laser beam that helps you with targeting and
enables you to easily make temperature measurements at objects which are difficult to access, moving or
hot. Another useful feature of this meter is the display with backlight. Moreover, you can adjust the
emissivity to your measuring object. Please note that the target to be measured must be larger than the
calculated measuring spot. The smaller the object to be measured, the closer should you be to measuring
target.
2 Safety notes
Please read this manual carefully and completely before you use the device for the first time. The device
may only be used by qualified personnel and repaired by PCE Instruments personnel. There is no
warranty of damages or injuries caused by non-observance of the manual.
- The device may only be used in approved temperature ranges.
- The case should only be opened by qualified personnel of PCE Instruments. Do not disassemble the
device.
- The instrument should never be placed with the user interface facing an object (e.g. keyboard side on a
table).
- You must not make any technical changes to the device.
- The appliance should only be cleaned with a damp cloth / use only pH-neutral cleaner.
- Be very careful when the laser beam is on.
- Never target the laser beam at people or animals.
- Make sure that the laser beam does not strike the eye from a reflective surface.
- Do not use the device near explosive gases.
- It is not recommended to use this device for the measurement of shiny or polished metallic surfaces
such as stainless steel, aluminium, etc.
- Do not measure through any transparent surfaces such as glass.
- If the surface to be measured is covered with frost, oil, grime, etc., clean it before measurement.
- Do not use any abrasives or solvents for cleaning. Swipe the device with a dry, soft cloth.
- Do not immerse the device in water.
- Make sure that the device is stored in a place where the ambient temperature and humidity is not higher
than the values specified in the technical data.

5 Instructions
5.1 Measurement
- Hold the handle of the meter and target at the surface to be measured.
- Pull and hold the trigger to switch the device on. The “SCAN” icon will then appear and the
measurement starts.
- The surface temperature measured appears in the display.
- Release the trigger. The “HOLD” icon appears and the reading is held for several seconds.
- The device switches off automatically after 20 seconds of inactivity.
Note: In case of different ambient temperatures, allow at least 30 minutes for the device to adapt to the
ambient temperature.
The laser is used for targeting only. To save battery voltage, the laser can be deactivated when you want
to measure from small distances.
5.2 Key functions
- : Press this key to switch between °F and °C.
- : Press this key when you are in measurement mode to switch the backlight on or off.
When in HOLD mode, press this key to activate or deactivate the laser.
- : Press this key to display the MAX and MIN measurement value. Press it for approx. 3 seconds,
until the icon flashes in the display. Release the key to enter emissivity mode. You can then use the
and keys to adjust the emissivity. You can return to normal measurement mode by pressing
again.
5.3 Finding a hot spot
To trace a hot spot, first target the thermometer at a spot outside the area to be measured. After doing so,
move the thermometer up and down in the target area until you find the hot spot.
5.4 Battery replacement
- You must replace the battery when the icon appears.
- To do so, open the battery compartment, insert the 9 V battery correctly and close the battery
compartment.

6 Further information
6.1 Measurement principle
- This infrared thermometer is designed for measuring surface temperatures.
- The optical sensor converts energy into a temperature reading by means of a detector. This reading will
then be shown in the LC display.
- The only purpose of the laser is targeting.
6.2 Measuring spot
- The object to be measured should be larger than the size of the measuring spot calculated on the basis
of the field of view diagram below.
- The smaller the target object, the closer the device should be to the object. This is to ensure an accurate
measurement.
- If you are in doubt about the accuracy, make sure that the target is at least twice as large as the size of
the measuring spot.
- The farther the distance from the measuring object, the larger will the measuring spot of the measuring
area be.
The meter’s field of view is 30:1. This means, for instance,
that the diameter of the measuring spot should be at least 10
mm when the distance from the measuring spot is 300 mm.
For further distances and diameters see the field of view
diagram on the right.
6.3 Emissivities
Most organic materials and painted or oxidised surfaces (90 %) have an emissivity of 0.95, which is the
default setting of this device.

7 Disposal
For the disposal of batteries, the 2006/66/EC directive of the European Parliament applies. Due to the
contained pollutants, batteries must not be disposed of as household waste. They must be given to
collection points designed for that purpose.
In order to comply with the EU directive 2012/19/EU we take our devices back. We either re-use them or
give them to a recycling company which disposes of the devices in line with law.
