Walkie-talkie Etiquette
Your walkie-talkie's 8 channels are shared on a "take turns" basis.
This means other groups may be talking on the channels. For
uninterrupted communications, follow the steps below:
1. Use the Mon button to check activity on the channel before
talking.
2. Don't talk over someone who is already using the channel – your
message may not be completely heard. Try changing the Channel
and Interference Eliminator Code to avoid channel congestion.
Note: Since the channels are shared, your conversations will not be private
and you may hear others talking.
Talk Range
Talkabout TA288 walkie-talkies have been designed to maximize
performance and improve transmission range in the field. It is
recommended that you do not use the walkie-talkies closer than 1.5
meters apart because of heavy interference.
Talk range depends on the terrain. These are line of sight walkie-
talkies and talk range will be affected by concrete structures, heavy
foliage and operating walkie-talkies indoors and in vehicles.
Optimal Range Medium Range Minimal Range
Optimal range occurs in flat, open areas with up to 3 kilometres of
coverage. Medium range occurs when buildings and trees are in the
way. Minimal range occurs when dense foliage and mountains
obstruct the communication path.
Optional Motorola Original Accessories
There are many audio and carrying accessories available for Talkabout
TA288 walkie-talkies. Receive incoming messages in privacy with an
Earbud or Flexible Ear Receiver. Whether it's an Arm Pack, Belt Case,
Bum Bag, Shoulder Pack or Waterproof Bag, Motorola has a great
carrying case for you! For information contact place of purchase.
Use Of Audio Accessories:
When using optional audio accessories with your walkie-talkie, we
recommend that the volume level be kept at a comfortable listening
level. Before you place the accessory on your head or in your ear, turn
the volume down.
Note: Talkabout TA288 walkie-talkies use single pin accessories and therefore
cannot use the same audio accessories as other Talkabout walkie-
talkies.

Care and Safety
!
The information provided in this document supercedes the general
safety information contained in user guides published prior to January
1st 1999.
For information regarding walkie-talkie use in a hazardous
atmosphere please refer to the Factory Mutual (FM) Approval Manual
Supplement or Instruction Card which is included with walkie-talkie
models that offer this capability.
To clean the walkie-talkie, wipe with a soft cloth dampened with water.
Don't use cleaners or solvents on the walkie-talkie, they can harm the
body and leak inside, causing permanent damage. Battery contacts
may be wiped with a dry, lint-free cloth.
If the walkie-talkie gets wet, turn it off and remove batteries
immediately. Dry battery compartment with a soft cloth to minimize
potential water damage. Leave cover off the battery compartment
overnight or until completely dry. Do not use the walkie-talkie until
completely dry.
Do not use the walkie-talkie where iron-filings, swarf or other
materials may be attracted by the magnet in the loud speaker. This
could impair performance and cause permanent damage.
Exposure To Radio Frequency Energy
!
Your Motorola walkie-talkie, which generates and radiates radio
frequency (RF) electromagnetic energy (EME), is designed to comply
with the following national and international standards and guidelines
regarding exposure of human beings to radio frequency
electromagnetic energy:
FCC Report and Order FCC 96-326 (August, 1996)
American National Standards Institute (C95-1 - 1992)
National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP
- 1986)
International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection
(ICNRP - 1986)
European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization
(CENELEC)
Env. 50166 - 1 1995E - Human Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields
Low Frequency (0Hz to 10kHz)
Env. 50166 - 2 1995E - Human Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields
High Frequency (10kHz to 300Ghz)
Proceeding of SC211/8 1996 - Safety Considerations for Human
Exposure to E.M.F's from Mobile Telecommunications Equipment
(M.T.E.) in the Frequency Range 30 MHz - 6GHz (E.M.F.-
Electromagnetic Fields)
To assure optimal walkie-talkie performance and that human exposure
to radio frequency electromagnetic energy is within the guidelines set
forth in the above standards, always adhere to the following
procedures:
Operation and EME Exposure For Portable Two-Way Radios
or Walkie talkies:
When transmitting with a portable radio or walkie-talkie, hold radio or
walkie-talkie in a vertical position with its microphone 2.5 to 5.0 cm
away from your mouth. Keep antenna at least 2.5 cm from your head
and body when transmitting.
English 8
If you wear a portable radio or walkie-talkie on your body, ensure that
the antenna is at least 2.5 cm from your body when transmitting.
Electromagnetic Interference/Compatibility:
Nearly every electronic device is susceptible to electromagnetic
interference (EMI) if inadequately shielded, designed or otherwise
configured for electromagnetic compatibility.
To avoid electromagnetic interference and/or compatibility conflicts,
turn off your walkie-talkie in any facility where posted notices instruct
you to do so. Hospitals or health care facilities may be using
equipment that is sensitive to external RF energy.
When instructed to do so, turn off your walkie-talkie when on board
an aircraft. Any use of a radio or walkie-talkie must be in accordance
with airline regulations or crew instructions.
Operational Caution
!
Damaged Antennas:
Do not use any radio or walkie-talkie that has a damaged antenna. If a
damaged antenna comes in contact with the skin, a minor burn may
result.
Batteries:
All batteries can cause property damage and/or bodily injury such as
burns if a conductive material such as jewellery, keys or beaded chains
touches exposed terminals. The material may complete an electrical
circuit (short circuit) and become quite hot. Exercise care in handling
any charged battery, particularly when placing it inside a pocket, purse
or other container with metal objects.
Operational Warning
!
For Vehicles With an Air Bag:
Do not place a portable radio or walkie-talkie in the area over an air
bag or in the air bag deployment area. Air bags inflate with great
force. If a portable radio or walkie-talkie is placed in the air bag
deployment area and the air bag inflates, the radio or walkie-talkie
may be propelled with great force and cause serious injury to
occupants of vehicle.
Potentially Explosive Atmospheres:
Turn your walkie-talkie OFF when in any area with a potentially
explosive atmosphere, unless it is a type especially qualified for such
use (for example, Factory Mutual Approved). Sparks in a potentially
explosive atmosphere could cause an explosion or fire resulting in
bodily injury or even death.
Batteries:
Do not replace or change batteries in a potentially explosive
atmosphere. Contact sparking may occur while installing or removing
batteries and cause an explosion.
Blasting Caps and Areas:
To avoid possible interference with blasting operations, turn your
walkie-talkie OFF near electrical blasting caps or in a "blasting area"
or in areas posted: "Turn off two-way radio". Obey all signs and
instructions.
Note: Areas with potentially explosive atmospheres referred to above
include fuelling areas such as below deck on boats, fuel or chemical
transfer or storage facilities; areas where the air contains chemicals or
particles, such as grain, dust, or metal powders; and any other area
where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine.
Areas with potentially explosive atmospheres are often, but not
always, marked.
