Panasonic improves blood pressure assessment
Dear customer, congratulation on the purchase of this Panasonic blood pressure monitor.
Since 1992, Panasonic has been providing blood pressure measuring devices to our
customers in Europe. The product you have purchased has passed our strict quality
control, and shall help you manage your daily blood pressure.
We wish you all the best for your health.
Thanks to modern medical technology measuring blood pressure has now become
uncomplicated. The user-friendliness makes measuring a lot easier, but very often a
mistake can occur when assessing the measured values. In the majority of cases it is not the
whole blood pressure picture that is taken into account but only a single measurement. The
result of this is that more than 70 % of all hypertension sufferers are insufficiently treated or
not treated at all (Source: World Health Organisation (WHO)).
Now Panasonic revolutionizes the treatment of high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is not a fixed parameter!
The blood pressure fluctuations of this example of a day profile show why a single value is

Points of interest and information concerning blood
pressure and high blood pressure
The treatment of high blood pressure is one of the most successful forms of treatment in
modern medicine. This applies not only when preventing complications due to high blood
pressure, but also with regard to treating damage following a stroke or heart attack.
Recent studies have proven beyond all doubt that:
1. high blood pressure can be successfully lowered in patients of every age and
2. blood pressure should be stabilized at a low level.
The findings of major recent studies have made it necessary to adjust the formerly
acceptable limits (the World Health Organization (WHO), 1999). In other words, the
traditional limit of 160/95 mmHg as the borderline between normal and high blood pressure
has now been reduced. Consequently, the normal values have been “lowered” by WHO, the
German Hypertension Society and the American Hypertension Committee.
Upper value (SYS.) 140 mmHg
Lower value (DIA.) 90 mmHg
Blood pressure exceeding both or either of
these limits is considered hypertension.
The values should be confirmed by
repeated measurements.
A pathologically high blood pressure is now
defined as follows:
Systolic value of 140
mmHg or more and/or
a diastolic value of 90 mmHg or more–
provided that these values are repeatedly
obtained under standard conditions, i.e. at
rest (measured at three different times on
two different days).
This definition applies regardless of age. What formerly constituted a borderline area with
systolic values betw
een 140 and 159 mmHg and diastolic values between 90 and 94 mmHg
is no longer considered to be a “grey area”, but is quite clearly classed as high blood
pressure. This consequently means that medical treatment is required for blood pressure
values in excess of 140/90 mmHg.

If the product will not be used for a long time, remove the batteries.
Batteries should be used before their expiration date.
Use after the expiration date may result in injury or staining of the surrounding area due to
generation of heat, bursting, or leakage.
For Batteries
The frequency of use for batteries is approximately 500 measurements (3 times per day)
with fresh Panasonic alkaline batteries (AA-size LR6 alkaline batteries). (Measurement
conditions: Room temperature 23°C; Pressurized to 170 mmHg; Upper arm circumference:
30 cm)
If batteries other than alkaline batteries are used or batteries are used in a cold room, and
when measuring a person with high blood pressure, battery life may be dramatically shorter.
*Use alkaline batteries. (Panasonic Oxyride batteries can also be used.)
Be sure to replace batteries once a year to prevent battery leakage.
Please help protect our environment by respecting national and/or local
recycling regulations when disposing of the device and the batteries at the
end of their useful lives.

Preparing the SD memory card (continued)
Caution when using the SD memory card
Since the SD memory card is a precision device, do not leave it in a place with a high
temperature, exposed to direct sunlight, or where electromagnetic waves or static
electricity are generated.
Also, do not bend, drop, or apply strong vibration to it.
It is recommended to save the important measurement data on a PC or similar since the
data on the SD memory card may get damaged or erased. Panasonic is not liable for
any losses caused by the damaged or erased data in any way.
Do not touch the terminals on the reverse side of the SD memory card.
Regarding the usage of the measurement data, manage and handle under the
responsibility of the user, considering the privacy of the measurer.
The SD memory card has a write protect function. Writing and erasing of the data, and
formatting of the SD memory card will not be possible when the function is enabled.
It may damage not only the blood pressure monitor, but also the SD memory card if the
SD memory card is inserted in the wrong direction. Make sure to insert with the label
side facing forward.
The unit needs to check the folder structure of the stored data on the SD memory card
when the SD memory card is inserted. The
mark will flash on the display during the
check.
Do not operate while the mark is flashing.
Do not remove the SD memory card while writing the data. It may damage the stored
data.
Number of the measurements that can be stored on the SD memory card may differ
depending on the environment.
The data will not be able to playback correctly on the blood pressure monitor if the
image data or the folder in the SD memory card is edited, or the name of the data is
changed.

The cuff can be used on either upper arm.
<When wrapping
around right arm>
However, the difference in blood pressure between left
and right arm may be around 10 mmHg. Be sure to
always use the same arm. It is recommended to use
the arm with the higher blood pressure.
en11
English
Getting into the measurement position
Sit quietly and relax while taking measurements.
Take a measurement on a desk that will bring the
cuff to the height of the heart.
* Differences in height will cause differences in blood
pressure values.
1. Place the elbow on the table or on something similar.
2. Align the height of the cuff and the heart.
3. Relax with your palm facing up.
Use the same upper arm with the same posture at the same time every day.
We recommend three measurements a day.
First ....... Upon W
aking (Because, with almost no influence from body movement, the
blood pressure is closest to that at night.)
Second ... Before Lunch (Because, with no influence from the meal, it provides blood
pressure values close to the highest of the day.)
Third ....... At Bedtime (So as to obtain data close to your average blood pressure values
during the day.)
This way, by taking measurements morning, noon and night, you can use the unit to learn
the patterns of and monitor your blood pressure.
In the following situations, accurate measurements cannot be taken.
Within 1 hour after eating or drinking alcohol
Immediately after drinking coffee or tea, or smoking
In a moving vehicle
Immediately after exercising or taking a bath
(Wait at least 20 minutes and take a measurement while staying quiet.)
In cold places
(Take measurements at room temperatures around 20 °C.)
When you need to urinate
(Wait several minutes after urinating before taking measurements.)
Be sure to follow the following points for accurate measurements:
Do not move your body, arm, or fingertips.
Do not touch the main unit or the cuff during measurement.
Do not talk.
Do not use a cellular phone near the main unit.
Not following these points may make it impossible to obtain accurate measurements.

Taking a Reading
1. Press the Off/On Start button.
After the entire display has been lit, the cuff will be pressurized
and measurement will be taken automatically.
The pressure value, mark, and the time will be displayed.
The heart mark will flash and the unit will beep when pulse is
detected during depressurization.
2. After the measurement is completed, the unit will beep, and
the blood pressure value and pulse rate will be displayed.

values will flash for approximately 5 seconds.
The mark or mark will display after flashing for
5 seconds when movement of the body or irregular pulses were
detected during the measurement. (See pages en17 and en18.)
The “no.1” mark will be lit, and mark will flash.
The mark is displayed at the pulse rate display area when the
pulse rate could not be measured.
3. To store the measured values, proceed to page en14.
To complete the measurement, press the Off/On Start button.
* If you forget to switch off the unit it will do so automatically after
approx. 2 minutes.
Date and time is displayed when the display of date and time is
set to ON.

Taking a Reading (continued)
Taking a measurement with manual pressurization
Take a measurement with manual pressurization if appropriate pressurization is not
possible after repeated pressurization.
Value 30–40 mmHg higher than
expected systolic blood pressure
1. With the unit turned off, press the Off/On Start
button and hold it to pressurize the cuff to 30–40
mmHg higher value than the expected systolic blood
pressure.
The pressurization value on the display will increase
from 0 mmHg while holding down the Off/On Start
button.
It can be pressurized up to 280 mmHg.
CAUTION:
It may cause temporarily internal bleeding when
pressurized more than necessary.
2. Release the Off/On Start button.
When an Error Occurs During Measurement
A will appear on the display to indicate that measurement was
unsuccessful and should be performed again.
Before performing another measurement, always press the Off/On Start button to turn off
the unit and make sure to allow a rest period of 4 to 5 minutes before starting again.
Advice:
In general, blood pressure measurements are lower for the second measurement
because you are less nervous and are more tranquil.
For people who easily get tense, measuring twice each time is very effective.
It is recommended to store all values when performing two measurements or more.
When taking two measurements, always stay quiet for 4 to 5 minutes after the first
measurement before taking the second measurement.
en14
English
Storing blood pressure readings
This unit can store a maximum of 540 measurement values.
