The rechargeable battery is classified as a lithium ion battery in international transport law. Lithium ion batteries are
classified as a dangerous good at the time of compiling this transport regulation and are included in the dangerous
goods classification 9 Miscellaneous hazardous substances and items. In addition to the regulations named here,
other national regulations may exist. These must also be observed.
A prerequisite for transport is passing a transport test according to the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, part III,
subsection 38.8. This test has been carried out successfully.
Requirements of international transport law must be met with every transport of the rechargeable batteries.
The special regulation SV 188 (ADR) cannot be applied to the rechargeable battery.
The following types of transport are possible:
UN number Designation Explanation
UN 3480 Lithium ion battery Rechargeable battery alone without the associated machine.
UN 3481*
Lithium ion battery packaged
with equipment.
Machine with at least one enclosed rechargeable battery.
UN 3481* Lithium ion battery in
equipment.
Rechargeable battery is built into the machine during
transport.
*Transport according to UN 3481 is not recommended.
Transport of undamaged rechargeable batteries according to ADR, UN 3480
Packaging:
Use UN-approved packaging
Use specially tested dangerous goods adhesive tape
Comply with packaging group II
Comply with packaging instruction P903
Secure the rechargeable battery against short circuiting
Secure the rechargeable battery against unintentional movement
The inner packaging must completely enclose the rechargeable battery
Product identification of the package:
UN 3480
Hazard label 9 (size 10 x 10 cm)
Loading
The loader must check the packages for leak tightness and damage.
The vehicle driver shall guarantee transport safety. He must observe the restrictions for loading different goods
together and may not drive through any tunnels of class (E).
Securing the load
The load securing regulations are to be met.
Entering a vehicle with lighting equipment with an open flame is prohibited. In addition, the lighting equipment used
may not have any metal surface that could generate sparks.
It is prohibited for the vehicle driver or passenger to open a package with hazardous goods. Except for the vehicle
crew, no other persons may be taken along when transporting hazardous goods.
Transport
The sender must notify the transporter in writing of the dangerous goods.
The operator must carry along a transport document and the required equipment. The person who relinquishes the
dangerous good for transport and commissions a forwarding agent must fill out the transport document with all
required information. He is responsible for the contents.
The transport document should include the following information:
UN 3480
LITHIUM-ION-BATTERIES, 9, II, (E)
Number and description of the packages
Transport
3
Gross mass of the dangerous goods
Total quantity of the dangerous goods
Transport category 2
Indication of the total number of points
Name and address of the sender
Name and address of the recipient
Transport according to ADR 1.1.3.1.c)
The prerequisite for the use of the small quantities regulation according to ADR 1.1.3.1.c) is a gross weight of less
than 333 kg or a total number of points of less than 1000 points. Here, dangerous goods transports of small quantities,
which companies perform as a part of their main activities, are largely exempt from the regulations of the ADR. It is
important to distinguish here between supply transports and transports as a part of main activities. Supply transports
are not exempt from the regulations of the ADR.
For transports as a part of the main activity according to ADR 1.1.3.1.c), the following applies:
The transport is performed by the respective company as a part of its main activity and includes, for example,
deliveries for or returns from construction sites or deliveries in connection with measurements, repair jobs and
maintenance jobs.
No more than 333 kg gross weight or 1000 points are transported.
A release of the contents is to be avoided under normal transport conditions.
The operator is to be notified that he is transporting dangerous goods.
In the event of accidents or irregularities where the dangerous goods are at risk, the vehicle operator must
immediately notify the nearest authority (e.g. police).
Dealing with fire and open light sources is prohibited during loading work near packages and holding vehicles as
well as in the vehicles.
The load is to be secured so that the position to each other and to the vehicle can only change slightly.
A fire extinguisher of fire classification ABC (e.g. 2 kg dry powder extinguisher sealed and tested) is to be kept.
The fire extinguisher is to be attached to be easily accessible for the vehicle crew.
Transport of different dangerous goods
If different dangerous goods are transported at the same time, the maximum quantity is determined for facilitated
transport or for exemption by multiplying the respective quantities with the substance-specific factors. If the sum of
these products < 1000, then it is a small quantity.
Example:
You want to transport 120 liters of gasoline and 5 rechargeable batteries.
Gasoline and rechargeable batteries both have the substance-specific factor
of 3. 120 l x 3 + 9.1 kg x 3 = 387.3
This is a small quantity, since 387.3 < 1000.
Please bring damaged or defective rechargeable batteries to your dealer.
