SmartCal Routine Test
Preparation
•Beforethetestisperformed,SmartCaltestsubstanceandthethermohygrometermustbeacclimatizedtothe
ambient temperature of the moisture analyzer.
•Whenthetestisperformed,theheatingunitofthemoistureanalyzershouldbeatroomtemperature.
•Ifasensitivitytestneedstobedoneaswell,pleaseperformthesensitivitytestfirst(toavoidwaitingtimefor
cooling down).
•UseinstrumentpredefinedtestproceduresorsetinstrumenttotheSmartCaltestparameters:
–Switch-offtime:10minutes
– Drying program: standard drying
–Display:%MC
–Dryingtemperature:70,100,130or160°C
(Select the temperature closest to the drying temperature normally used)
Test Procedure
•Ifrequiredbyinstrumentmenuenterambienttemperatureandambienthumidity.
•Placethesamplepanhandlerwiththealuminumsampledishintheinstrumentandtare.
•RemoveaSmartCalstickfromtheblisterpack,openitanddistributetheentirecontentsevenlyoverthe
sample pan (whole pan covered with granules).
•Startthetestmeasurementimmediatelyafterdistributingthesample.
•Readthedisplayedresult(%MC,%MC
N
) from the instrument.
•IftheresultisshownasMC%recordambienttemperatureandambienthumidityaswell.
Evaluation
•Iftheunitofthedisplayedresultis%MC
N
,nonormalizationisneeded.Iftheunitofthedisplayedresultis
MC%normalizethedisplayedresult–usingtheambientconditionsrecordedabove–eithermanuallywith
normalizationtableorwiththeExcelmeasurementreport.
•Evaluatewhetherthenormalizedresultexceedsthedefinedcontrollimits.

•Ifthecontrollimitisexceeded,reduceerrorsources(seeSmartCalusermanual)andrepeatthetest
(after cooling down of the moisture analyzer).
•Ifthecontrollimitisexceededagain,reportsupervisorthatthecontrollimitwasnotmet.
•Letthemoistureanalyzercooldown,performweightandthentemperatureadjustment,letthemoisture
analyzer cool down and repeat the SmartCal test.
•Ifthecontrollimitisstillexceeded,reporttheproblemtothesupervisor.Optionally,contactMETTLER
TOLEDO’s service organization for advice.
•Markthemoistureanalyzeras“outofcontrollimits”.
