Configuring Patton M-ATA to send Fax or call with 3CX.
1. Ensure that you have created the PSTN line in 3CX Phone System first. Take note of the
Authentication ID field and the Authentication password that you have entered for the line
connected to the M-ATA adapter.
2. Connect the M-ATA adapter to the network and mains power supply. The device will boot up,
and providing you have DHCP installed on your network, will obtain an IP address. To get the
exact IP address, check the most recent DHCP lease, or alternatively use a network scanner to
find the device.
3. Now point your browser to the gateway’s configuration site: ‘http://x.x.x.x’, where “x.x.x.x” is
the IP address leased by the DHCP server to the adapter.
4. Once the page loads enter the standard password "root" and click on the “Authenticate”
button. This will provide the basic administration configuration version of the interface. Now
click on the “advanced” link on the top right hand side of the page. This will provide the
advanced administration configuration version of the interface.
5. Now click the “Network - LAN” and after that the “Settings” link on the left menu to
configure an IP in your local network and press "Save and Reload".
6. Now click the “Telephony” link on the left side of the page and "SIP". This will show the SIP
configuration page. Enter the IP or FQDN of the 3CX server in field "SIP Registration Server
Address" AND "SIP Domain" - even a SIP Domain can never be an IP you must enter the IP or
FQDN or your server. Otherwise 3CX does not handle the call going outside although the
extension looks active and logged in. Don't forget to save ...
7. Now click the “CODECS” link on the left side of the page. This will show the Audio/CODEC
configuration page. In there you only have to switch on "FAX without T.38 (Use G.711 fax)".
Because sometimes 3CX has problems with faxes on analog adapters and handles T.38 itself, it
is better to switch to G.711. Don't forget to save ...
8. Now click the “Phone 1” link on the left side of the page. This will show the User Information
configuration page. In here enter the phone Number, callerID name, user name, password and
port settings. Note that you have to add an extension in the 3CX Phonesystem. In this example,
extension 777 was added on the 3CX Phonesystem. 3CX resides on a machine with the IP
address of 10.172.0.2.
9. Reboot by plugging off and on the power supply of the adapter.
Note: it is recommended to do so immediately after changing the ip address.
Hints: if you don't see the adapter and the extension line activated and registered in the 3CX
server, you have to switch off and on the adapter. Only at plugging it in the adapter logs onto the
3CX server. We hope future firmwares will change that problem so the systems is reconnecting
in an interval if not successful the first time. Check the status on the first page after logging in.
10. Connect the Fax Machine to the LINE PORT in the Patton M-ATA adapter. You should hear
a dial tone as soon as you lift up the Fax Handset. Also the extension representing the M-ATA
i.e. 777 should show as registered on the 3CX Phone System Line Status.
11. Make some calls from a sip phone registered on 3CX to the M-ATA FAX extension and vice
versa from the Fax machine (which is now a “SIP PHONE”) to the extension to make sure that
you have both way audio and that functionality is as expected.
12. At this point you can proceed to test Fax sending functionality. Send a fax from the fax
machine to a destination of your choice. Remember to insert the outbound and maybe inbound
rule of the gateway you want to send the outbound fax from or receive faxes.
Congratulations - You are now able to send faxes using a traditional Fax Machine connected to a
Patton M-ATA.
Notes:
There are reported situations where DTMF will not work as expected when the caller is reaching
the PBX via a VOIP Provider. It may be necessary to tweak the MATA as follows;
Send DTMF Events: In-Band & OOB
RFC2883 payload value: 96
Regenerate OOB DTMF Tone: Enabled
RTP Port Min: 16384
RTP Port Max: 16482
