Thebestwaytodetermineexerciseintensityistomonitoryourpulserate.Yourheartratecaneasilybedeterminedbycountingthenumber
ofheartbeatsperminuteatthechest,wristorthecarotidarteryonyourneck.Itisdifficulthowevertocountyourownpulsewhileexercising
asitisnotpossibletocountfastenoughtoaccuratelytrackthenumberofbe
atsperminute.ThisDiamondbackFitnessunitisequippedwitha
setoftouchheartratesensors.

UsingtheTouchHeartRateSensors
Whiletheunitispoweredonandaworkoutprogramisoperating,gentlygraspbothtouchheartratesensorsonthehandlebar.Thecomputer
willdetectyourpulserateandregisterthevalueasatwoorthreedigitnumberinthePULSEwindow
ontheLCDdisplay.
NOTE: Ifaninconsistentheartrateisdisplayedwhileusingthehandpulsesensors:
Ensurethepalmsofbothhandsaretouchingthecontactareasofthetouchheartrate
sensors.
Maintainconstantandevenpressureonthegrips.
Donotclutchthetouchheartratesensorstightly.
Trytokeepbothhandsstillwhilegripingthetouchheartratesensor.
Makesurethecontactsareclean.
CalculatedMaximumHeartRate&TargetTrainingZone
Yourtargetheartratedependsprimarilyuponyourage.Itisimportanttoworkwithinasafeand
productivezone,foriftheexerciseintensityistoolowortoohigh,onlymodestgainswillbemadein
strengthandcardiovascularfitness.Aworkoutataverylowintensitywillnotoff
ermaximumbenefits.Conversely,iftheworkoutintensityis
toohigh,injuryorfatiguemayslowtheprogressionofyourexercisegoalsasthebodyattemptstorecover.
Note: Itismosteffectivetotrainataheartratebetween60%and85%ofyourmaximumheartrate.Maximumheartrate
iscalculatedasapercentageofyourmaximumheartrate(estimatedas220beatsperminuteminusyourage).
Tocalculateyourmaximumheartrateandfindtheappropriatetargettrainingzone,usethefollowingformulas.Forexample,thefollowing
estimationwouldberelevantfora35yearolduser:
22035=185BPM (220Age=CalculatedMaximumHeartRateinBeatsperminute/BPM)
0.60x185=111BPM (60%of185BPM[CalculatedMaximumHeartRate]=111BPM)
0.85x185=157BPM (85%of185BPM[CalculatedMaximumHeartRate]= 157BPM)
Basedonthesecalculations,therecommendedheartratetrainingzoneforthisuserwouldbebetween111BPMand157BPM.Thegraph
belowdisplaystherecommendedheartratetrainingzoneforuserstwentyyearsofagetoseventyfiveyearsofage.

WORKOUTQUALITYANDQUANTITY
Itisrecommendedthatyouaccumulateatleastthirty(30)minutesofphysicalactivitymostdaysoftheweek.TheAmericanCollegeofSports
Medicinemakesthefollowingrecommendationsforthequantityandqualityoftrainingfordevelopingandmaintainingcardiorespiratory
fitnessinhealthyadults:
Anactivitythatuseslargemusclegroups,maintainedcontinuously,andisrhythmicalandaerobicinnature.
Duration: 20to60minutesofcontinuousaerobicactivity,includingawarmupandcooldownperiodforeachsession.
Frequency: 3to5timesperweek.
Intensity: 60%to85%ofmaximumheartrate.
Inadditiontoaerobicexerc
ise,strengthtrainingofmoderateintensitytwiceperweekisrecommended.Womenespeciallymaybenefitfrom
weightbearingexercises.Selectactivitiesyouenjoyandcanfitintodailylife.HavingDiamondbackFitnessequipmentathomeoffersyouthe
opportunitytoworkoutwithoutgoingtothe gym.
GetaSmartStartonExercising
Anyoneovertheageof35,aswellasyoungerpersonswhomareoverweight,shouldcheckwithhis/herphysicianbeforecommencingan
exerciseprogram.Personswhohavediabetesorhighbloodpressure,afamilyhistoryofheartdisease,highcholesterolorhaveledsedentary
lifestylesshouldprotectthemsel
veswithamedicalcheckupandstresstestadministeredbyahealthcareprofessional.
Stretchingandmassagingmajormuscles(suchasyourquadriceps)followingaworkoutsessionwillaidinthedissipationoflactic
acidandspeedyourbody’srecovery.
Thefirstfewminutesofyourworkoutshouldbedevotedtowarmingupthemusclesbeforeavigorousworkout.Concentrateon
raisingyourheartrateslowly.
Afteranaerobicworkoutofroughly2030minutes,spend10minutesgraduallyreducingyourheartratebymovingslowerorwith
lessresistance.
NOTE: Startslow,withintensitylowuntilyoubuildupenduranceandstrength.Alwaysconsultyourphysicianbefore

Locatedinthe centeroftheupperdisplayaretheTotalTimeandSegmentTimeclocks.TheTotalTimefieldwill
countupthe totalelapsedtimeforthecurrentprogram,thenswitchtodisplaythetotaltimeremaining.The
displaywill switchbetweenthesetwovalueseveryfivesecondsunlessthisfeaturedisdisabledbytheuser.The

Whentheuser’sheartratesignalisdetectedviatheheartratesensorson
thefixedhandlebar,theheartandDBsymbolswillflashandtheuser’s
currentheartratewillbedisplayed.Iftheuser’sheartratesignalisnot
detected,NoSignalwilllightandtheheartratedisplaywillpost‐‐‐“.Whenoperatingaheartratecontrolprogram,Target
HeartRateAchievedwillbelitiftheuser’scurrentheartrateiswithinthedefinedrange.The“DB/Heart”logowillflashto

TheHeartRateBarGraphprovidestheuserwithmeaningfulheartratefeedbackinaneasytoreadformat.Whenaheartrate
signalisdetected,thebarsofthegraphwilllighttoindicateatwhichpercentageoftheuser’smaximumheartrateandtraining
zone(WarmUp,FatBurn,Cardio,orPeak)theuserisoperatingwithin.TheHeartRateBarGraphwillnotlightiftheuseris
operatinginguestmodeornoheartratessignalisdetected.IftheQuickStartprogramisrunning,thedefaultagevaluewillbe
usedtocalculatetheestimatedmaximumheartrate.
MatrixDisplay
Whentheconsoleoperatesintheprogramrunmode,thematrixwillgraphicallydisplaytheresistanceleveland
profilefortheselectedprogram.Ahigherstackrepresentsahigherresistancelevel,whileaflashingcolumn
indicatestheuser’sprogressintheprogramatanygiventime.Eachverticalcolumnrepresentsatimeinterval
determinedbythetotallengthoftheprogram.Eachcolumnwillequal1/20
th
ofthetotalprogramlength.For
example,iftheprogramlengthis30minutes,eachcolumnwillequal1½minutes.TheMatrixDisplaywillalso
providemessagingandfeedbackduringthesetupmodes.
Distance
DistancewillbedisplayedineitherMilesorKilometers,dependingupontheselectionmadeinthe consolesetupmode(see
sectiontitledEnglishUnitModeandMetricUnitModeonpage25).Thedistancecalculationisanestimationbaseduponthe
user’sRPM.
Calories
TheCaloriesfieldtrackstheestimatednumberofcaloriesburnedfromthebeginningoftheprogramandisaderivativeof
theWattsgenerated,theuser’sRPMandtheresistancelevel.
Speed
SpeedisdisplayedasMilesperHourorKilometersperHour(dependinguponthecurrentconsolesetting)andisbasedupon
therevolutionsperminutes(RPM).
