This operating manual provides important information on
the handling of the unit. It is an integral part of the product
and must be kept ready to hand in the immediate vicinity
of the unit. It must remain available throughout the entire
service life of the unit. It must be handed over to subsequent
owners or users of the unit.
Read the operating manual before starting any work on
or with the unit. Especially the chapter on safety. Follow all
instructions in full and unreservedly.
This operating manual may contain descriptions, which seem
incomprehensible or unclear. In the event of any questions
or if any details are unclear, contact the factory customer
service department or the manufacturer's local partner.
As this operating manual was written for several different
models of the unit, always comply with the parameters for
the respective model.
This operating manual is intended only for persons assigned
to work on or with the unit. Treat all its constituent parts
condentially. They are protected by copyright. They may
not be reproduced, transmitted, copied, stored in electronic
systems or translated into another language, either wholly
or in part, without the express written permission of the
manufacturer.

The unit may be operated only within its technical
parameters.

The manufacturer is not liable for damage or losses resulting
from any use of the unit which is not its intended use.
The manufacturer's liability also expires:
if work is carried out on the unit and its components
contrary to the instructions in this operating manual.
if work is improperly carried out on the unit and its
components.
if work is carried out on the unit which is not
described in this operating manual, and this work has
not been explicitly approved by the manufacturer in

if the unit or components in the unit have been

Safety
The unit is safe to operate when used for its intended
purpose. The construction and design of the unit conform
to current state-of-the-art standards, all relevant DIN/VDE
regulations and all relevant safety regulations.
Every person who carries out work on the unit must have
read and understood the operating manual before starting
any work. This also applies if the person concerned has
already worked with such a unit or a similar unit or has
been trained by the manufacturer.
Every person who carries out work on the unit must
comply with the applicable accident prevention and safety
regulations. This applies in particular to the wearing of
personal protective clothing.
DANGER!
Risk of fatal electric shock!
All electrical connection work must be
carried out by qualied electricians only.
Before opening the unit, disconnect the
system from the power supply - wait for 90
seconds = residual voltage at inverter - and
prevent it from being switched back on!
WARNING!
Only qualied personnel (trained heating,
refrigeration engineers and electricians)
may carry out work on the unit and its
components.
WARNING!
Unit contains refrigerant!
Leaking refrigerant could result in personal
injury and environmental damage. Therefore:
Switch off system.
Notify the manufacturer’s authorised
customer service.
ATTENTION
For safety reasons:
Never disconnect the unit from the power supply,
unless the unit is being opened.

ATTENTION
Install the heat pump only outdoors and operate
only with outside air as the heat source. Do not
restrict or block the air-conducting sides.

WARNING!
Never switch on the unit if air ow deectors
on the unit are removed.
ATTENTION
It is not permitted to integrate the heat pump
in ventilation systems. Use of the cooled air for
cooling purposes is not permitted.
ATTENTION
The ambient air at the place in which the heat
pump is installed, as well as the air drawn in as a
heat source, must not contain any corrosive con-
stituents!
Constituents (such as ammonia, sulphur, chlorine,
salt, sewage gases, ue gases…) can cause damage
to the heat pump, which can result in complete
failure / irreparable total damage to the heat pump!
Can be installed near the coast.
CAUTION!
In the air outlet area the air temperature is
approx. 5° K below the ambient temperature.
Under certain climatic conditions an ice
layer can therefore form in the air outlet
area. Install the heat pump so that the air
blower does not discharge into footpath
areas.

How heat pumps work
Heat pumps operate on the same principle as a refrigerator:
the same technology, only with reversed benets. The
refrigerator extracts heat from food, It discharges this heat
into the room through ns at its rear.
The heat pump extracts heat from our environment: from
the air, earth or water. The extracted heat is conditioned in
the unit and passed on to the heating water. Even when it is
extremely cold outside, the heat pump draws enough heat
to heat a house.

Area of use
Taking into consideration the ambient conditions, limits of
use and the relevant regulations, any heat pump can be used
in new or existing heating systems.

Heat metering
In addition to proof of the unit's efciency, the EEWaermeG
(German law promoting renewable energy for heating) also
requires heat metering (hereinafter referred to as WME).
Heat metering is mandatory for air/water heat pumps. Heat
metering for brine/water and water/water heat pumps only
has to be installed for a ow temperature ≥35 °C. The heat
metering must record the total thermal energy output
(heating and hot water) to the building. In heat pumps with
heat metering, the evaluation is carried out by the controller.
The controller displays the thermal energy output into the
heating system in kWh.
Operation
Your decision to purchase a heat pump or a heat pump
system is a long-term contribution to protecting the
environment through low emissions and reduced primary
energy use.
You use the control element of the heating and heat pump
controller to operate and control the heat pump system.
NOTE.
Make sure that the controller settings are correct.

To ensure that your heat pump or heat pump system oper-
ates efciently and ecologically, please pay particular atten-
tion to the following:
ENERGY SAVING TIP
Avoid unnecessarily high ow temperatures.
The lower the ow temperature on the heating
water side the more efcient the system.
ENERGY SAVING TIP
Preferably use purge ventilation. Compared to con-
tinuously open windows, it is better to air rooms
by fully opening windows for a short period, two
to three times a day (so-called “purge” ventilation);
this reduces energy consumption and your heating
bill.

Care of the unit
You can use a damp cloth and standard cleaning products to
clean the outer surfaces of the unit.
Do not use cleaning or care products that contain abrasives,
acids and/or chlorine. Such products would irreparably
damage the surfaces and could also cause technical damage
to the unit.
Maintenance of the unit
The cooling circuit of the heat pump requires no regular
maintenance.
According to EU regulation (EC) 517/2014, leak inspections
and maintenance of a log book are required by law for
certain heat pumps!

The components of the heating circuit and the heat source
(valves, expansion vessels, circulation pumps, lters, dirt
traps) should be checked and cleaned as necessary, but at
least annually, by qualied personnel (heating or cooling
system tters).
The intake and discharge openings must be checked for dirt
at regular intervals (depends on where the unit is installed)
and cleaned if necessary.
ATTENTION
Check regularly to ensure that the condensate can
drain out of the unit freely, without obstruction. To
this end, check the condensate pan in the unit and
the condensate drain regularly for dirt / blockages
and clean as necessary.
Icing of the protective grating
If temperatures fall below freezing and high levels of
humidity are present, ice can form on the protective grating
of the air deector hoods. In order to ensure fault-free
operation, the ice must be removed regularly!
It is best to sign a maintenance agreement with a heating
installation company. It will arrange for the necessary
maintenance work at regular intervals.
CLEANING AND FLUSHING UNIT COMPONENTS
CAUTION!
Unit components may be cleaned and
ushed only by customer service personnel
authorised by the manufacturer. Only use
liquids recommended by the manufacturer.
After ushing the condenser with chemical
cleaning agent, any residues must be neu-
tralised and the system ushed intensively
with water. Always note and follow the tech-
nical data of the respective heat exchanger
manufacturer.
Malfunctions
In the event of a fault, you can read out the cause of the
fault from the diagnostic program of the heating and heat
pump controller.

WARNING!
Only customer service personnel authorised
by the manufacturer may carry out service
and repair work on the components of the
unit.
Note that no fault is displayed if the safety temperature
limiter on the electric heating element has triggered
(depending on model).

FUNCTIONALLY NECESSARY ACCESSORIES
ATTENTION
Use only original accessories made by the manufac-
turer of the unit.
The heating and heat pump controller as a wall-mounted
controller is a functionally necessary accessory.
The heat pump is only a fully functional unit if the heating
and heat pump controller is installed.

Communication between the heat pump and controller
takes place via a cable to be laid on site by the customer
(I(Y) STY 2x2x0.6 mm²).
ADDITIONAL ACCESSORIES
The installation accessories (vibration isolators) for air/
water heat pumps for outdoor installation must be ordered
separately.

Installation and assembly

INSTALLATION LOCATION
ATTENTION
Install the unit outside buildings only.
Dimensioned drawing and installation plan for the
respective model.
TRANSPORT TO THE INSTALLATION LOCATION
To prevent damage during transport, transport the packed
unit to its nal installation location using a pallet truck,
forklift truck or crane.
WARNING!
Risk of tilting and overturning on lifting the
unit from the wooden pallet and during trans-
port! People can be injured and equipment
damaged; always work with several people.
Take suitable precautions to prevent the
risk of overturning.
ATTENTION
Never use components and hydraulic connections
on the unit for transport purposes.
ATTENTION
Do not tilt the unit by more than 45° maximum (in
any direction).

SOUND
The noise emission from the heat pumps must be taken in-
to account in the respective installation plans for air / wa-
ter heat pumps. The respective regional regulations must be
complied with.
NOTE.
The following sound pressure levels are calculated
values. Other constellations, adjoining other buil-
dings or even reecting surfaces may lead to a le-
vel increase. An exact specication of each sound
pressure level is possible only through a measure-
ment spot when the heat pump is already installed.

Undo the quick-release screws. Turn through 90° to
the left…
On both sides, pull the lower facing panel upwards and
outwards at an angle, lift out and put in a safe place...
LIFTING THE UNIT WITH TUBE HANDLES
REAR:
ATTENTION
Make sure that the tube handles do not damage
cable harnesses and components in the unit.
Lift the unit with the inserted tube handles, with at least
four people (one for each tube handle) and place on the
base. Make sure that the unit's baseframe is in full contact
with the surface of the ground.
Example: If the level difference between two unequal sound
sources is 5 dB, the level increase is an additional 1.2 dB.
INSTALLATION
Place the unit on a load-bearing, rm and horizontal
foundation. Make sure that the foundation is designed
for the weight of the heat pump. Materials that full this
requirement can be used for the foundation (concrete,
paving slabs, etc.). The surface in the air outlet area of the
heat pump must be permeable to water.
ATTENTION
In the air outlet area the air temperature is approx.
5 K below the ambient temperature. Under certain
climatic conditions an ice layer can therefore form
in the air outlet area.
Install the heat pump so that the air is not blown
out in the area of footpaths.
NOTE.
Always refer to and follow the installation plan for
the respective model. Note the size and minimum
clearances.

PREPARING FOR INSTALLATION
Remove lower facing panels on the switch box side and
the water connection side of the unit…

LIFTING THE UNIT WITH A CRANE
Remove the strips on the sides of the wooden pallet…
Pass the roundslings under the unit. Place lengths
of timber between the roundslings and the unit to
prevent pressure damage to the housing, or dismantle
the facing panels (for dismantling instructions, see
“Attaching the air deector hoods”)…

WARNING!
Roundslings should not be too close together
or too near the middle; otherwise the unit
may tilt or overturn!

ATTENTION
Pass roundslings past the fan on the side. Make sure
that the loaded roundslings do not press against
the fan.
Lift the unit with the crane and place it on the base.
Make sure that the unit's baseframe is in full contact
with the base.
ATTACHING THE AIR DEFLECTOR HOODS
WARNING!
Rotating parts on the unit.
For safety reasons, mount the two air
deector hoods on the unit before carrying
out any other work.
If you haven't done so already, remove the lower facing
panels from the switch box and water connection side
of the unit…
To do this, undo the two quick-release screws in the
lower facing panels…
Pull each of the facing panels upwards and outwards,
lift them out of the unit frame and put in a safe place…

Removing the upper facing panels from the unit…
To do this, undo the two screws at the bottom edges
of each of the upper facing panels…
Pull each of the facing panels downwards and outwards,
lift them out of the unit cover at the top and put in a
safe place…

The unit cover has been xed by the upper facing
panels. After removing the upper facing panels, the top
cover sits loosely on the top. Lift off the unit cover and
put it down in a safe place…
Installing the air deector hoods…
ATTENTION
Before starting the installation, remove the
protective lm from the air deector hoods.
Hook the air deector hoods onto the brass bushings
at the top of the unit frame…

Screw the air deector hoods onto the unit frame on
the switch box side (= operating side) and the water
connection side.

INSTALLATION / CONNECTION TO THE HEATING CIRCUIT
ATTENTION
Integrate the unit in the heating circuit as shown in
the hydraulic diagram for the respective unit model.
It is not possible to connect several heat pumps in
parallel.

Check to make sure that the cross-sections (diameters) and
lengths of the pipes for the heating circuit (including the
pipes laid in the ground between the heat pump and the
building!) are adequately dimensioned.
The hydraulic system must be equipped with a buffer tank,
the required volume of which depends on your unit model.
see “Buffer tank” page 16 .
ATTENTION
When installing the connections, always protect the
connections on the unit from twisting, in order to
prevent damage to the copper pipes inside the unit.
Flush the heating circuit thoroughly before connecting
the unit to the heating circuit…
Dirt and deposits in the heating circuit can cause malfunc-
tions.
Install shut-off devices for the heating water outlet
(ow) and heating water inlet (return) on the heat
pump side…
By installing the shut-off devices, the evaporator and
condenser of the heat pump can be ushed, if neces-
sary.
Connect the unit to the xed piping of the heating
circuit via vibration isolators. You must install them to
prevent the transfer of structurally borne sound to the
xed piping.
NOTE.
Vibration isolators are available as accessories.
Placing the unit cover back on the frame…
Hook the upper facing panels into the unit cover.
Screw the bottom onto the unit frame…
The air deector hoods are now installed. You can
carry out the assembly and installation work on the
unit, and when nished attach the bottom facing panels.
(See “Electrical connection work”).

Pressure safety
Equip the heating circuit with a safety valve and expansion
vessel in accordance with local standards and guidelines.
Also install lling and draining emptying devices, shut-off
devices and non-return valves in the heating circuit.
Circulation pump
The pump cable may not be lengthened. Therefore the
distance must be chosen so that the cable is long enough.
However, it is possible to shorten the cable.

Only 1 PWM signal is available for the circulation pump,
therefore the hot water must be supplied with a changeover
valve via the BUP outlet.
Normally open equals heating.

CONDENSATE DRAIN
The condensate precipitated from the air must be removed
frost-free via a condensate pipe with minimum 50 mm
diameter. If surfaces are water permeable, it is sufciency
for the condensate water pipe to be laid vertically in the
ground to a depth of at least 90 cm. If the condensate is
discharged into drains or sewers, ensure frost-free laying
with a gradient.
Discharge of the condensate into the sewers is permitted
only via a trap with funnel inlet, which must be accessible at
all times.

Buffer tank
The hydraulic integration of the heat pump requires a buffer
tank in the heating circuit. The required volume of the buffer

In mono-energetic air/water systems, integrate the buffer
tank in the heating water outlet (ow) upstream of the
overow valve.
Water heating
Water heating with the heat pump requires another heating
water circuit in addition (parallel) to the heating circuit.
When integrating, make sure that the hot water supply is
not fed through the buffer tank of the heating circuit.

Hot water tank
If the heat pump is to be used to heat water, you must
integrate special hot water tanks in the heat pump system.
Choose the storage volume so that the required quantity of
hot water is available even during a power cut.
The heat exchanger surface of the hot water tank must be
dimensioned so that the heating capacity of the heat pump
is transferred with minimum temperature drop. We offer a
variety of hot water tanks for you to choose from. They are
optimally matched to your heat pump.
Integrate the hot water tank in the heat pump system as
shown in the hydraulic diagram for your system.
Electrical connection work
The following applies to all work to be done:

ATTENTION
Ensure clockwise rotary eld of the load power
supply (compressor).
Operation with the incorrect rotary direction
of the compressor can cause serious, irreparable
damage to the compressor.
ATTENTION
The power supply for the heat pump must be
equipped with an all-pole miniature circuit-breaker
with at least 3 mm contact spacing to IEC 60947-2.
Residual current circuit breaker type A is sufcient.

The connection between the heat pump and the heating
and heat pump controller is made via a BUS cable.
NOTE.
When laying the cable inside the building, note that
unshielded power supply cables (voltage supply of
outdoor unit) and shielded cables (Mod-bus) must
be laid separately from each other.

the opening in the baseplate, through the cable duct
and into the switch area…

DAMAGE THAT CAN OCCUR IN CASE OF FAILURE TO
COMPLY WITH THE ABOVE
- Malfunctions and the failure of components (e.g. pumps,
valves)
- Internal and external leaks (e.g. from heat exchangers)
- Cross-section reduction and blockaging of components
(e.g. heat exchanger, pipes, pumps)
- Material fatigue
- Gas bubbles and gas cushion formation (cavitation)
- Negative effect on heat transfer (formation of coatings,
deposits) and associated noises (e.g. boiling noises, ow
noises)
LIMESCALE – THE ENERGY KILLER
Filling with untreated drinking water inevitably leads to
the precipitation of all calcium as scale. The consequence:
limescale deposits form on the heat transfer surfaces of
the heating. Efciency falls and energy costs rise. A rule of
thumb is that 1 millimetre of limescale deposit causes an
efciency loss of 10 %. In extreme cases it can even cause
damage to the heat exchangers.
WATER SOFTENING TO VDI 2035 – PART I
If the water is softened in accordance with the VDI 2035
guidelines before it is used to ll the heating system, no scale
can form. This prevents limescale deposits and the resulting
negative effects on the entire heating system, effectively and
permanently.
CORROSION – AN UNDERESTIMATED PROBLEM
VDI 2035, Part II, deals with the problem of corrosion.
Softening the heating water can prove to be insufcient.
The pH value can signicantly exceed the limit of 10. pH
values higher than 11 can set in, which even damage rubber
seals. VDI 2035, Part 1 guidelines are nevertheless fullled;
however, VDI 2035, Part 2 proposes a pH value between 8.2
and maximum 10.
If aluminium materials are used, which is the case in many
modern heating systems, a pH value of 8.5 must not be
exceeded! Because otherwise there is a threat of corrosion
– aluminium is attacked without the presence of oxygen.
Therefore, in addition to softening the heating ll and make-
up water, the heating water should also be conditioned
appropriately. This is the only way to comply with the
VDI 2035 requirements and the recommendations and
installation instructions of the heat pump manufacturer.
Part 2 of VDI 2035 also refers to the reduction in total salt
content (conductivity). The risk of corrosion is far lower if

VDI 2035
PART I AND II IN WATER HEATING SYSTEMS
Use of modern, energy-efcient heat pump systems is
becoming increasingly widespread. Their ingenious tech-
nology enables these systems to achieve very good
efciencies. The decreasing space available for heat
generators has led to the development of compact units
with increasingly smaller cross-sections and high heat
transfer capacities. This means the complexity of the
systems and the material diversity are also increasing, which
plays an important role especially with regard to their
corrosivity. The heating water not only affects the efciency
of the system, but also the life of the heat generator and the
heating components of a system.
The guide values of VDI 2035 Part I and Part II must
therefore be complied with as minimum requirements for
proper operation of the systems. Our practical experience
has shown that the safest, most reliable and fault-free
running is achieved with so-called low-salt operation.
VDI 2035 Part I provides important information and
recommendations regarding scaling and its prevention in
heating and domestic hot water heating systems.
VDI 2035 Part II primarily deals with the requirements
for reducing heating water corrosion in hot water heating
systems.
PRINCIPLES OF PART I AND PART II
The occurrence of scaling and corrosion damage in hot
water heating systems is low, if
- the planning, design and commissioning are carried out
properly
- the system is closed in corrosion terms
- adequately dimensioned pressure maintenance is inte-
grated
- the guide values for the heating water are complied with
- and regular servicing and maintenance are carried out.
A system log should be kept, in which the relevant planning
& design data is entered (VDI 2035).

Insulating the hydraulic
connections
Insulate the vibration isolators and the xed piping of
the heating circuit laid outdoors with vapour-diffusion
impermeable insulation.
Insulate according to the relevant local standards, guidelines
and directives.
ATTENTION
Lay the xed piping of the heating circuit outdoors
below the frost boundary.
Check that all hydraulic connections are leaktight.
Perform leak test…
Insulate all connection, connectors and pipes of the
heating circuit and the heat source.
deionised water is used than is the case if the system is
operated with salty, i.e. softened water.
Even drinking water softened beforehand contains dis-
solved, corrosive salts which, due to the use of different ma-
terials in the heating system, act as electrolytes and there-
fore accelerate corrosion processes. This can ultimately re-
sult in pitting.
ON THE SAFE SIDE WITH LOW-SALT OPERATION
The problems listed above do not occur at all with low-salt
operation, as the heating water contains neither corrosive
salts such as sulphates, chlorides and nitrates nor alkalising
sodium hydrogen carbonate. The corrosive properties of
deionised water are very low and in addition, scale cannot
form. This is the ideal approach for closed heating circuits, in
particular, because low oxygen input into the heating circuit
can also be tolerated.
In general, when the system is lled with deionised water,
the pH value sets itself within the ideal range due to “self-
alkalinisation”. If necessary, a pH value of 8.2 can be very
easily attained by adding chemicals. In this way, optimum
protection of the entire heating system is achieved.
MONITORING
Analytical recording and monitoring of the relevant water
values and the added conditioning substances is of decisive
importance. Therefore, they should be monitored regularly
using appropriate water test equipment.
