Backer Rod
How-To-Use
Materials:
• Safety glasses and gloves
• Bag of Sika Backer Rod
• Utility knife
Wire brush
• Blunt tool or roller
Procedure
1. Wearing protective gloves and safety goggles, clean joints with
wire brush, removing all dirt, grass, debris and old ller material.
2. Push backer rod into the joint and with knife, cut to desired length.
If necessary, use a blunt tool or roller to secure backer rod in the
joint. Joint width to depth should be 2 to 1 with a minimum depth
of 1/4” or a maximum depth of 1/2”. For best results, diameter of
the backer rod should be 1/8” larger than the width of the joint.
3. For joints larger than backer rod, twist two strands of the rod
together to ll the gap, then seal per the label recommendations.
4. If the backer rod should get punctured, wait a half hour before
applying the sealant.
