Backer Rod
How-To-Use
Materials:
• Safety glasses and gloves
• Bag of Sika Backer Rod
• Utility knife
• Wire brush
• Blunt tool or roller
Procedure
1. Wearing protective gloves and safety goggles, clean joints with
wire brush, removing all dirt, grass, debris and old ller material.
2. Push backer rod into the joint and with knife, cut to desired length.
If necessary, use a blunt tool or roller to secure backer rod in the
joint. Joint width to depth should be 2 to 1 with a minimum depth
of 1/4” or a maximum depth of 1/2”. For best results, diameter of
the backer rod should be 1/8” larger than the width of the joint.
3. For joints larger than backer rod, twist two strands of the rod
together to ll the gap, then seal per the label recommendations.
4. If the backer rod should get punctured, wait a half hour before
applying the sealant.
