KongsbergDiscoveryprovidesremotewatchstandercapability.TheSISRemoteapplication,
whichisanadd-ontoSeaoorInformationSystem(SIS),canworkwithnearlyanystrength
bandwidthconnection.TheSISRemoteapplicationrequiresaslittleas8kilobytesper
secondtoprovidemultibeamechosounderstatusinformationtotheremotecomputer.The
remotecomputercanbelocatedanywhereintheworld.Theinstallationandconguration
oftheSeaoorInformationSystem(SIS)applicationonthevesselisrequiredtorunthe
SISRemoteapplicationontheremotecomputer.

Thismethodofremotemonitoringiseasieranduseslessbandwidththanatraditionalremote
desktop.Remotedesktopworksverywellonhighbandwidth,whereasSISRemoteworks
wellonunstablenetworksandlowerbandwidth.Youcanmanuallyreducethedatatransfer
ratesbytransferringonlywhatyouwanttoseeontheremotecomputer.Remotedesktop
willonlyconnecttoonecomputer/systemononeplatformatatimewhiletheSISRemote
willdisplaymultipleEM®systemsonmultiplevesselsinonedisplay.SISRemotecanoffer
automaticdataextractionand/ordatacompression.
SISRemoteenablestheSIStobeoperatedbyremotewatchstanderswheretheuser-dened
portionsofthedatacollectedfromtheEMmultibeamechosounderscanbetransferredin
realtimetoaremotelocation.Thissolutionenablescommunicationandcontrolbetween
aanysurveyvessel,whethercrewedoruncrewed,andamothershiporshoresidecontrol
station,henceforthcollectivelyas‘remotecomputer’.Thesurveyvesselmusthavea
standardSISinstallationwithaSISRemotelicenseenabled.Remotecontrolfunctionality
mustbeenabledintheSISsoftwaresettings.
SISonthevesselrunsallthedatathroughadecimationlterbeforeitsendsauser-dened
subsetofthedatatotheremotecomputer.Thedataconsistsofstatusmessages,realtime
depths,pingdisplayinformationandthecompleteterrainmodellescollected.Fromthe
remotecomputeryoucaninreturnalterruntimesettingsandinstallationparameters.You
canalsostartandstoppingingandcontrolthedatalogging.Dependingontheavailable
bandwidth,youcanmonitorandcontroltheEM®multibeamechosounderssystemsinnear
realtime.SISRemoteusesanyformofradiolinkmarinebroadbandradio(MBR),mobile
networksorsatellite)totransferreal-timemultibeamdata.
ThesameSISinstallerleisusedonthevessel,attheremotecomputer,orintheKongsberg
BlueInsightcloud.

TheMQTTmessagebrokerapplicationtransfersthedatafromtheSISapplication
runningontheHWSonthevessel,totheremotecomputerrunningtheSISRemote
application.
TheMQTTmessagebrokermaybeinstalledonthevessel,inacloudapplication,or
ontheshoresideremotecomputer.
WerecommendthatyouusetheMQTTmessagebrokercreatedbyEclipse.

Communicationmethod
ThiscanbeviaaSeatexMarineBroadbandRadio(MBR),acellularnetworkor
satellitecommunication.
Remotecomputer

computerattheshorestation.

bere-transmittedwhenthecommunicationisre-established.

allvesselsatregularintervals.AMessageBrokerBridgeand/orrepeatercanbecongured
tostrengthentheconnectivitybetweenplatforms.
ThissetupmakesitpossibleforonesurveyortoeffectivelycontrolseveralEMsystemsfrom
onemothership,andtoreportprogressashoreinnearrealtime.

allowedintothenetworkwheretheHWS’sare.Thiscongurationishelpfulifyouhave
multiplesystems,multiplevessels,and/ormultiplesurveypersonnel.

Inthisconguration,theremotesurveypersonnelwoulduseanyavailablecomputereither
athomeorintheofcewiththedesignatednetworkcongurationandcredentialstoaccess
SISRemoteinstalledonaVirtualMachineinthecloud.Thisisausefulsetupwhenthere
arerotatingcontractedpersonnelandcredentials,hardwareandaccessneedtobecarefully
managed.
ShiptoShoreviaCloud
TheMQTTmessagebrokercanbeinstalledonavirtualmachine(VM)inthecloud(e.g.,
BlueInsight).Thenetworkbetweentheship(s)andthecloudwilltypicallybeadirect
satellitelink.Fromthecloud(e.g.,BlueInsight)tooneormoreremotelocations,land-based
highspeedInternetconnectionscanbeused.
ThissetupallowsmultiplesurveyvesselstosendtheirdatatoonecommonMQTTmessage
broker.Datacanbedisplayedsimultaneouslyatseverallocationsandeasilymonitoredby
multiplesurveyors.Thisisarecommendedsetupforover-the-horizonoperationswhere
staffmaybelocatedremotelyfromtheofcelocationandinparticularwhenthevesselor
vehicleisuncrewed.InsteadofusingaVMinthecloudforSISRemote,eachuserwould
conguretheirremotecomputer-eitherintheoperationscenterorhomeofce.

isforthesonarinputsandtherightlampisfortheconnectiontotheMQTTserver.Pay
attentiontothelampsinSIS,bothontheshipandonshore.Therightonemustbegreenboth
onboardandonshoretotransmitandreceivedatathroughtheMQTT-broker.Ifbothlamps
aregreen,youshouldseethevessel(s),sonar(s)andcurrentsurveyinthedropdownmenus.

2SearchforKMOceanInsightConnector.

4Waitaminute,andyoushouldseetheMQTTconnectorindicatorinSISgogreen.

2Settheintervalforhowoftentoupdateforeachitem,andclickenabletoactivate
thisdatatransfer.
3Enable/disablethedesireddatastreams.
4Usethesliderstochangetheintervalofthedatatransmissiontoaccommodatethe
availablebandwidth.
Acrosstrack(beams)-Numberofbeamsinthepingtotransfer.
Displaydata-Displaydataistheitemthatusesthemostbandwidth.Ifthereisno
needforCrosstrackandBeamIntensity,thisitemshouldbeoff.
