Accu-Chek Combo Insulin Pump
Insulin is delivered from a cartridge held inside the pump. The pump is
pre-programmed to deliver insulin continuously (basal insulin) to keep the blood glucose
constant. When any carbohydrates are eaten the carbohydrate amount needs to be entered
into the handset by the user/carer. The handset will then advise how much additional insulin
to be delivered (bolus insulin).
Navigating the pump and handset
The pump (figure 1
) is attached to a thin flexible tube the infusion set - which is inserted
into the skin of the abdomen or buttock via a fine needle called a cannula. The cannula is
held in place by an adhesive dressing. The pump itself can be operated independently or by
using the handset (
figure 2), which communicates with the pump via Bluetooth®.

How to use the Accu-Chek Combo pump to give insulin at school
The key worker (or young person) will need to give a bolus of insulin every day when:
The child/young person’s blood glucose is greater than 14 mmols/L
Whenever the child/young person has anything to eat or drink containing
carbohydrate
How to set temporary basal rates
The key worker (or young person) will need to set a temporary basal rate when:
The child/young person undertakes exercise
Alongside having snacks to maintain blood glucose levels during exercise, the amount of
basal insulin can also be decreased using temporary basal rates.
There pump is able to remain attached during exercise, however, it should be removed
during certain activities such as contact sports to protect the young person from injuries and
pump from damage.
Cancelling temporary basal rates
NB. If the young person is not eating, leave
the carbs with a value of 0g.
Suspending the pump
The pump can be stopped with the STOP function. This function stops all basal and bolus
insulin delivery
and should be used to stop delivery of an incorrect bolus while it is being
delivered, or if following hypo rules. When the pump is resumed, the basal insulin will
automatically restart. As long as the pump is in STOP mode, it will vibrate and emit two short
beeps every minute to remind you that no insulin is being delivered.
To suspend all insulin delivery
To resume all resume insulin delivery
Operating the key lock function on the pump
The pump has a key lock function to prevent buttons being pressed in error. If you press any
of the pump keys whilst it is locked, the keylock symbol appears on the screen.
Turning the keylock on/off via the handset
Extra information: Warnings and errors
The pump has an audible alarm that will sound continuously until dealt with. If an alarm
sounds, the pump screen will display a message, as will the handset via pump mode. This
can be silenced by pressing twice.
