SL 9000 J Series Console Installation Guide
1. Introduction
The SL 9000 J Series console is the biggest single step forward in analogue console
design for many years.
In the SL 9000, SSL has advanced the science still further, and confidently dubs the SL
9000 as the ‘ultimate analogue console’. Sound quality is combined with an advanced
digital control system, offering greater levels of automation and project management
than any previous system. It combines all of the best sonic artefacts that analogue
circuitry can provide with the creative control that computers have brought to the
recording and mixing process. Quite simply, years of design, manufacturing and
operational expertise has been focused on providing a new range of capabilities
which every recording and mixing engineer will welcome.
The design objectives of the SL 9000 are simply stated:
To provide the lowest noise and highest sonic integrity possible
To extend the range of operational facilities available to accommodate the
evolving needs of modern audio production
Provide comprehensive automation of major console functions
Incorporate and enhance the best features of the G Series and G Plus range
Provide the optional advantages of integral digital audio/video storage and
editing
The result of this undertaking is a completely new console, but with a control surface
that is quickly familiar to regular SSL users. An entirely new automation system
provides the processing power to bring new levels of digital control.
The object of this manual is to provide purchasers of SL 9000 J Series systems with
information in the following areas:

3. Installation
In this section you will find general instructions for the installation and connection of
the SL 9000 J console and rack. Information specific to other devices (e.g VisionTrack)
can be found in the appropriate Installation and Service manuals.
Because of the flexibility of the SL 9000 J system, which allows a great diversity of
configurations, the installation instructions are generalised by nature.
Before commencing the installation procedures, we recommend that you read
through this and the next section, paying particular attention to the
interconnection diagrams. SL 9000 J systems incorporate a large amount of
external cabling, and, if a logical rack layout is planned before installation
commences, this will lead to tidier cable runs, thus making any subsequent
fault finding or alterations a great deal easier to accomplish !
Environment
The SL 9000 J rack, together with all of the associated hardware (see diagram on Page
2), should all be located in a suitable machine room, with ambient temperature
between 10 - 24 Deg. C (50 - 75 Deg. F). Air flow through the SL 9000 J rack is from
front to rear; ensure that the ventilation grills at front and rear are not covered. Avoid:
• Dusty areas or areas subject to vibration
• Areas with strong magnetic or electric fields
• Installation near heat sources
Physical
The SL 9000 J processor dimensions are tabulated on Page 5. If mounting in a 19”
rack, the SL 9000 J processor and any other 19” rack mounting parts should be
located on supporting shelves. Ensure clear access to the rear of the rack (see page 7) - a
minimum clearance of 12” (305mm) is recommended. Dimensions for a typical 64-channel
console are shown opposite. Because of the wide variety of frame options available
(wings, mechanical extensions, producer’s table etc.) the actual footprint of your
console will undoubtedly differ.
NOTE: Do NOT attempt to remove the Filter Unit from the rack.
Additional hardware may need to be located in another 19” rack, adjacent to the SL
9000 J Power Supply Rack.
Video Sync Source
The SL 9000 J will not operate without a video sync reference input. This is used to
derive sample rate and video outputs, and is also necessary for machine control. The
unit expects to receive a Composite Sync signal input of 2 Volts ±6dB peak-to-peak,
terminated in 75 Ohm (NTSC, or PAL). A Black-and-Burst signal is not a suitable
substitute. Typical video connections are shown on Page 18.

Typical dimensions of an 80-channel console are shown above.
(Contact SSL Project Engineering for exact specification.)
Processor Rear Panel
The drawing below shows the main features of the SL 9000 J rear panel. The BITPAD
and REMOTE ports (for various serial communication), the CONSOLE port (for
terminal connection), and eight additional ports (1-4 for serial control, 5-8 unused)
are brought out to 9-way ‘D’-type connectors.
Video and sync connections are via BNC connectors, as is the NETWORK
connection.
On the right-hand side of the panel, above the IEC mains input connector, is an
additional BNC NETWORK connection for the six RJ45 PORT connectors, which
together comprise the ethernet repeater inreface. PORT 6 is used for the console-to-
processor network connection; the remaining five are available for the connection of
RJ45 10baseT network devices, such as RIOs or KeyPad.
The cable entries on the left hand side are for the Console/Processor MDR to MDR
cables. These plug in directly to the Fader Interface Cards, accessible from the front of
the Processor Crate.
The SCSI socket is for connection to an external Bernoulli drive for import of G-
Series automation data. When not being used, a SCSI Terminator must be fitted to this
socket.
The EXPANSION connector allows user defined functions to be remotely enabled.
For further details, see Pages 32, 33, and 50.
The 9-pin POWER SUPERVISOR
socket should be connected to the
appropriate socket on the Power
Supervisor Unit. This provides
computer ground potential sensing,
and must be connected. Refer to
Pages 14-17.
The 25-pin MACHINE CONTROL
socket is the connector for parallel
controlled machines. Further details
will be found on Pages 28-29.
The 25-pin TIME CODE socket is
the connector for LTC to and from
the system. Again, further details
will be found on Pages 28-29.
The four MIDI connectors, MIDI 1-
MIDI 4 provide outputs for MIDI
time code.
