For Your Safety Read Before Operating
Read the following safety precautions in their entirety before using this equipment. Failure to observe
these precautions will void the warranty. Keep these safety instructions where all those who use the
product will read them.
WARNINGS - READ
Read all instructions before operating the Harris e-Core
• The Harris e-Core is to be used only in a laboratory by trained professionals.
• The Harris e-Core is not a medical device, do not use to sample living tissue.
• Do not operate the Harris e-Core near sinks, running water, spills, or wet surfaces.
• Do not immerse the Harris e-Core in water.
• Unplug the Harris e-Core in the event of malfunction.
Observe the following precautions when handling the power supply
• Do not place the Harris e-Core plug or cord near or in water.
• Do not put strain on the cord. Ensure the Harris e-Core is operated with adequate extra cord
length. The use of grounded extension cords is acceptable.
• Keep dry. Failure to observe this precaution could result in re or electric shock.
• Do not handle the plug with wet hands. Failure to observe this precaution
could result in electric shock.
• Do not modify the plug in any way.
• Dust on or near metal parts of the plug should be removed with a dry cloth.
Continued use could result in re. Unplug the device before dusting.
• Unplug the power supply during thunderstorms. Do not handle the power cable or go near the
adapter during thunderstorms. Failure to observe this precaution could result in electric shock.
• Do not damage, modify, forcibly tug or bend the power cable. Do not place the power cable
under heavy objects, or expose it to heat or ame. Should the insulation be damaged and the
wires become exposed, contact your distributor. Failure to observe these precautions could
result in re or electric shock.
• Ensure that the optional plug sets are completely seated in the main plug base.
• Use only plug adapters designed for use with this product.
• Do not allow the cord to hang over the side of a bench or other working surface.
• Do not operate the Harris e-Core with a damaged cord or plug.
• Use care when changing plugs on power supply. Removing a plug from power supply may
require additional effort. To assist this removal it is suggested that you cover the prongs on the
plug to be removed with a cloth or use gloves when prying plug from power supply sleeve.

Do not operate the Harris e-Core with a damaged cord or plug or if the
Harris e-Core malfunctions, or is dropped or damaged in any manner.
Turn off immediately and contact the distributor for assistance.
• Should you notice smoke or an unusual smell coming from the Harris e-Core, unplug the power
supply immediately. Continued operation could result in injury. Contact the distributor.
Always unplug the Harris e-Core before replacing with dedicated Harris Micro-Punch Tips, when
it is not in use and before cleaning.
• Keep free hand away from coring zone.o
Unplug the unit to change coring tips (See Section 5.0). Make sure the tip
cover cap is on at all times when the Harris e-Core is not in use.
Do not disassemble the Harris e-Core.
• Touching the internal parts of the Harris e-Core or power supply could result in injury.
If repairs or servicing is required contact the distributor.
• Never keep the Harris e-Core with the Harris Micro-Punch Tip rotating in contact with the sub
strate for more than 3 seconds as it can cause permanent damage to the motor. If the motor
stops working, unplug the power supply and let the motor cool for a few hours before attempting
to use it again. If the motor continues to be inoperable then contact the distributor for assistance.
• To reduce the risk of injury, never activate the coring tip unless the Harris e-Core is to be used to
core a sample from a substrate.
Always use the Harris e-Core on a clean, at, dry Harris Cutting Mat.
• The use of Harris Micro-Punch Tips not designed for the respective model of Harris e-Core or
the use of attachments not recommended by the manufacturer may damage the Harris e-Core,
may cause injury to the user and will void the warranty.
• Be certain that the Harris Micro-Punch Tip is completely and rmly attached onto the Harris
e-Core drive shaft thread.
• Do not depress Harris e-Core ejection rod/plunger when preparing to core a sample. The Harris
e-Core is not a punch and the plunger is not a punching mechanism.

1.0 Introduction
The Harris e-Core is a compact, versatile, electric coring device designed for unrestricted sampling
of a wide range of DNA storage products or other sample substrates. The Harris e-Core was created
to bridge the gap between the lower cost, manual Harris Micro-Punch and Harris Uni-Core and the
automated bench top punching platforms. The ergonomic “joy stick” grip and the e-Core’s simple
operation provide comfort and efciency, integrating smoothly into all levels of laboratory sample
throughput. The user has complete management of the disc recovery process, the coring speed and
disc delivery.
The Harris e-Core, like the Harris Micro-Punch and Harris Uni-Core, continues to offer the same
unique combination of patented simultaneous sampling features: coring, retrieving and storing in
a single operation, but with dramatically increased processing times. The Harris e-Core ejection
system, like its predecessors, still offers the user the ability to control both the speed and delivery
of the ejected disc. Most importantly the Harris e-Core ejection system does not generate static,
affecting both accuracy and precision. The manually controlled ejection system and lack of static
generated ensures accurate disc delivery.
The Harris e-Core is a coring tool and not a punch. The Harris e-Core has been designed to utilize
dedicated replaceable Harris Micro-Punch Tips. The razor sharp cutting edge on the Harris Micro-
Punch Tip cleanly and precisely cores discs from substrates, all but eliminating the creation of
artefacts and potential cross contamination between sampling.
The Harris e-Core is currently available in three models identied by their respective industry standard
coring diameters: 1.2 mm, 2.0 mm and 3.0 mm. Each model has a xed diameter plunger ejection
rod ensuring efcient sample ejection. The Harris e-Core utilizes Harris Micro-Punch Tips which
conveniently thread to the Harris e-Core drive shaft. Each tip is made from 304 stainless steel with a
nitride coating and Rockwell Hardness of Rc60. The ejection rod is made from 304 stainless steel.

2.1 Harris e-Core Body
The Harris e-Core body has an ergonomic “joy-stick” conguration.
The body is moulded from a nylon/berglass composite offering a smooth, non-stick nish.
The Harris e-Core has:
1. A Finger rest for easy gripping,
2. A motor activation button (red) for coring,
3. A plunger ejection rod button (black) for disc recovery and placement into a
collection vessel such as a microfuge tube or multi-well plate,
4. A safety ange at its base for hand support and protection and
5. A threaded drive shaft by which the Harris Micro-Punch Tip attaches to the Harris e-Core.
Please note: The Harris e-Core plunger and tips are dedicated to their respective models
and are not interchangeable between different models.

2.2 Harris Micro-Punch Tips
The Harris Micro-Punch Tips are manufactured from
304 stainless steel bar, nitride coated and heat treated to
Rockwell Hardness 60 (Rc60). Each tip is hand sharpened
to a ne edge delivering approximately 1500 to 2000 sample
discs from FTA cards.
The optimum coring cycle (i.e. the length of time the tip
rotates in contact with an FTA card surface) for a new tip
ranges from 1 to 1.5 seconds. As the tip cutting edge dulls
with use the coring cycle will increase as the user attempts to extend the cutting life of the tip.
The coring cycle must be monitored. When the coring cycle noticeably increases above 3
seconds, the Harris Micro-Punch Tip must be replaced. If you continue to operate the Harris
e-Core at coring cycles above 3 seconds you will be putting strain on the motor thereby
shortening its rated operating life. Each Harris e-Core is sold with two extra Harris Micro-Punch
Tips to maximize throughput and functionality.
The tip cover cap is made from poly ethylene plastic. The cover cap must be placed on the cutting
tip when the Harris e-Core is not in use. This will protect the tip from incidental contact, which
could damage the cutting edge, and from user injury through contact with the cutting edge.
All Harris Micro-Punch Tips are sold with a protective cover cap. The cap must be placed on the old
tip prior to replacement and remain on the new tip when replacing tips on the Harris e-Core. The
Harris e-Core MUST NOT BE PLUGGED IN WHEN CHANGING TIPS. Harris Micro-Punch Tips
are not sold sterilized.
2.3 Optional Cord Wrist Strap
The optional cord wrist strap allows the operator
the option of restricting the movement (rotation)
of the DC jack in the pin at the top of the Harris
e-Core. The wrist strap positions the cord
extending from the DC jack along the operator’s
hand to their wrist and forearm, thereby keeping
excess cord from the work area. The power
cord is loosely strapped along the wrist and
forearm using the velcro wrist strap, providing
a less congested working area. The image on
the far right shows the cord tucked between the
palm of the hand and the Harris e-Core without
the use of the writst strap. There are many
ways to manage the cord during operation.
When using the wrist strap the operator must remember to unstrap the velcro band from the wrist to free the
excess cord when the e-Core is no longer in use. If this is not performed the operator may pull the unit and power
supply from the work surface, possibly damaging the unit and causing injury to themselves and others.

2.4 International Multi-Plug Set
The e-Core is provided with four international plug sets allowing worldwide use depending
on your geographic location. The plug sets are designated as follows NA - North America, EU -
Europe, Aust. - Austrailia and UK - United Kingdom. Select the plug for your geographic location
and insert as per instructions in Section 6.0. The plug may only be inserted in one direction to
the power supply. You will hear the plug snap into place which means it is rmly seated.
Although the plugs are interchangeable on the power supply, the process of unseating an
existing plug set can be difcult due to the design of the system which ensures the plug
is rmly seated in the power supply to ensure good contact and not to loosen with use.
Consequently it may be difcult to remove and exchange plugs but this is explained further in
Section 6.0. Therefore please take time to choose the correct plug for your geographic location.
2.5 Power Supply
The e-Core power supply is provided by FranMar with the
following specications: Input: AC 100-240V-0.7A 50-60Hz.

2.6 Harris Cutting Mat
The Harris Cutting Mat provides the best possible cutting
surface for the Harris e-Core Tips. The mat is made of
polyvinyl chloride, an inert, self-healing material. The mat
offers a second cutting service on its reverse side. The
cutting mat can be used several hundred times. In order to
prevent cross contamination the Harris Cutting Mat may be
cleaned as described in Section 4.0.
2.7 Harris e-Core Carrying Case
The moulded plastic case provides a safe protective storage place for the Harris e-Core when not
in use. The case holds all Harris e-Core components.

3.2 Harris e-Core and Sample Preparation
3.2.1 First time users insert the correct international plug set (NA,
UK, AUST or EU) into the power supply. See section 6.0.
3.2.2 Set up the work area. For use with an FTA card, place card
on top of Harris Cutting Mat.
3.2.3 With the e-core unplugged and the cover cap on the tip,
make sure the Harris Micro-Punch tip is nger tighton the drive
shaft of the e-Core by rmly holding the knurled surface of the drive
shaft in the ngers of one hand and tightening the tip in a clockwise
motion with the ngers of the other hand. The tip may loosen with
prolonged coring and may need periodic nger tightening.
3.2.4 Remove protective cover cap from Harris Micro-Punch Tip
by gripping the knurled surface of the drive shaft with one hand and
gently removing the cover cap off the tip with a rocking motion.
3.2.5 You may now plug in the Harris e-Core

3.3 Harris e-Core Operation
3.3.2 With the free hand hold FTA card down and in contact with
cutting mat. This is required as the card may spin when the Harris
e-Core cutting tip makes contact with the card. Also there is a
need to hold down the card when lifting the e-Core tip from the
cored card, stripping the card off the tip. KEEP FREE HAND AND
FINGERS AWAY FROM TARGET AREA.
3.3.3 The Harris e-Core is held above the FTA card in the vertical
position with the Harris Micro-Punch Tip perpendicular to the FTA
card target surface area.
3.3.4 Depress the red Activation Button (left side) with thumb to
begin the rotation process before making contact with the sample
surface. Lower tip until contact is made with the FTA card sample
surface. The tip is very sharp and minimal downward pressure
is needed to pass through the FTA card, making contact with the
Harris Cutting Mat below. Note: The Harris e-Core is a rotary tool.
The motor is activated by depressing the Activation Button (red
button) causing the razor sharp cutting tip to rotate. Rotation stops
immediately upon release of the Activation Button.
Depress the red Activation Button engaging the Harris e-Core
motor for 1 – 1.5 seconds to core the disc. Contact must be made
with the Harris Cutting Mat below the sample (card) to urge the disc
into the lumen of the Harris Micro-Punch Tip. The most efcient
and complete coring action is achieved only when the entire surface
edge of the Harris Micro-Punch Tip is in uniform contact with the
substrate surface. This will ensure that the downward pressure is
uniformly applied to the entire blade/sample surface interface.
3.3.1 Grip Harris e-Core unit in either hand. Use wrist strap to
optionally position excess cord along wrist (far left) or position cord
as shown in the illustration on the immediate left to keep cord out
of sampling zone.

NOTE: New users will require a brief period to acquaint themselves with the operating system and
the ease and speed with which a disc can be cored with the Harris e-Core. Coring with a new tip
should take 1 to 1.5 seconds to complete. In a very short period of time the user will become familiar
with recognizing when the coring edge on the tip has passed through the sample and made contact
with the underlying Harris Cutting Mat, urging the disc into the lumen of the Harris e-Core tip.
As the Harris Micro-Punch Tip makes contact with the sample and then Harris Cutting Mat below, the
speed of rotation may drop due to the resistance the Harris Cutting Mat places on the Harris Micro-
Punch Tip edge. Do not keep the Harris Micro-Punch Tip in contact with the Harris Cutting Mat
longer than the prescribed 1 – 1.5 seconds. Prolonged contact will put a strain on the motor and
dull the tip faster. If the user nds it necessary to keep the Harris e-Core tip in contact with the FTA
card longer than 1.5 seconds to cut a disc, than the tip is dull and must be replaced.
The optimum coring cycle (i.e. the length of time the tip rotates in contact with an FTA card) for a
new tip ranges from 1 to 1.5 seconds. As the tip cutting edge dulls with use the coring cycle will
increase. The coring cycle must be monitored. When the coring cycle noticeably increases
above 3 seconds, the Harris Micro-Punch Tip must be replaced. If you continue to operate the
Harris e-Core at coring cycles above 3 seconds you will be putting strain on the motor thereby
shortening its rated operating life. Each Harris e-Core is sold with extra Harris Micro-Punch Tips
to maximize throughput and functionality.
3.3.5 With the Activation Button still depressed lift the e-Core
vertically away from the sample surface while still holding the FTA
card rmly with the other hand on the cutting mat. This will allow the
Harris e-Core tip to be stripped away from the FTA card. Once clear
of the card surface remove thumb from Activation Button stopping
rotation. Once the disc has been cored it is simultaneously retrieved
into the Harris Micro-Punch Tip lumen where it may be temporarily
stored. The disc will not dislodge from the lumen until ready for
ejection. The lumen in the Harris Micro-Punch Tip functions as
temporary storage allowing the operator to rest the Harris e-Core,
if necessary, on its side on the bench to address disc delivery. The
disc will not fall out of the tip lumen.
3.3.6 Core and eject a single disc at one time. Do not core and
collect more than one disc in the tip lumen and then eject all cored
discs from lumen. Collecting two or more discs in the lumen before
ejecting may clog the lumen preventing ejection or may damage the
plunger ejection rod during the ejection operation.

3.3.7 Use only the Harris Micro-Punch Tip size corresponding to the Harris e-Core model listed
in the Table under Section 1.0. The use of other Harris Micro-Punch Tips on a non-corresponding
Harris e-Core model and plunger ejection rod diameter may result in damage to the plunger ejection
rod mechanism and/or incomplete sample ejection delivery. Therefore, for example, use only a
1.2mm Harris Micro-Punch Tip with the Harris e-Core 12. Do not use a 2.0 mm Harris Micro-Punch
Tip on the Harris e-Core 12 and vice versa. Each Harris e-Core unit is sold with a plunger ejection
rod with a specic outside diameter for use with a designated coring tip inside diameter. This ensures
complete sample ejection and delivery. Although the Harris e-Core threaded Drive Shaft will accept
other diameter Harris Micro-Punch Tips used in different Harris e-Core models, a smaller diameter
plunger ejection rod may not be capable of ejecting larger diameter discs cored with larger diameter
Harris Micro-Punch Tips.
3.4 Sample Ejection and Clean Up
3.4.1 Position the Harris Micro-Punch Tip over the desired collection
area or sample holder (i.e. microfuge, test tube, multiwell plate,
etc.). Using the thumb depress the black Ejection Button (right side)
at top. Make sure the disc drops into the receptacle and does not
adhere to the side of the receptacle. There is no static generated
from the Harris e-Core during the coring or the ejection process.
The low rpm and short coring cycle do not contribute static, but
there may still be ambient static due to dry conditions or climate.
Therefore, as a precaution, we suggest the user monitor disc delivery.
3.4.2 Follow the cleaning instructions for the Harris Micro-Punch Tip and Harris Cutting Mat in
Section 4.0 to clean instruments between sampling.
3.4.3 When nished coring unplug the e-Core, place the cover cap on the tip and return
the unit to storage case.
4.0 Cleaning
The Harris e-Core cuts rather than shears or tears samples from substrates. This coring/cutting
action eliminates the creation of artefacts and possible cross contamination between collected and
ejected discs. To further prevent cross-contamination between samples, you may clean the cutting
edge of the Harris Micro-Punch Tip between each coring operation. Dip the cutting edge into a 2%
solution of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and press the plunger up and down a few times. After
rinsing, wipe the tip and plunger with a clean paper towel. The Harris Cutting Mat may also be wiped
down with 2% sodium hypochlorite solution after each sampling.

5.0 Tip Replacement
5.1 With the Harris e-Core unplugged and with the protective cover cap in place over the Harris
Micro-Punch Tip, remove the tip from the e-Core by gripping the knurled surface on the e-Core drive
shaft to keep the shaft from rotating while unscrewing the tip.
5.2 Thread a new Harris Micro-Punch Tip, covered with a protective cap, onto the drive shaft of the
Harris e-Core. Make sure the tip is attached “nger tight” only. Keep protective cover cap over the
new tip until you are ready to use the Harris e-Core.
6.0 Plug Replacement
6.1 Changing a plug set on the power supply can be difcult. The plug/power supply system is
designed to rmly hold the plug set in the power supply sleeve to ensure a permanent connection
without loosening. To replace a plug set depress the release button (1) with the thumb of one hand
while simultaneously pushing against the posts of the plug set with the other hand (see left image).
It is recommended that you place some barrier such as paper towel or other soft material between
your hand and the posts (right image) as this will assist with unseating and pushing the plug set out
of the power supply sleeve while protecting your hand.

6.2 To insert a plug into the power supply slide the open end of the plug into the slot on the power
supply and continue to push until you hear it snap into place. This ensures the plug is rmly seated
with a good connection.
