Preparation

1. Thoroughlyinspectthe areawheretheequipmentisto be

used.Removeallstones,sticks,wire,and otherforeign

objectswhichcouldbetrippedoverandcausepersonal

injury.

2 Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesand closefitting

slacksandshirt. Loosefittingclothesor jewelrycan be

caughtin movableparts.Neveroperatethismachinein bare

feetor sandals.

3. Disengageclutchleversandshift(ifprovided)intoneutral

("N")beforestartingthe engine.

4. Neverleavethismachineunattendedwiththe engine

running.

5. Neverattemptto makeanyadjustmentswhileengineis

running,exceptwherespecificallyrecommendedinthe

operator'smanual.

6. Toavoid personalinjury orpropertydamageuseextreme

carein handlinggasoline.Gasolineis extremelyflammable

andthevaporsareexplosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycan

occurwhengasolineisspilledonyourselforyourclothes

whichcanignite.Washyourskinandchangeclothes

immediately.

7. Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer.

8. Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesandothersourcesof

ignition.

10.Neverremovegascapor addfuel whiletheengineishot or

Operation

1. Do notput handsor feetnear rotatingparts.Contactwith

the rotatingpartscanamputatehandsandfeet.

2. Donotoperatemachinewhileunderthe influenceofalcohol

or drugs.

3. Neveroperatethismachinewithoutgoodvisibilityor light.

Alwaysbesureof yourfootingand keepafirmhold onthe

handles.

4. Keepbystanders,helpers,pets,andchildrenat least75feet

fromthe machinewhileitis inoperation.Stopthe machineif

anyoneentersthe area.

5. Becarefulwhentillinginhardground.Thetines maycatch

in the groundand propelthe tillerforward.Ifthisoccurs,let

goof the handlebarsanddo notrestrainthe machine.

6. Exerciseextremecautionwhenoperatingonor crossing

gravelsurfaces.Stayalertforhiddenhazardsor traffic.

7. Neveroperatethe machineat hightransportspeedsonhard

or slipperysurfaces.

8. Exercisecautionto avoidslippingorfalling.

9. Lookdownandbehindand usecarewheninreverseor

pullingmachinetowardsyou.

10.Startthe engineaccordingtothe instructionsfoundin this

manualandkeepfeet wellawayfromthetinesat alltimes.

11.Afterstrikinga foreignobject,stoptheengine,disconnect

the sparkplugwireand groundagainstthe engine

Maintenance & Storage

Recoil Starter

Therecoilstarterislocatedontheengineandis usedto

manuallystarttheengine.

Before Starting

Gas And Oil Fill-Up

Servicetheenginewithgasolineandoil asinstructedin

theseparateenginemanualpackedwithyourtiller.Read

instructionscarefully.

Starting Engine

_ ARNING:Be surenoone isstandinginfront

of the tiller while the engineisrunningor

being started.

1. Attachsparkplugwireto sparkplug.Makesurethe

metalcapontheendofthesparkplugisfastened

securelyoverthemetaltipon thesparkplug.

2. Makesurethatthefineclutchcontrolisdisengaged.

3. Placethethrottlecontrol(ifequipped)intheFAST

position.

4. Forfirsttimestart-up,firmlypressengineprimerfive

(5)times.Forall futurestarts,pressthree(3) times.

Waitabouttwo secondsbetweeneachpress.

5. Placelefthandongastank.Grasprecoilstarterand

pullropeoutslowlyuntilenginereachesthebeginning

ofitscompressioncycle(ropewillpull slightlyharder

atthispoint).

6. Pullropewith a rapid,continuous,fullarmstroke.

Keepa firmgripon handle.Letroperewindslowly.Do

notletrecoilstartersnapbackagainstengine.Repeat

untilenginestarts.

Stopping Engine

1. Movethrottlecontrollever(ifequipped)toSTOPor

OFFposition.Refertotheenginemanualforinstruc-

tionson stoppingtheengine.

2. Disconnectsparkplugwirefromsparkplugand

groundagainsttheengine.

Using Your Tiller

Yourtillerisdesignedforseedbedpreparation,cultivat-

ing,furrowing,andmulching.

Wheel Position

Thetillerisshippedwiththewheelsadjustedsothat

theunitsitslevel.Beforetilling,thefrontwheelmustbe

raised.Todothis,pu,thewheelbracketassemblydown

towardsthegroundand lift up,Figure4-2.Thewheelwill

Handle Pressure

Furthercontroloftillingdepthandtravelspeedcanbe

obtainedbyvariationofpressureonthehandles.

A downwardpressureon thehandleswillreducethe

workingdepthandincreasetheforwardspeed.An

upwardpressureon thehandleswillincreasethe

workingdepthandreducetheforwardspeed.

Thetypeof soilandworkingconditionswilldetermine

theactualsettingofthedepthstakeandthehandle

pressurerequired.

Thetillerhasmanyusesotherthantillingandcultivating

a garden.Oneoftheseisthepreparationoflawnareafor

seeding.Thetillerwillpreparea deepseedbedwhichwill

befreeofharduntilledspots,allowinga betterstandof

grasstogrow.Thetillerisveryusefulforlooseninghard

soilforexcavationwitha shovel;1/otedioushandworkwill

benecessary.Yourtillermaybeusedformixingcompost

inthepile orformixingit withthesoilinyourgarden.This

shouldbedoneafterthe soilhasbeenbrokentothefull

workingdepth.Thecompostshouldbeworkedin toa

depthofsixto seveninches.Thismaybedonebywork-

ingthelengthofthegardenandthenbymakingseparate

passesacrossitswidth.Theadditionof decayedorganic

matterwillsubstantiallyincreasethefertilityofyour

garden.Forproperdecayingaction,fertilizershouldbe

appliedandworkedinwiththemulchmaterials.Breaking

upleavesandstrawandmixingit withseveralinchesof

soilallowsproperaerationoftheplantrootsystemand

retardsthegrowthofweeds.

Making Adjustments

Warning: Disconnectthe spark

plugwire and ground itagainst

the engine before performing

any adjustments.

Engine Adjustment

Referto theenginemanual for engine adjust-

mentinstructions.

Tine Width Adjustment

The tilling width ofthe unit is22 inches.Tilling

width can increaseto 24 inches by removing

the clevis and cotter pins,sliding each outer

tine out one inch,and securing in this position

with the pins. Forcultivation,reduce thetine

width to 13inches byremovingthe outer tines

completely,Figure5-1.

• Cleantheengineregularlywitha clothor brush.

Keepthecoolingsystem(blowerhousingarea)clean

to permitproperaircirculationwhichisessentialto

engineperformanceand life.Becertainto removeall

dirtandcombustibledebrisfrommufflerarea.

leastoncea season.
