DMX Linking
DMX linking is daisy chaining more than one MotionOrbâ„¢, through the DMX In and Out ports.
The MotionOrbâ„¢ has two modes that require DMX linking:
• Master/Slave mode, in which the master MotionOrb™ sends DMX signals to the
MotionOrbâ„¢ slaves
• DMX mode, in which the DMX controller sends DMX signals to the MotionOrb™
To DMX link MotionOrbâ„¢ products do the following:
1. Connect the male end of the DMX cable to the DMX Out port of the master MotionOrbâ„¢, or
the DMX controller.
2. Connect the female end of the DMX cable to the DMX In port of the next MotionOrbâ„¢.
3. Connect the male end of another DMX cable to the DMX Out port of the MotionOrbâ„¢ in
step 2.
4. Connect the female end of the DMX cable into the next MotionOrbâ„¢.
5. Continue connecting each other MotionOrbâ„¢ until they are all part of the chain.
• When DMX linking MotionOrb™ products for Master/Slave mode, the master is the
first MotionOrbâ„¢ in the chain and there is no DMX controller. See
Master/Slave
Configuration for details.
• When DMX linking MotionOrb™ products for DMX mode, the DMX controller is the
first thing in the line.
• Never connect more than 32 MotionOrb™ products together on a single DMX chain.

The master and slaves are daisy chained though the DMX In and Out ports with the master
at
the beginning of the chain. For more information see DMX Linking above.
The MotionOrbâ„¢ products have three different Master/Slave modes in which they operate
singly, or in groups of 2, or in groups of 3.
• When configured singly there is one master and any number of slaves duplicating the
master.
• When configured in groups of 2 there is 1 master plus 1 slave for a group of 2. Then there
are any number of groups of slaves, with the 1st in the group duplicating the master and the
2nd in the group duplicating the slave.
• When configured in groups of 3 there is 1 master plus 2 slaves for a group of 3. Then there
are any number of groups of slaves, with the 1st in the group duplicating the master, the 2nd
in the group duplicating the 1st slave, and the 3rd in the group duplicating the 2nd slave.

DMX
Configuration
DMX configuration prepares the MotionOrbâ„¢ for use with a DMX controller. DMX configuration
involves doing the following:
• Activating DMX mode
• Selecting the DMX personality
• Selecting DMX address
• Setting the MS address
The MotionOrbâ„¢ has different DMX personalities for varying levels of control with
a DMX
lighting controller. The following sections describe how to configure the MotionOrbâ„¢
for use
with a DMX controller.

DMX Mode and
Personality
The MotionOrbâ„¢ has 4 DMX personalities as described below: The simplest one has 9
channels and does not have pixel mapping. The other 3 personalities are for pixel mapping.
There is a 165-channel, a 240-channel, and a 315-channel pixel mapping personality. Each one
is designed for a specific length of MotionOrbâ„¢.
The basic MotionOrbâ„¢ is 2 meters long and has 165 orbs, so it uses the 165-
channel DMX
personality.
To activate DMX mode and select the DMX personality, do the following:
1. Press <MENU> until Dmx shows in the display.
2. Press <ENTER> until DMX Mode shows on the top line of the display.
3. Use <UP> or <DOWN> until the desired DMX mode shows on the bottom line of the display.
