3. Introduction
The Farm Hand Heat Zone Controller is a four stage environmental controller intended for temperature
control of poultry houses equipped with heaters that will operate from either 24 VAC or 120 VAC
ignition. The examples used in this manual show HSI and Zone brooders, although the Heat Zone
controller is not limited to these models.
A typical installation of the Farm Hand Heat Zone controller that can control up to four brooder heat
zones is illustrated below. This example shows half house brooding with eight brooders in each of the
four Heat Zones. Temperature sensors are placed in the center area of each zone. As noted below
Sensor 1 should be placed in the center of Zone 1, Sensor 2 in the center of Zone 2, etc. The Farm
Hand Heat Zone controller monitors the temperature of each zone and controls the ignition of the
brooders to maintain each zone temperature within the limits as established by the user. The Zone
controller can be used in conjunction with the Vent Master 24 or be connected to the Cumberland
Farm Manager network.
There are two models of the Farm Hand Heat Zone controller. Model # 6607-1596 (120 VAC) works
with Hot Surface Ignition (HSI) types of brooders and provides 120 volts for ignition. The 120 volts

4. Day to Day Operating Instructions
This section of the manual describes the day to day operation of the Farm Hand Heat Zone controller.
4.1 Face Pad Description The Heat Zone Controller has three regions on
the face pad. First is the main display area.
This section includes the main display, and
three green LED’s which tell what the display is
indicating. If the green light beside “Room
Temperature” is lit, then the display is showing
the average inside temperature of the heated
area of your building. Later in this manual you
will learn how to view the other two parameters.
Just to the right of the main display is the control button region. This region has three buttons, Mode,
Plus (+), and Minus (-). The Mode button is the primary user operated button on the controller. It has
two functions: First, when you press the button you will step through Room Temperature, Target
Temperature and Zone Temperatures. (All of these are shown on the display.). Second, the mode
button allows you to go into program mode. To do this, press and hold the mode button for five
seconds, until you see “P1” in the display. This P1 will alternate with the actual setting of Parameter
P1. (See Section 5 “Program Mode” for more information.)
The Plus and Minus buttons are used to adjust settings (Target Temperature, for
example). If you press the Plus (+) button, the setting will increase, and when
you press the Minus (-) button, the setting will decrease.
Below the main display are four zone status indicators. This red light will be lit if
the stage is on.
Finally, the Farm Hand Heat Zone Controller has
a three position switch for each one of the four
zones. The Zone Control Switches will control the heaters based upon the
settings as follows:
ON In this position the brooder runs continuously. The brooder can
not be turned off by the Heat Zone Controller.
OFF In the “OFF” position the Heat stage will not run. The brooder
can not be turned on by the Heat Zone Controller.
AUTO The stage is under control of the Farm Hand Heat Zone
Controller.
4.2 Checking/Adjusting Temperatures
To view the average temperature of the heated area of your house, look at the display. When a control
button has not been pressed with in the last minute, the display will automatically show “Room
Temperature”. To see the Target Temperature, press the button labeled “Mode”. When this button is
pressed, watch the green LED’s beside the main display. Whichever LED is lighted determines the
parameter you are viewing. You can easily see “Room Temperature”, “Target Temperature and all
four Zone Temperatures. These three temperatures are defined as:
Room Temperature = The average of the four zone sensors located inside the house.
Target Temperature = The temperature the system tries to maintain.

To adjust the Target Temperature, press the mode button until the LED beside Target Temp is lighted,
then use the Plus (+) button to raise the value, or the Minus (-) button to lower the value. When you
are finished setting a new value, either press the mode button again, or wait a few seconds and the
system will return to normal operation.
To view the zone temperatures press the mode button until the LED beside Zone Temps is lighted. Note
also the Zone 1 LED will light indicating the Zone 1 temperature is being shown in the display indicator.
Continue to press the Mode button to step through all four of the Zone temperature readings.
The chart below shows the sequence of parameters will be shown in the display as the mode button is
pressed.
4.3 Using the Heat Zone controller over local or HH.Net connections
The Farm Hand Heat Zone controller has the capability to operate with other network
compatible controllers over the HH.Net or over a local network connection. Two examples
are shown in the Wiring diagrams. The Heat Zone can be connected to the Vent Master over
a local network connection. (See Section 8.3 for a wiring diagram.) The Vent Master can
then control the Target Temperature. Programming parameter P40 of the Heat Zone
controller is the Network Address. This must be set to zero (0) when operating with the Vent
Master.
The Heat Zone can also be connected directly a personal computer running the Farm Manager
software. See Section 8.1 for a wiring diagram. In this case the Network Address of the Heat
Zone must be between eight (8) and 32 and be unique as required. For additional information
on the HH.Net and Farm Manager see Cumberland document Number 4801-5049.
When connected to a local network or to the HH.Net, there are two LEDs on the Heat Zone
circuit board that indicate the status of communications. The Receive LED is lighted red
when receiving data over the network connection. (Note: This LED may appear to be on

5. Program Mode
Settings that are usually set up once per growout, or maybe even just for summer or winter are referred
to as program parameters and are accessed by taking the controller to program mode. Some examples
of these settings are Zone On points and Off points and Sensor Calibration. To get to program mode,
press and hold the “Mode” button for five seconds. When the controller has entered program mode,
the main display will flash between “P1” and the value of this parameter.
The “P1” is known as a parameter number. All the program items for the controller have a parameter
number assigned to them. The numbers are listed in the section called “Program Reference” in the
back of this manual with a short description of each parameter.
When in the program mode, the current parameter is changed by using the Plus (+) and Minus (-)
buttons as needed. When you have finished with the current setting, press the “Mode” button to move
to the next parameter. Look at the zone status indicators. If the light for zone 1 is lit, the parameter
being programmed is for zone 1. To go to zone 2, continue to press the mode button until the zone 2
indicator LED is lit.
5.1 Zone Parameters
The following parameters are used to program each zone on the Farm Hand Heat Zone
Controller. Through these parameters, the user has complete control over the operation of
each stage. The following section explains each parameter.
P1 = Metric or English Units
P4 = Zone On Point
P5 = Zone Off Point
5.1.1 Temperature Units (P1)
The zone parameter (P1) sets the type of temperature units displayed in the indicator.
P1 options are as follows:
ON = Metric
Temperature is displayed in degrees Celsius.
OFF = English
Temperature is displayed in degrees Fahrenheit.
5.1.2 Stage On Points (P4)
The On Point setting is the temperature at which a stage turns on. (i.e. the
temperature at which an ignition signal is transmitted by the controller. The On
Point settings for the Heat Zone controller will always be less than the target
temperature.
5.1.3 Stage Off Points (P5)
The Off Point setting is the temperature at which a the ignition to a brooder turns off.
5.2 PC Compatible Network Parameters
This option requires Cumberland’s Farm Manager Software. The controller has three
functions which are used to set it up on the Cumberland PC compatible inter-controller
network (HH.Net). These are:
P40 - HH.Net Address
HH.Net allows you to connect up to 32 controllers on a single communications port of your
personal computer (PC). In order for the computer to recognize the communications from the
Part No. 4801-5129 rev 1-20 Farm Hand Heat Zone Page 8 of 25
controllers, each controller must have a unique address. There are two restrictions on the
address of the Heat Zone controller depending on how it is connected in the HH.Net. If the
Heat Zone is connected to the Vent Master, the address of the Heat Zone must be set to zero.
When connected directly in the HH.Net the address must be between eight (8) and 32 and be
unique as required. For example, If you have two Heat Zone Controllers, and two Power
Vents you would need to set the first Heat Zone Controller to address 8, the second Heat
Zone Controller to address 9, the first Power Vent to address 1, and the second Power Vent to
address 2. (You do not have to address the controllers in any particular physical order.)
P41 - Version Number
This is not settable. It is the version of the controller software.
P42 - Controller Type
This is not settable. It is a unique number that allows the network software (Farm Manager)
to know the type of controller.
5.3 Sensor Calibration
The Heat Zone Brooder Controller has 4 sensors that may be calibrated. The parameter(s) for
calibration are PSX with X being the sensor number. The sensor temperature reading is
alternately displayed along with the parameter number. You should never attempt to calibrate
a sensor more than 8 degrees. If a temperature reading that is that far out of range, it
indicates that there is a problem that should be corrected.
PS1 - Calibrate Sensor 1
This reading can be changed by pressing the + or - button until the desired
reading is displayed.
PS2 - Calibrate Sensor 2
This reading can be changed by pressing the + or - button until the desired
reading is displayed.
PS3 - Calibrate Sensor 3
This reading can be changed by pressing the + or - button until the desired
reading is displayed.

location, free from any temperature influences (direct sunlight, water, etc.) Use care
when securing sensor wires so that you do not cut the wire. Any short, or break in
the wire will cause improper sensor operation.
6. Connect each sensor to its appropriate terminals inside the enclosure. (See the wiring
diagram in Section 8.6 of this manual.)
7. Connect wires from stage terminals to the brooders. See Section 8.4 for wiring to an
HSI brooder or Section 8.5 for wiring to a Zone brooder.
8. Connect the wires for either 120Vor 240V power to the terminals specified in the
wiring diagram in Section 8.7.
7. Maintenance
7.1 Sensor Calibration
Check the calibration of your sensors at least once per quarter. You will need to have two people.
One at the sensor with a trusted thermometer, and one at the controller to set the sensor to the proper
setting.
7.2 Removing and Replacing a Relay Strip
The Heat Zone Controller is equipped with removable relay strips for easy maintenance and

N.O.RELAY STRIP
WHAT ARE FAIL-SAFE RELAY STRIPS ?
There are two types of Relay Strips. The Normally Open (N.O.) strip
requires a signal from the controller board in order to energize a stage
of ventilation. Should power be removed from the controller, the
Normally Open Relay board would not be able to energize a ventilator.
On the other hand, the Fail-Safe relay strip would close each of the
relays in the strip resulting in energizing the ventilators in case of a
controller power failure.
NOTE: Fail-Safe relay strips are NOT recommended for
heating (brooder) applications!

Note: If a sensor is in error the display will show "- - -" and the actual temperature
loaded into the sensors register will be 130 F. This insures that the heat stage will
not be allowed to operate until the sensor is corrected.
9.1.2 Possible Solutions
Sensor Error
If any of the sensors are bad try the following:
Reset the controller by taking power away at the breaker, or unplugging it.
Determine which sensor is bad, then check the connection inside the controller door.
Determine which sensor is bad, then check the sensor that is hanging in the house to
make sure that it has not been damaged.
Check the wire going to the sensor(s) to be sure there are no staples through the
wires.
Replace the bad sensor.
9.1.3 Local Network Errors
If the display flashes “LnE” it indicates that there is a Local Network Error. If you
are attached to the Vent Master 24 via the Local Network connection there is a
communications problem. Report this problem to your local dealer.
If you are using the Heat Zone as a stand-alone controller with no Local Network
Connection, you can disable this error code by setting P40 to an address between 8
and 32.
