BEFORE WELDING
Ensure that the helmet is correctly assembled and that it completely blocks any acci-
dental light. In the front, light may enter the helmet only through the viewing area of the
electro-optical welding filter.
Ensure that solar cells and photo-sensors are not covered by any object or dirt, as this
could prevent the proper operation of the filter.
Adjust the headgear to ensure maximum comfort and to provide the largest field of vision.
Check the prescribed shade level for your welding application and adjust your electro-
optical filter accordingly (see the table with recommended shade levels).
Replace potentional malfunctioned (check that the electro-optical welding filter turns dark
if you strike the welding arc) or physically damaged electro-optical welding filter.
If these conditions are not fulfilled, the product is not suitable for use.
PRECAUTIONS
Never place the helmet or the electro-optical welding filter on hot surfaces.
Scratched or damaged protection screens should be regularly replaced by original ESAB
ones. Before using the new protection screen, make sure to remove any additional pro-
tective foil from both sides.
Only use NEW-TECH
TM
6-13 XL ADC plus in the temperature range between -10°C and
+60°C (+14°F to +140°F).
Do not expose the electro-optical welding filter to liquids and protect it from dirt.
Failure to follow these instructions will invalidate the guarantee. ESAB does not accept
liability for any problems which may arise from applications other than welding, or if the
instructions for use are not strictly followed. The NEW-TECH
TM
6-13 XL ADC plus weld-
ing helmet is manufactured to protect the welders eyes and face against spatters and
hazardous ultraviolet and infrared rays emitted during the welding process. For other
applications use other suitable personal protective equipment.
Use only original ESAB spare parts. In case of doubt, please call your ESAB authorized
dealer.
Materials which may come into contact with the wearers skin could cause allergic reac-
tions to susceptible individuals.
Welding helmet worn over standard ophthalmic spectacles may transmit impact, thus cre-
ate a hazard to the wearer.
If the helmet and the protection screen both do not carry the B marking, then only the S
marking is valid.
For your protection and maximum efficiency, please read this information carefully
before use.
STORAGE
When not in use the filter should be stored in a dry place within the temperature range
of -20°C to +65°C (-4°F to +149°F). Prolonged exposure to temperatures above 40°C
(104°F) may decrease the battery lifetime. It is recommended that the solar cell of the
filter is kept in the dark or not exposed to light during storage in order to keep the filter
on power down mode. This can be achieved by simply placing the filter face down on the
storage shelf.
MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING
It is always necessary to keep the solar cell and the light sensors of the filter free of dust
and spatters: cleaning can be done with a soft tissue or a cloth soaked in mild detergent
(or alcohol). Never use aggressive solvents such as acetone. ESAB filters should always
be protected from both sides by protective screens (polycarbonate or CR39), which
should also be only cleaned with a soft tissue or cloth. If protective screens are in any
way damaged, they must immediately be replaced.

HELMET AND MOUNTING SYSTEM ASSEMBLY
Fix the metal spring into the slots of the supporting frame as shown in figure 2, but on one
side only.
Insert the metal spring hook on the side already attached to the frame, into the provided
hole in the inner upper corner of the helmet filter opening, as shown in figure 3.
Insert the other metal spring hook into the second hole and attach the free end of the
metal spring into the slots on the other side of the supporting frame.

The NEW-TECH
TM
6-13 XL ADC plus welding helmet is designed to be as user-friendly as possible, so there
is no need to disassemble the mounting system when replacing the protective screens or welding filter.
We strongly discourage the disassembly of the mounting system for any none specific reason, the above
described procedure requires some advanced skills.
The headgear is equipped with a replaceable sweatband. Sweatbands are available through your local dealer.
WELDING HELMET
HELMET AND HEADGEAR ASSEMBLY
Insert screws (A) through the openings in the headgear (D).
Insert the headgear (D) into the helmet shell (F) as shown in figure 1 and push the
screws (A) through the rectangular opening in the helmet shell.
Put the tilt adjustment (B) on the right side between the screw (A) and helmet shell (F).
Make sure that a small pin is fixed in one of the three holes in the helmet shell. Choose
the right hole for your maximum comfort.
Tighten the nuts (C) on screws (A). Before adequately tightening them, place the head-
gear at the most comfortable distance from the filter opening by using the two rectangular
holes in the helmet shell.
The headgear (D) can be adjusted by turning the rear wheel (E) in order to fit any head
size. Press the wheel and hold it before and while turning it, and release it when reaching
the position of maximum comfort, so the wheel will lock the required position.

WELDING FILTER AND PROTECTION SCREENS ASSEMBLY
Release the metal locking spring (1.).
Place the inner protective screen on the inner
side of the electro-optical welding filter as
shown in figure (2.a). Insert the electro-opti-
cal welding filter with the inner protective
screen between the supporting frame and the
metal spring until the electro-optical welding
filter is secured in the supporting frame by
the metal spring (2.b). The connecting cable
should be bent to the right side while insert-
ing the electro-optical filter into the supporting
frame, in order to avoid placing the cable
under the metal spring.
Lift the supporting frame with the welding
filter and put the outer protective screen in
place (3.).
Lower the supporting frame with welding
filter (4.a) and lock the metal locking spring in
position (4.b).
Carefully push the outer part of the exter-
nal controls housing with electronic board
through the side opening of the helmet (5.a).
Place it to the correct position by first insert-
ing the part with the batteries up on the inner
side of the helmet (5.b). The batteries stay
slightly slanted against the helmet.
The inner part of the external controls hous-
ing should be placed to its position from
direction as indicated with an arrow in step 6.
The arrow shows the opening through which
the batteries should go, before the inner part
of the external controls housing is placed
onto the correct position. (6.) Gently push the
outer part of the external controls housing so
it perfectly sits in the position.
Screw in the three screws (7.).
Insert the two batteries and slide the battery
cover over the batteries (8.).

PROTECTIVE SCREEN REPLACEMENT
Release the metal locking spring (1.).
Remove the inner protective screen and
replace it with a new one (2.).
Lift the supporting frame with welding filter
(3.a), remove the protective screen and
replace it with a new one (3.b).
Lower the supporting frame with welding
filter (4.a) and fasten the metal locking spring
(4.b).
During assembly of the helmet and welding filter, or
during the replacement of the protective screens,
ensure that all parts are firmly in place thus prevent-
ing any light from entering the helmet. Should there
still be any light entering, repeat the procedure un-
til the problem is eliminated, otherwise the helmet
must not be used for welding. Before placing the
new protection screens, always remove the protec-
tive layers from both sides (Figure 6).

BATTERY REPLACEMENT
When the led diode located on the inner part of external controls housing starts to
blink, it is a warning for the batteries to be replaced.
Open the battery cover (1.).
Push the two pins into the direction of the bat-
teries, so the batteries will be pushed out (2.).
Remove the batteries and replace them with
the new ones. Push the new batteries back
to their position into the battery holders (3.a)
and close the battery cover (3.b.).

ELECTRO-OPTICAL WELDING FILTER
OPERATION
ESAB electro-optical welding protection filters operate on the basis of a liquid crystal opti-
cal light shutter that protects the welder’s eyes against intense visible light emitted during
the welding process. In combination with the permanent passive IR/UV filter, it protects
against hazardous infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) light. The protection against harmful
radiation is present regardless of the shade level or potential malfunction of the filter, up
to the darkest shade number marked on the product.
FIELD OF APPLICATION
ESAB filters are suitable for all types of electro-welding: covered electrodes, MIG/MAG,
TIG/WIG, plasma welding and cutting except for laser and gas welding.
FUNCTIONS
Shade:
NEW-TECH
TM
6-13 XL ADC plus electro-optical filter is supplied ready for use. Check the
degree of required protection for specific welding process and select the recommended
shade with the shade adjustment knob. NEW-TECH
TM
6-13 XL ADC plus has two shade
ranges, i.e. 6-8 and 9-13. It can be set by means of the knob »Range« which is located
on the filter. The external knob for shade adjustment has two shade ranges (6-8 and 9-
13) marked in two different typefaces (positive and negative). The current adjustment of
the knob »Range« defines the range which is being used.
Sensitivity:
Most welding applications can be performed with welding light sensitivity set to maxi-
mum. The maximum sensitivity level is appropriate for low welding current work, TIG, or
special applications. The welding light sensitivity has to be reduced only in some specific
surrounding lighting conditions in order to avoid unwanted triggering. As a simple rule for
optimum performance, it is recommended to set sensitivity to the maximum at the begin-
ning and then gradually reduce it, until the filter reacts only to the welding light flash and
without annoying spurious triggering due to ambient light conditions (direct sun, intensive
artificial light, neighboring welder’s arcs etc.).
Opening time delay adjustment:
The opening time delay can be adjusted from 0,2 to 0,8 seconds. It is recommended to
use a shorter delay with spot welding applications and a longer delay with applications
using higher currents. Longer delays can also be used for low current TIG welding in or-
der to avoid the filter opening when the light path to the sensors is temporarily obstructed
by a hand, torch, etc.
Function welding/grinding:

TM
6-13 XL ADC plus electro-optical welding filter can be used for both weld-
ing and grinding applications. By selecting the position »Grind«, the filter switches off and
it will not be triggered by the sparks generated during grinding. Before restarting welding
work, the knob should be set back to the »Weld« position.
