Replacement RAM Battery Kit Instructions
For P/N TBUM297592/TBUM297593/TBUM297594
Recommendations
Implement central monitoring of your RTU’s RAM battery voltage status to allow for notification in the event of battery
depletion.
o SCADAPack x70 devices provide a RAM battery status indication as well as RAM battery voltage that are
available as System Data Objects when using firmware version 9.1.2 or later with RemoteConnect configuration
software R2.1 or later.
o SCADAPack E RTUs provide a battery status indication (normal or low) as a system point. The threshold value
for the low indication is 3.1 V.
o Standard SCADAPack RTUs (including the 4203) maps the battery voltage reading to a Modbus register when
using Telepace firmware. When using IEC 61131-3 firmware with SCADAPack Workbench, the battery voltage
can be mapped to Modbus or DNP3 using an I/O connection. The recommended battery voltage notification
threshold is 3.1 V to indicate that the battery will soon need to be changed.
Handling the RAM Battery
Notice
DEVICE OR BATTERY DAMAGE
Treat batteries with care.
Follow the manufacturers’ instructions concerning battery storage, use and disposal.
Keep batteries clean and free from contaminants or other materials that could short the terminals.
Connect new batteries using the correct polarity.
Observe the manufacturers’ instructions regarding disposal or storage of batteries. Considerable energy remains in the
battery.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in equipment damage.
Replacing the RAM Battery
WARNING
EXPLOSION HAZARD
Do not attempt to replace the onboard battery when the device is
being used for ATEX or IECEx hazardous area applications.
Contact Schneider Electric Technical Support for further information.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death or
serious injury.
WARNING
UNEXPECTED EQUIPMENT OPERATION
Evaluate the operational state of the equipment being monitored or
controlled by the device before removing power.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death or
serious injury.
Removing the Old RAM Battery
1. Back-up your SCADAPack RTU configuration, user-created
applications, logs and other data to an external device so
that it can be reloaded when the procedure is complete.
2. Remove power from the SCADAPack RTU.
WARNING
STATIC ELECTRICITY DAMAGE
The electronics inside the RTU can be damaged by static
electricity.
Wear an anti-static wrist strap that is connected to ground when
changing the RAM battery. Failing to follow this step can cause
intermittent or total loss of RTU operation and will void the
warranty.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in equipment
damage.
3. Put on an anti-static wrist strap and verify that it is connected
to ground.
4. Remove the SCADAPack RTU cover.

5. Remove the existing tie wrap or battery clip:
For the tie wrap, keeping the cutting tool away from the
circuit board, carefully cut the tie wrap and remove it by
pushing one end back into the hole in the board, and
then pulling it out from the other end.
For the battery clip, using your thumb and index finger,
pinch either side of the battery clip and pull up.
6. Carefully remove the RAM battery from its socket by pulling
it away from the circuit card.
Inserting the Replacement RAM Battery
Each Ram battery is supplied with a battery clip like the one in
the picture below.
Notice
BATTERY DAMAGE
During handling, ensure that the RAM battery terminals are not
accidentally shorted.
Placing the RAM battery terminals down, on a conductive surface,
can cause the battery to short and will reduce the life of the
battery.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in equipment
damage.
1. Unpack the replacement RAM battery and place it on a non-
conductive surface until you are ready to insert it.
2. Carefully insert the RAM battery pins into the sockets on the
circuit board. Note that to maintain correct polarity and
positioning of the RAM battery, the (+) pin closest to the
center of the battery, must be placed in the corresponding
(+) socket near the center of the battery outline on the board.
3. Insert the first arrow head of the battery clip into the hole on
one side of the battery and press it until it clicks into place.
Note: If you have an MVT, you need to cut off the nipple
from the underside of the battery clip. See the video link in
the Replacing the 4203 MVT battery section below.
4. Press the other arrow head of the battery clip towards the
battery.
5. Push the arrow head down into the hole on the other side of
the battery until it clicks into place.
When the battery is correctly installed, it should look like the
following:
250379_V04
6. Reattach the SCADAPack RTU cover and tighten the screws
on the cover.
7. Start in Cold Boot mode:
Apply power to the SCADAPack RTU while holding
down the RST, Select, or LED POWER button,
depending on your device.
Hold the button until the Status LED begins blinking on
and off.
Release the button.
8. Reset the time on the SCADAPack RTU.
9. Reload the SCADAPack RTU configuration, data, and user-
created applications from the back-up.
Once the SCADAPack RTU has been recommissioned, test
with a 1-minute power down followed by a restart, to confirm
that it will automatically restart correctly after any power
interruptions.

Back up the configuration and data prior to replacing the
battery, so that it can be restored if the configuration is
lost while changing the battery.
