The Thermo Scientific™ Viper™ fingertight fitting technology is manufactured
under, or covered by, one or more US patents, which are listed on the following
website (does not apply to Viper blind plugs):
http://www.thermoscientific.com/en/about-us/promotions/virtual-patent-marks-hplc.html
The Thermo Scientific™ Viper™ fingertight fitting system provides ease of use and virtually zero-
dead-volume plumbing of every (U)HPLC system. It is available in a stainless steel (SST) version
or in biocompatible versions (MP35N® or PEEK™). Viper SST and Viper MP35N withstand
backpressures of up to 1300 bar (19,000 psi) and 1500 bar (22,000 psi) respectively, while Viper
PEEK can be operated up to 345 bar (5000 psi).
nanoViper™ is a fingertight fitting system for nano LC connections. It is preassembled and
therefore overcomes the difficulties associated with assembling PEEK sleeve connections.
nanoViper is compatible with backpressures up to 1200 bar (17,400 psi).
Due to the tip sealing design, Viper and nanoViper improve chromatographic results
independent of various different connection geometries. Both systems are compatible with
virtually any third-party valve and union.
Viper and nanoViper are fingertight fitting systems, which require only very small torques to
seal. Therefore, it is essential to follow the guidelines below to avoid damages by over-
tightening.
1. Attach Viper or nanoViper to the target thread and tighten the
screw slowly until you feel the very first resistance. This is the
mark. Do not use tools other than the black knurled screw
for loosening and tightening a connection.
2. Tighten the screw clockwise to an angle between and 45°
and start operating your system at the preferred working
pressure. Check whether all connections seal properly.
Usually, both fitting systems are tight after the first attempt.
3. If leakage occurs under these conditions, stop the flow and tighten the screw(s) gradually
further until the connection seals properly. Do not turn the screw by more than 90° to avoid
damage of the PEEK seal by over‐tightening. Do not apply force.
4. To extend the lifetime of Viper or nanoViper, loosen and tighten connections at atmospheric
system pressures only and at ambient temperature only. Loosening and tightening connections
at high system pressures or at temperatures higher than ambient can reduce the lifetime of the
fitting system.
For the connections of items, such as columns, which are difficult to grab firmly and to keep it
fixed by the hand while applying torque on the capillary and for the connection of MP35N
capillaries, please follow those additional steps:
5. Take the Viper fittings at the two ends of the column and twist
them simultaneously in opposite directions to an angle of
between 0 and 90 degrees maximum each site.
6. Start the flow and increase the pressure for few seconds and
then stop the flow.
7. Take the Viper fittings at the two ends of the column and tighten them again simultaneously in
opposite directions by a few additional degrees.
