About This User's Guide

Intended Audience

This manual is intended for people who want to use and configure the DMA.

Tips for Reading User’s Guides On-Screen

When reading a ZyXEL User’s Guide On-Screen, keep the following in mind:

• If you don’t already have the latest version of Adobe Reader, you can download

it from http://www.adobe.com.

• Use the PDF’s bookmarks to quickly navigate to the areas that interest you.

Adobe Reader’s bookmarks pane opens by default in all ZyXEL User’s Guide

PDFs.

• If you know the page number or know vaguely which page-range you want to

view, you can enter a number in the toolbar in Reader, then press [ENTER] to

jump directly to that page.

• Type [CTRL]+[F] to open the Adobe Reader search utility and enter a word or

phrase. This can help you quickly pinpoint the information you require. You can

also enter text directly into the toolbar in Reader.

• To quickly move around within a page, press the [SPACE] bar. This turns your

cursor into a “hand” with which you can grab the page and move it around freely

on your screen.

• Embedded hyperlinks are actually cross-references to related text. Click them to

jump to the corresponding section of the User’s Guide PDF.

Warnings and Notes

These are how warnings and notes are shown in this User’s Guide.

Warnings tell you about things that could harm you or your device.

Note: Notes tell you other important information (for example, other things you may

need to configure or helpful tips) or recommendations.

Syntax Conventions

• The DMA may be referred to as the “DMA”, the “device”, the “system” or the

“product” in this User’s Guide.

• Product labels, screen names, field labels and field choices are all in bold font.

• A key stroke is denoted by square brackets and uppercase text, for example,

[ENTER] means the “enter” or “return” key on your keyboard.

• “Enter” means for you to type one or more characters and then press the

[ENTER] key. “Select” or “choose” means for you to use one of the predefined

choices.

• A right angle bracket ( > ) within a screen name denotes a mouse click. For

example, Maintenance > Log > Log Setting means you first click

Maintenance in the navigation panel, then the Log sub menu and finally the

Log Setting tab to get to that screen.

• Units of measurement may denote the “metric” value or the “scientific” value.

For example, “k” for kilo may denote “1000” or “1024”, “M” for mega may

denote “1000000” or “1048576” and so on.

Safety Warnings

• Do NOT use this product near water, for example, in a wet basement or near a swimming

pool.

• Do NOT expose your device to dampness, dust or corrosive liquids.

• Do NOT store things on the device.

• Do NOT install, use, or service this device during a thunderstorm. There is a remote risk

of electric shock from lightning.

• Connect ONLY suitable accessories to the device.

• Do NOT open the device or unit. Opening or removing covers can expose you to

dangerous high voltage points or other risks. ONLY qualified service personnel should

service or disassemble this device. Please contact your vendor for further information.

• Make sure to connect the cables to the correct ports.

• Place connecting cables carefully so that no one will step on them or stumble over them.

• Always disconnect all cables from this device before servicing or disassembling.

• Use ONLY an appropriate power adaptor or cord for your device. Connect it to the right

supply voltage (for example, 110V AC in North America or 230V AC in Europe).

• Do NOT allow anything to rest on the power adaptor or cord and do NOT place the

product where anyone can walk on the power adaptor or cord.

• Do NOT use the device if the power adaptor or cord is damaged as it might cause

electrocution.

• If the power adaptor or cord is damaged, remove it from the device and the power

source.

• Do NOT attempt to repair the power adaptor or cord. Contact your local vendor to order a

new one.

• Do not use the device outside, and make sure all the connections are indoors. There is a

remote risk of electric shock from lightning.

• Do NOT obstruct the device ventilation slots, as insufficient airflow may harm your

device.

Your product is marked with this symbol, which is known as the WEEE mark. WEEE

stands for Waste Electronics and Electrical Equipment. It means that used electrical

and electronic products should not be mixed with general waste. Used electrical and

electronic equipment should be treated separately.

CHAPTER 1

Introducing the DMA

1.1 Overview

The DMA2501 plays digital audio, video, and photo files on your TV (instead of

your computer). The DMA has HDMI for high quality digital video and audio

output. The remote control lets you use your TV screen to browse and play your

digital content files and configure the DMA. The DMA includes built-in Microsoft

Windows Media Digital Rights Management for Network Devices (WMDRM-ND) to

enable the playback of protected streamed digital content.

Here, the DMA lets the TV play files stored on a connected USB hard drive. A wired

Ethernet connection lets the DMA play files on an NSA storage appliance and a

computer using the included media server software. The DMA can also play

Internet radio.

The DMA can also act as a wireless LAN client when you connect a compatible

ZyXEL IEEE 802.11n wireless USB adapter to the DMA’s USB port.

1.2 LEDs

The LEDs (lights) tell you about the current status of the DMA. The following table

describes the DMA LEDs.

Orange On The DMA is initializing.

Red On The DMA is off.

from the remote control.

The Remote Control

Use the remote control to navigate the menus, play files, and configure the DMA.

Point the remote control at the black dot on the front of the DMA. Here are the

button functions.

MUTE turns off the sound.

REC, FUNC and COPY are

reserved for future use.

Power turns the DMA on or off.

Help displays help information for a

screen.

OUTPUT switches the video output

type.

SORT/EPG rearranges the order of

the files.

SUBTITLE changes the subtitles.

LANGUAGE changes the language.

Press MENU while playing a DVD

file to open the DVD menu.

STOP function during file playback.

ZOOM zooms in on a photo or

video.

A-B lets you select start and stop

times to repeat an interval for a

playing music or video.

Use 0~9 to input numbers. Use

GOTO to jump to a specific

percentage (%) or time slice

(hh:mm) of a playing music or

video file.

Previous, and next functions during

file playback.

BACK return to the previous menu.

INFO displays details about the

playing video or photo file.

VOL -/+ adjust the

volume.

HOME return to the main

menu.

SETUP opens the SETUP

menu for configuring

settings.

BGM select and play

background music.

REPEAT keeps playing

(loops) the file.

ROTATE turns a photo 90°

clockwise.

SLOW/SLIDE functions to

slow down a playing video

or display pictures

automatically.

Use the OK and arrow

buttons to go through the

menus and play your files.

IMEDIA opens a menu of

Internet media to play.

PICTURES opens a menu

of picture files to view.

VIDEO opens a menu of video files

to play.

MUSIC opens a menu of music files

to play.

DMA Menus

3.1 Overview

The DMA uses menus that display on your television screen. The HOME (main)

menus are the first things you see when you turn on the DMA.

Use the remote control’s OK, BACK and arrow buttons to navigate the menus,

configure the DMA and play your files.

•Use Video, Music and Photo (see this chapter, Chapter 5 on page 31, and

Chapter 6 on page 35) to select and play files from connected USB sticks,

network shared folders or media servers.

•Use iMedia (see Chapter 7 on page 39) to play files located on the Internet.

•Use Setup (see Chapter 8 on page 43) to configure the DMA.

3.2 Video Menu Description

The following are some general menu screen descriptions. A video menu is shown

here as an example. Other menus work in a similar way.

AREA DESCRIPTION

A List of the files or folders.

B This shows the name of the selected file or folder.

C This displays the number of the selected items followed by the total number

of items. In this example menu, the first of fifteen items is selected.

D Click this to change how items are displayed. Options are: large icons, small

icons or list view.

E Use this icon to change the sort order and sort method of items. The options

are: A to Z, Z to A or File size.

You can also press the remote control’s SORT/EPG button to open the

Sorting screen.

F You can play audio files as background music while you use the DMA’s menus

or play photo files or slideshows. Click this to configure the background

music list.

Add this file - adds the selected audio file to the background music list. This

option is available when a file is selected. See Section 5.3 on page 33 for

more information.

Add all files - adds all audio files in the currently displayed folder or all

audio files in the selected folder to the background music list.

Delete all files - deletes all audio files in the currently displayed folder or all

audio files in the selected folder from the background music list.

Edit - views and edits the background music list.

Play/Next - starts playing the background music files or go to the next

background music file.

Stop - stops playing the background music files.

You can also press the remote control’s BGM button to open the

Background Music screen.
