3.2 Safe use
Read and observe the safety notes in these operating instructions!
Use the device in accordance with its intended and approved purpose only.
We cannot be held liable for damage caused by incorrect or unauthorized use or
non-compliance with these operating instructions.
Before installation and commissioning, make sure that the device is not damaged.
Work on the device (installation, maintenance, overhaul, repair) may only be carried
out by appropriately authorized and trained personnel.
During installation and operation observe the information (characteristic values) on the
rating and data plates as well as the information plates located on the device.
Always consult with R. STAHL Schaltgeräte GmbH if operating conditions deviate from
the technical data.
The media converter 9721 is approved for use in gas hazardous areas of Zone 2 and
in the safe area.
The media converter 9721 is approved for use in dust hazardous areas of Zone 22.
When operated in gas or dust hazardous areas, the media converter 9721 must be
installed in an enclosure which fulfils the requirements of IEC/EN 60079-15
and IEC/EN 60079-31.
The plug connectors of the RJ45 and of the auxiliary power must neither be connected
nor disconnected in hazardous areas during operation.
3.3 Modifications and alterations
4 Function and device design
4.1 Function
The media converters 9721 are used for changing electrical Ethernet networks (TX) to
fibre optic (FX). Fibre optic is used for operation in hazardous areas of Zone 0, 1 and 2
with the type of protection "op is" (IEC/EN 60079-28). Therefore, conventional fibre optic
cables can also be used in hazardous areas and may be connected and
disconnected during operation (hot-swap). In particular, they are suitable for
operation of a Remote I/O system IS1+ Ethernet in Zone 1.

6.2 Auxiliary power
The connection line of the auxiliary power must be protected from tensile strain
and abrasion

Transport and store the device only in the original packaging.
Store the device in a dry place (no condensation) and vibration-free.
Do not drop the device.
8 Mounting and installation
The media converter 9721 is approved for use in gas hazardous areas of Zone 2
and in the safe area.
The media converter 9721 is approved for use in dust hazardous areas of Zone 22.
DANGER
Do not install the device without enclosure in the hazardous areas!
Explosion protection is impaired!
When operated in gas or dust hazardous areas, the module must be
installed in an enclosure which fulfils the requirements of
IEC/EN 60079-15 and IEC/EN 60079-31.

Carry out installation strictly according to the instructions and national
safety and accident prevention regulations to maintain the explosion
protection.
The device must only be installed by trained qualified personnel. For this

8.2.2 Dismounting / replacement of the module
Switch off the auxiliary power.
Loosen and remove safety screws of the pluggable terminals VDC1 / GND.
Remove the fibre optic cable from the media converter 9721
Remove the RJ45 Ethernet cable from the media converter 9721.
Remove or replace the media converter 9721.

8.3 Installation
8.3.1 Connection of the auxiliary power
Connect the auxiliary power to the terminals VDC 1 and GND.
The nominal voltage of auxiliary power is 24 V DC (see data sheet).
Secure the pluggable terminals on the media converter 9721 against loosening by
means of screws (tightening torque 0.5 ... 0.6 Nm).
8.3.2 Connecting the FO cable
For the media converter 9721, standardized SC plugs are used.
Insert the FO cable into the SC plug connector of the transmitter and receiver channel
and make sure that the plug locks into place.
8.3.3 Connecting the RJ45
Connect the Ethernet cable to the socket of the media converter 9721 via
a RJ45 plug.
WARNING
Check the device before commissioning!
Explosion protection is impaired!
The connection cable for auxiliary power must neither be connected nor
disconnected in hazardous areas during operation!
NOTICE
Mounting can be carried out with connected or disconnected terminal.
Remove the dust cap only immediately prior to connecting the plug
connectors! This prevents the transmitting and receiving elements from
becoming dirty. The same applies to the protective caps on the plug
connectors.
WARNING
During operation do not look directly into the emitting diodes or into the fibre
optic cable while using optical aids! Viewing the laser output through certain
optical instruments (e.g. magnifying glasses and microscopes) at a distance

9 Parameterization and commissioning
No parameterization has to be carried out at the media converter 9721.
Before commissioning, make sure that:
the device has been installed according to regulations,
the cables have been connected correctly,
the device and the connection cables are not damaged,
the screws in the terminals have been tightened firmly. Make sure, that the correct
tightening torque is used (chapter "Installation").
10 Operation
10.1 Operation
After locking the electrical lines into place, connecting them and observing the
appropriate commissioning steps (see chapter "Parameterization and Commissioning"),
the auxiliary power source must be switched on.
10.2 Indication
Meaning of the LEDs
WARNING
Check the device before commissioning!
Explosion protection is impaired!
Observe the inspection requirements in the current national regulations
before commissioning in order to maintain the explosion protection.
Check the device for proper installation and function before
commissioning.

11 Maintenance and repair
11.1 Maintenance
Consult the relevant national regulations to determine the type and extent of
inspections.
Adapt inspection intervals to the operating conditions.
During maintenance of the device, check at least:
whether the clamping screws holding the electric lines are securely seated,
whether the device enclosure and / or protective enclosure have cracks or other
visible signs of damage,
whether the permissible ambient temperatures are observed,
whether the device is used according to its designated use.

The media converter 9721 does not require regular maintenance.

Download the service form and fill it out.
Send the device along with the service form in the original packaging to

Observe national and local regulations and statutory regulation regarding disposal.
