Chapter 1
Preparation
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Certain components of a Network 3000-series or ControlWave-series process controller can
be tested for hardware faults, using the Open BSI Diagnostics utility program. The Diag-
nostics utility program is included on the Open BSI Software CD-ROM, and is installed,
and executed, from the PC workstation. The PC workstation must be connected to the
controller for which diagnostic testing is to be performed.
Within the Diagnostics utility program, controllers are referred to by the term 'RTU'.
1.2 DIAGNOSTIC TEST CONFIGURATIONS
A Network 3000-series controller may be tested as a stand-alone unit or as part of a
redundant pair. ControlWaves, ControlWave MICROs, ControlWave EFMs, Control-
Wave GFC-CLs, ControlWave GFCs, ControlWave Express, ControlWave
ExpressPACs ControlWave XFCs, ControlWave Correctors, ControlWave LPs,
ControlWave I/O Expansion Racks, Control-Wave_10s, ControlWave_30s and
ControlWave_35s are tested as stand-alone units while ControlWave REDs are tested as
part of a redundant pair. This chapter describes general requirements for all
configurations. Subsequent chapters describe the various categories of testing available, for
a stand-alone unit. Chapter 13 is devoted to the special requirements of the 3330
redundancy diagnostics.
The following controllers are supported by the Diagnostics utility program: RTU 3305, RTU

1.4 HARDWARE REQUIRED
In order to run the Diagnostics utility, you must install it (via the appropriate kit on the
Open BSI CD-ROM) onto your PC workstation.
Warning
PC workstations are NOT certified for operation in hazardous areas. Make sure
that these devices are only used in a safe environment. Failure to do so may
result in property damage, injury and/or loss of life.
In addition to the PC workstation, you will need the external test equipment listed in Table
1-6 for checking and calibrating internal circuitry. Test equipment requirements are
reiterated in the various chapters.

1.5 CONNECTING THE PC TO THE CONTROLLER
Connect a cable between an RS-232 serial port (e.g. COM1, COM2) on the PC Workstation,
and one of the serial ports on the controller (RTU). The controller port must have been
configured for either RS-232 or RS-423 operation. The choice of serial ports on the controller
depends on the type of controller, and the diagnostic loads being used:
• For 186-based controllers, connect to Port A
•
For 386EX-Real Mode controllers, connect to Port BIP 1
•
For 386EX Protected Mode controllers, connect to Port BIP 1
•
For CW_10 RTUs or CW_30/35 DPCs, connect to any RS-232 Port except the Utility
Port

1.7 ESTABLISHING COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE RTU
Communications between the RTU (controller), and the PC workstation, are controlled by
Open BSI software. Open BSI provides two different utilities for performing com-
munication; LocalView and NetView.
NetView is available only if you have loaded the OpenBSI Essentials kit.
LocalView is available in the OpenBSI Essentials, ControlWave Designer, Technician
Toolkit, and ACCOL Workbench kits.
The choice of whether to use LocalView or NetView is up to the user, however, if you choose
NetView, you must have already included the controller as part of your Bristol Babcock
network configuration files.
1.7.1 Establishing Communications Using LocalView:
Prerequisites:
Before establishing communications with a locally attached controller (RTU), you need to:
• Connect the PC communication cable to one of the available serial ports on the
controller (either BIP 1, BIP2, Port A through D, or Port G through J) for a Network
3000-series controller, for a CW_10 ports 1 through 6, for a CW_30 ports 1 through 6 or
1 through 10, for a CW_35 ports 3 through 6, 9 and 10, for a ControlWave ports COM1,
COM2 or COM4, for ControlWave MICROs and ControlWave EFMs ports COM1,
COM2, COM4 or COM8, for a ControlWave GFC-CL/GFC/Express/ExpressPAC/-
XFC or a ControlWave Corrector ports COM1 or COM2, for a ControlWave I/O
Expansion Rack ports COM1 or COM2, for a ControlWave LP ports COM1 through
COM5 or for a ControlWave RED ports COM1, COM2 or COM4 of either CPUA or
CPUB or to COM1, COM2, COM3 or COM4 of the CCRS Module.
 For Network 3000 users, if an ACCOL load is already running in the unit, you must
choose a port already configured as a Slave, Pseudo Slave, or Pseudo Slave with Alarms
Port. If the unit is empty (no ACCOL load running) the first thing you need to do is to
download an ACCOL load.
 For Network 3000 users, you must know the baud rate of the port you are connecting to,
as configured in the running ACCOL load. If there is no running ACCOL load (unit is
