1 GENERAL
The ADC 16

1 Unity-Gain Combiner-Amplifier Panel (UGC Panel) is designed for use in
19-inch or 23-inch equipment racks (the mounting ears are reversible). Its function is to
combine 16 sub-split signals into a single output signal. This panel is powered from facility
100 to 260 VAC 50/60 Hz through a standard modular power cord and uses active circuits to
achieve 0 dB of insertion loss. Figure 1 shows a typical application of the UGC Panel.
All signal connections to the UGC Panel are made through standard 75-ohm F- or BNC-type
female RF coaxial connectors on the rear panel. There is also a front panel (20 dB down)
MONITOR connector for test equipment access to the UGC Panel’s output signal.

This section provides functional, physical, and technical descriptions of the 16

1 Unity-Gain
Combiner-Amplifier Panel.
2.1 Functional Description
Sixteen separate inputs can be applied to the input connectors of the Unity-Gain Combiner
Panel. Within the panel the input signals are applied to a summing circuit that combines them
into a single output RF signal. The output of the summing circuit is amplified, then applied to
a 20 dB directional coupler that taps off a portion of the output signal for monitoring purposes
at the front panel monitor jack.
2.2 Physical Description
The UGC Panel is a putty white rack mount chassis measuring 19” W

A coaxial connector (F- or BNC-type, depending on model ordered) labeled 20 dB
MONITOR is mounted on the front panel for signal monitoring purposes.
The UGC’s power input is located on the rear panel, as is the power switch. A green POWER
LED on the front panel indicates the status of the power supply.

Note
: The mounting ears on the UGC panel can be reversed (with the longer sides
extended) for mounting the panel in a 23-inch rack.

1 Unity-Gain Combiner-Amplifier Panel in Rack
1. At the designated rack location, align the mounting holes in the panel mounting ears
with the threaded holes in the rack, then mount the panel on the rack with four #12-24
screws. (See Figure 2.)
2. Connect AWG 18 (or larger) stranded wire to the FRM GND screw on the rear panel
(see Figure 3).
3. Connect the designated cables to the F or BNC connectors (depending on model
selected) 1 through 16 on the rear panel.
4. Using a modular power cord, connect the switch to a convenient source of AC input
voltage, (for 220 volt operation see Section 3.1).
Warning
:
The Unity Gain Combiner is factory set for 120 VAC operation. For 240 VAC
operation, refer to subsection 3.1, Configuring the Unity Gain Combiner for 220 to 240 VAC
Operation.
5. Ensure that the Power LED is lit (GREEN), indicating that the unit is receiving power.

3.1 Configuring the Unity Gain Combiner for 220 to 240 VAC Operation
The Unity Gain Combiner is factory set for 120 VAC operation, with “115V” showing as the
voltage setting in the power inlet module window (Figure 4). To configure the unit for 220 to
240 VAC operation, perform the following:

The Unity Gain Combiner is supplied with a detachable power cord for 120 VAC
operation. For 240 VAC operation, consult your local electrical code for the correct type
or style of power cords required.
1. Make sure the power cord is removed from the power inlet module before continuing.
2. Pry open the power inlet module door from the right side using a small screwdriver or
equivalent.
3. Remove the fuse module using a small screwdriver or equivalent.
4. Rotate the fuse module 180° so that the text “230V” will show through the power inlet
module window when the door is closed.
5. Place the fuse module back into the power inlet module, making sure that the fuse
module is seated properly.
6. Close the power inlet module door, making sure that it snaps firmly into place, and that
“230V” does show through the window.
7. Connect the correct type of power cord corresponding to the local electrical code.
8. Ensure that the Power LED is lit (GREEN), indicating that the unit is receiving power.
