INTRODU

CTION

This section is intended for users who have not received the operation training but want to get the instrument up

and running. It also contains useful reference information on the set-up of the instrument (hardware and

software) and on packing the i

nstrument in order to ship it.

This section also contains information on the handling of hygroscopic materials and should be studied by

customers having ordered optional hygroscopic optics for their MR system.

UNPACKING AND SETUP

a.

The

MR spectrometer system and its accessories may come in up to 4 different carrying cases depending on the

options selected at purchase.

Upon reception of the material check for any external damage to

the carrying cases. If any damage is observed,

please notify the courier and have this stated on the packing slip. This is important for making a claim should the

equipment have been damaged during shipment. Please notify the After Sales Service Departme

nt at ABB.

Before unpacking the system a minimum delay of 12 hours is recommended to allow the equipment to

reach thermal equilibrium with the environment. This will help prevent any moisture condensation on the

optics.

Most MR systems use ZnSe optics whi

ch are non hygroscopic but they can optionally be supplied with

KBr or other hygroscopic materials. When this is the case special precautions need to be taken to avoid

damaging the optics, please refer to “Handling and Care of Hygroscopic Materials”.

HARDWARE STARTUP

a.

CONNECTOR PLATES

There is only one connection between the Spectroradiometer and

the computer: a 25 pins serial cable for the

MR100 or an optical fibre cable for the MR200. One end of the data cable connects to the respective connector

plate for each instrument as indicated on the next two figures.

In addition to the data connector, the resolution setting knob, the AC power inlet, input power

selection, on-off switch and status LED’s can be found on this connector plate. The POWER led is

always on when t

he instrument is powered up. The other LEDs are used to provide the instrument status

during power and operation. When the instrument is first turned on the SCAN and DATA LEDs comes

on to indicate that the instrument is searching for the ZPD position. Once the ZPD is located the ZPD

LED comes on and the SCAN LED is turned off. When the instrument starts normal scanning the ZPD

LED is off and the DATA LED comes on for every scan to indicate that data is being transferred to the

PC.

The resolution setting kn

ob is used to set the spectral resolution of the instrument. Please note that the

resolution setting of the MR100 is not controlled by software. The resolution setting is effective right

after the selection is made. The scan length is a function of the res

olution setting. After changing this

setting, the frequency at which the DATA LED’s flashes changes accordingly.

Please note that the data cable can be connected or disconnected at any time whether the unit is turned

on or not. Doing so will not harm the

equipment.

In addition to the data connector, the AC power inlet, input power selection, on

-

off switch and status

display can be found on this connector plate. The status display is alw

ays active when the instrument is

powered up. It is used to show the progress of the power up self test sequence and to indicate faults in

the instrument. When the instrument is working correctly the display will show 7, 9 or A depending on

the revision of

the instrument control code. The following table list the meaning of the different status

The ACTIVE LEDs on the instrument and on the DSP board indicate that the fibre optic link is

functioning properly and that there is communication between the DSP board, located in the computer,

and the unit itself. These LEDs will only turn on when there is power on both the MR200 and the host

computer and when

the fibre optic cable is properly connected.

Please note that the fibre optic data cable can be connected or disconnected at any time whether the unit

is turned on or not. Doing so will not harm the equipment.

For both MR100 and MR200, the other end of t

he data connects to the DSP board which must be installed in the

host computer. The DSP board differs for the MR100 and MR200.

MR100:

The DSP board occupies

two

ISA slots in the host computer. Only one external connector is available

and is used for the connection of the DB-25 serial data cable. The board is displayed on the next two

figures.

MR200:

The DSP board occupies

three

ISA slots in the host computer. Two connectors are available. On is

used for the connection of the fibre optic data cable. The other (DB-25) is an unused RS232 port. This

port could be used to receive RS232 signals coming from an IRIG-B time code converter. The board is

displayed on the next two figures.

b.

INSTALLATION OF THE DSP BOARD IN THE HOST COMPUTER

WARNING:

Do not perform the following instructions while the computer is turned on. Inserting or removing

interface boards from the computer while power is on may permanently damag

e the boards and/or the computer.

The computer, if purchased from ABB comes with the DSP board already installed. It is nevertheless desired to

verify that the DSP board is properly inserted in its slots and that all chips are properly inserted in their s

ockets.

This is especially important for the RAM chips. Please perform a visual inspection of the RAM chips before

applying power on the computer. You may refer to the pictures of the DSP above for their locations on the DSP

board. You may also perform a visual inspection of the proper insertion of the ISA connector in the slot. Should

it look outside or not evenly inserted in the slot, please push gently on the DSP board, making sure that it is well

inserted in the slots.

When the computer is not purchased from ABB, the DSP board comes delivered as a separate item. To install it

in the computer, please proceed as follows:

1. Make sure the power is removed from the computer

2. You must touch the case of the computer to make sure you are properly grounded otherwise you are taking

the risk of permanently damaging the board when inserting it in the computer. Using a ground strap is

recommended.

3.

Remove the cover from the computer. Please refer to your computer manual for instructions.

4.

Once the cover is removed, the

mother board and other existing boards appear as follows:

5. You must locate two adjacent free slots for the installation of the MR100 DSP, three for the MR200. You

may have to re-

arrange the location of existing boards to achieve that

goal.

6. Some blank holding plates (please refer to A on the above picture) may be present and must be removed.

Please keep the screws. They will be required to secure the DSP board after installation.

7. Insert the DSP board as shown in the above picture. Be careful no to interfere with wires and other boards.

A PC computer normally includes some guiding slides (please refer to B on the above picture) which must

be used to ensure that the ISA connector will arrive right on the slot of the motherboard. Make sure that the

edges of the DSP PC board are inserted in these slides before inserting the board.

8. Once the board is fully inserted, apply a bit more pressure for the ISA connector to enter in the slot of the

motherboard.

9.

Once the board is inserted in the slot,

install the screws (please refer to C on the above picture) to secure the

board.

10. At this point, the board is installed. Do not put the cover on the computer right away. You may want to

check that the instrument is fully operational before doing so.

11. Apply p

ower on the computer and make sure that it boots normally, indicating no major hardware problem.

12. At this point, the computer is ready to be connected to the Spectroradiometer to perform a basic

communication test.

c.

PUTTING THE BASIC SYSTEM TOGETHER

An ope

rational Spectroradiometer requires the following basic elements to be interconnected together:

The Spectroradiometer unit must be connected to the computer

One or two detectors must be installed and if cryogenic, must be filled with liquid nitrogen

Power

must be connected and applied to both the spectroradiometer and the computer

In addition, the following equipment may be added to the unit (please refer to the alignment manual for more

information about installation):

A cold source.

An input collimator

if purchased, if not a window is present.

A telescope (can be installed if the input collimator is present).

A video camera and monitor

The following steps must be followed to set

-

up the instrument as a minimal operational system:

1.

Remove the Spectroradi

ometer from its carrying case and install in at a stable location. Two persons are

required to perform this operation. Use the handles located each side of the instrument to carry it. Do not

attempt to do it alone.

2.

Remove the white cover on top of the inst

rument. The cover is held in place by small latches, which must be

loosened.

3.

The instrument has provision for one or two detectors depending on the configuration purchased.

IMPORTANT: Make sure the power is off on the instrument before proceeding to the n

ext step.

4.

Install one or two detectors on the top cover as laid out on the next figure:

When putting the detector module(s) in place, please watch for the two dowel pins that guide the detector to

its proper location. When the detector

module is in place, secure it to the output optics plate by tightening

the two captive screws located at the bottom of the module.

6.

For the MR100, plug the two telephone type connectors into the preamplifier. There are two cables to

connect and the size of

the connectors differs permitting only one location per cable. This is not required for

the MR200 as the connection is made automatically when the detector is installed in place. This is done via

a 50 pin connector installed on the output optics plate. Ma

ke sure that cryogenic detectors are properly filled

with Liquid Nitrogen.

7.

At this point the detector module(s) is(are) in place and the power can be applied to the instrument.

8.

Insert the power cable into the socket located on the connector plate of the in

strument.

9.

Connect the data cable at the proper location on the connector plate of the instrument.

10.

Connect the other end of the cable into the DSP board located inside the computer.

11.

Turn on both the computer and the spectroradiometer.

Watch the status indic

ated on the connector plate of the spectroradiometer and check that the correct LED

sequence is followed.

Start the acquisition software from the computer (please refer to the next section or the software manual)

and go into the alignment/status screen whe

re the interferogram and spectral data are displayed in real time.

14.

At this point, the system is operational and data can be acquired.

4.

SOFTWARE STARTUP

a.

Software installation

Research Acquire requires an IBM compatible computer running DOS 5 or later. It must have a minimum of 4

megabytes of free RAM and at least 10 megabytes of disk space. It will also run under Windows 3.x and

Windows 9x as a DOS program. If ABB supplied your computer, Research Acquire was preinstalled at the

factory. Otherwise, install the software by inserting the distribution diskette into the floppy disk drive and

typing:

Under Windows use the Run command to run install.

This will bring up a dialog box that prompts for an installation directory and an instrument type (see figure 1).

By default the install program will install the software into C: \ACQUIRE but this can be changed to install the

software in any directory on the computer. The install pro gram also needs to know what kind of instrument will

be running with Research Acquire in order to correctly configure the software

; use No Instrument on computers

that are only going to be used for post processing and not for data acquisition.

Once the two fields are correctly set, press E to start the installation process. The installation process will

take a few minutes; progress will be reported by a bar graph.

Once the installation is completed the software can be run at any time by typing:

ACQUIRE E

The program will load and after a few seconds the instrument initialisation screen will appear followed after a

short pause by the start-up screen. These screens will look like figures 2 and 3.
