Stûv 30-up : 3 modes of operation
In glass door mode, your stove offers
excellent efficiency and good visibility
of the flames.
In solid door fully closed mode, your
stove offers the best efficiency. This
mode is also used when the stove is
slowing down or operating at a lower
rate.
Use your stove in open fire mode to
reload or for barbecues (efficiency is
lower).
That’s hot !
When the stove is in operation (i.e.
when the lighting phase is complete),
there is a large bed of embers, and the
logs produce large attractive flames.
The temperature in the combustion
chamber [a] is very high and the heat
dissipates in two main ways :
by radiation through the glass door
or the walls,
by convection: the air circulates
in the double wall [b] around the
combustion chamber and reheats
before distributing around the room
[c]. The hot air also dissipates along
the convection column [d].
Conserving heat
The chimney flue [e] is filled with
hot gases much lighter than the air
outside and which therefore only
want to rise. We say that the chimney
“draws” them. The chimney literally
sucks up the gases contained in the
stove. However, the gases and the
heat that they contain must not be
allowed to escape too easily from the
chimney.
If your stove is closed in the solid door
or glass door modes, two devices stop
this :
Firstly, the air required for
combustion can only enter the
stove through a valve system [f],
i.e. an adjustable opening, which
enables you to control the quantity
necessary to obtain the rate
required.
Thus the hot gases cannot flood
directly into the chimney; they have
to follow a system of deflectors
How does the Stûv 30-up work ?
(g) which constitute a second
bottleneck.
The heat in the stove increases
owing to these bottlenecks, which is
one of the objectives aimed at. The
higher the temperature, the more
completely combustion takes place
(better efficiency) and the more toxic
emissions are reduced.
In open fire mode...
You can enjoy a view of large,
attractive flames, the crackling of the
embers and the smell of the wood fire.
But your stove provides heat less
effectively.
Lots more air floods into the
combustion chamber [a]. To avoid
back draughts, the deflector [g]
is raised. The air (and the heat it
contains), which is not blocked,
escapes much more quickly into the
chimney [e].
This is why we recommend that you
most frequently use your stove closed.
Exactly what’s required where it’s
required !
The air required for combustion
is strictly reduced to the amount
necessary and, when the stove is in
operation, it is distributed as follows :
a small amount feeds the base of
the flames [h],
another quantity enters the
combustion chamber through small
holes arranged between the bricks
(i) at the back of the chamber and
ignites the residual gases in the
upper part of the stove; this is post-
combustion,
a final quantity sweeps the glass [j]
to prevent smoke from condensing
there. This air is also used in post-
combustion.
You determine the rate of the stove by
controlling the amount of combustion
air using the control valve [f]. This has
been designed to optimally distribute
airflows in a single action whatever
the rate chosen.

Fuel
Which wood should you choose ?
Different kind of wood have different
heat capacities and do not burn in the
same way.
Generally you should opt for hard
wood such as oak, beech, ash,
hornbeam or fruit trees. They produce
lovely flames and a lot of embers
which will glow for a long time.
Drying
Whatever the wood chosen it should
be really dry. Damp wood heats a
great deal less and a great part of the
energy is used to evaporate the water
it contains. The sapwood – as the soft
wood just beneath the bark is called
can contain up to 75% of water.
Furthermore, moist wood releases a
lot of smoke and not many flames and
it causes the fireplace, its window and
the flue to get dirty and soot up. Big
logs should be split for the wood to
dry better. Wood should be covered
or sheltered from the rain, but well
ventilated.
Generally you should allow two years
for the wood to dry properly. You will
soon learn to estimate the dryness of
logs by weighing them in your hand.
The dryer they are the lighter they will
feel, and they will produce a clearer
sound when you knock two together.
Beech [photo1], ash
Firewood to be recommended: they
dry quickly and are readily available.
They should be stored under shelter as
soon as they have been cut and split
otherwise they rot very quickly and
lose their heat capacity. They are easy
to ignite, provide dynamic fires and
rather bright flames.
Oak [photo2]
An excellent fuel but – contrary to
other wood – must remain unsheltered
for 2 years so that rain can wash away
the tannins it contains. Then it should
be stored under shelter for another
two years or so before being suitable
for burning. There is a significant
proportion of sapwood (which burns
too quickly) in small branches. Oak
burns slowly, provides a quiet fire
and gives nice embers. This is ideal
for having a barbecue and a fire at a
lower rate.
Hornbeam [photo3],
cherry wood [photo4], fruit trees
Excellent fuels but scarce. These are
hard woods providing nice flames,
harmonious, quiet and give nice
embers. This is ideal for having a
barbecue or a less intense fire.
Birch [photo5], lime, chestnut,
poplar, robinia, acacia
These are broad-leaved trees
producing soft wood. They provide
nice but lively flames and few embers.
Wood burns fast and will be used to
light or rekindle the fire.
Warning : Poplar produces abundant
and volatile embers. Robinia and
acacia can cause important ember
projections.
Conifers
They produce a lot of heat but burn
quickly; they sputter embers and the
resin they contain foul up the flue.
They should be avoided.
Unsuitable
Stûv stoves are designed for domestic
use, and should never be used for
burning waste of any kind. Only
burn wood logs ; do not burn coal,
chipboard, varnished or chemically
treated wood or any other fuel not
recommended (no liquid fuels). The
heat produced by these materials is
too intense and can damage your
stove (including the glass door which
can become cloudy) and cause it
to soot up. They give off toxic and
polluting emanations.

Recommendations
USE
Important !
This stove should have been installed
in accordance with good practice
guidelines and local and national
regulations. A qualified professional
should have ensured that the
characteristics of the smoke flue and
the surroundings are suitable for the
stove installed.
Read this user guide carefully
and follow the maintenance
recommendations.
Complete and return the guarantee
certificate [at the end of this
document] to us.
Use
The stoves in the Stûv30-up range
are designed to operate with the door
closed.
The stove should be used in
accordance with local and national
regulations and European standards.
Some authorities impose or restrict the
conditions of use depending on the
fuel used. Please bear this in mind.
Some parts of the stove – the glass
door and the outside walls – may
become very hot even during normal
usage (rated power) and significant
heat may be radiated from the glass
door.
If provision is made for removable
protection for the floor covering, it
must be in place each time the stove
is used.
In order to prevent any damage or
risk of fire, when the stove is in use,
remove all heat-sensitive objects from
the radiation area [diagram1]. Take
particular care when you leave the
room.
Do not leave young children without
supervision in the room where the
stove is installed.
Ensure the air inlets and outlets are
always kept clear.
Repairs / Maintenance
Any modification carried out to the
system may cause danger and will
invalidate your guarantee. Only use
Stûv spare parts in the case of repairs.
Should a fire in the flue get out of
control
Do not open the stove's door during
the initial period.
Close the air valve completely using
the cold grip [photo2].
Call the fire brigade.
If the fire has not died down after
a few minutes, use a dry powder,
soda acid or sand extinguisher (never
water).
After a chimney fire, ventilate the
room where the stove is situated.
Initial cautions
Before lighting the first fire in your
new stove, ensure no items used
in installation (spray paint, tube of
grease, tools) have been left in the
combustion chamber or in the bends.
The paint is not oven-baked ; it is
thus relatively fragile but will harden
when heated for the first few times.
Consequently, take care when
handling the appliance.
When lighting the fire for the first
few times, some smoke or unpleasant
odours may be released from the
paint, the steel’s protective oil or the
drying of the bricks. We recommend
that you keep your first fire burning
strongly for several hours with the
windows open. The paint will harden
and the odours will disappear.
The paint of some components inside
the combustion chamber will be
replaced by a layer of carbon.
Have the chimney cleaned and
inspected by a professional. Have
repairs carried out if necessary.

Handling
Opening the doors
Use the cold grip like a lock key to
open and close the doors. Always lock
the doors before rotating the drum
[photo 1].
Rotation of the drum
Put the tip of the cold grip into the
cylinder on the left [photo 4].
Move towards the centre of the stove
(lever effect) to release the drum.
Revolve the drum by 1 or 2 thirds to
the right as far as the stopper [photos
5 & 6]. Ensure you always revolve the
drum from left to right. Reclose the
flap [photo 7].

Handling (continuation)
Controlling air intake
The combustion air is controlled in
3ways :
The outside vent (option)
prevents the house from getting cold
when the stove is not in operation.
Pull the back control to open the air
inlet [photo 2 A]. Push it back to close
the air inlet. It should be open when
the stove is in operation.
The “open fire” valve (option)
is designed to increase the intake
of outside air when the stove is
operating in open fire mode and is
therefore consuming lots of air. Pull
the front control to open the air inlet
[photo 3 B]. Push it back to close the
air inlet.
The valve of the stove enables
the fine regulation of air intake to
control combustion with the stove
closed (glass door and solid door
fully closed). Turn in a clockwise
direction to increase air intake and in
the opposite direction to decrease it
[photo 4 and 5].

Lighting the fire !
Before lighting
After a period of inactivity, check
that there are no obstructions in the
system, its ducts or the air inlets and
outlets or any mechanical blockages.
Your Stûv requires air
Your Stûv requires air for combustion.
If your installation engineer has
provided a fresh air inlet at the back
or under the stove :
open the outside valve completely;
– in open fire mode, open all the air
inlets.
If you have not created an outside air
inlet under the stove (or nearby) to
feed combustion, create a sufficient
outside air inlet (Ø63mm) in
adherence with all applicable local and
national regulations.
This diameter is sufficient for a single
Stûv 30-up stove.
Always keep this air inlet clear.
Please note that the operation of
your stove may be affected (risk of
draught-back) if other air consuming
systems are installed in the same
room (air extractor, kitchen hood,
air conditioning system). Create
additional air inlets in the room based
on their consumption.
A Basic Principle
Get the fire burning strongly to heat
up the stove and to encourage a good
draught.
If you have installed an external air
inlet, open the necessary valves (see
the “Controlling air intake” section).
When the stove is lit, the chimney
flue is full of cold air (heavier than
smoke). If the start-up fire is not
strong enough, the smoke will not
get past this bottleneck and the stove
will produce a back draught. To eject
this column, a strong fire is required
which will produce a sufficiently large
quantity of hot gases.
Use plenty of newspaper and kindling.
Light the fire in the solid door fully
closed position. Put 5 or 6 crumpled
sheets of newspaper on the bottom of
the stove.
Cover this with kindling wood: around
1kg [photo 1].
Open the air valve to the maximum
(clockwise direction) [photo 2 and 3].
Light the paper in several places.
Leave the door half-open (against the
smoke deflector control).
This slight opening allows :
direct feeding of the fire with air
without going through the normal
route [diagram page 9 f];
the introduction of the quantity of
air required to gradually reheat the
combustion chamber;
also by opening the stove, you
trigger a mechanism that enables
the smoke to take a short-cut and to
enter the chimney directly without
having to go around the deflector.
After 3 or 4 minutes, when the
kindling is alight, load 2 or 3 small
logs without bark (no big logs; the
bark burns less well than chopped
wood and they offer the flames less
surface area). Leave the stove half-
open.
When the small logs are alight, put on
a normal load and close the stove.
After 3/4 of an hour, depending
on the chimney flue, select the rate
required using the air inlet valve
[photo opposite].

Two factors determine the rate of the
fire: The quantity of wood loaded and
the quantity of combustion air.
Add normal loads (between 1.3 and
2.4 kg of wood/h). Over time you will
discover the ideal settings depending
on the chimney’s characteristics, the
room to be heated and your personal
preferences.
The weight of wood is a key factor,
as is the size of the logs : 2 small logs
will burn more quickly than a large
one of an equivalent weight because
the surface of wood exposed to the
flames is greater.
Controlling combustion
Your Stûv 30-up’s valve allows you to
control the quantity of air that feeds
combustion [photo 1]. Never close the
valve completely when the stove is in
operation.
How should you reload the stove?
Before reloading, half-open the stove’s
door for several seconds to allow
time for the smoke to disperse before
opening completely.
The best time to reload is when the
logs are producing only small, less
bright flames and are resting on a
large bed of embers.
To ensure that the new logs catch
light, they have to be heated until
they reach their combustion point.
It is the heat given off by the bed of
embers that heats up the new load.
Maintaining the fire
If you are too late in reloading, the
bed of embers will not be capable
of rapidly reheating a full load. You
should then add a partial load.
Adding a large load to a dying bed of
embers will cause :
the stove, glass door and smoke flue
to get dirty;
more pollution.
After reloading, we recommend
opening the valve to the maximum
(clockwise direction) for several
minutes [photos 1 & 2].
Use wood that is dry! This will keep
the glass door cleaner. Burning
wood of more than 16% humidity is
wasteful !

overheating, do not exceed the
hourly maximum wood consumption

Lighting the fire ! (continuation)
Please note
In certain atmospheric conditions (if
the outside temperature is higher than
inside), there will be a back draught
from the chimney.
Load on more paper and more
kindling to heat up the chimney flue
and to re-establish the draught.
Below a certain rate, combustion
is not optimal, there are greater
emissions and, in some cases, a risk of
the fire going out.

Do not put any more fuel onto the
fire.
Close the solid door.
Turn the valve control located under
the flap in an anti-clockwise direction
until it is shut off [Photo 1].
Check that the stove is properly
closed.
When the fire has gone out, close the
external air inlet using the rear valve
control [photo 2].
This way you will avoid letting the
whole house get cold. Push the rear
control back to close it.
The stove burns most efficiently when
it is closed. This is the stove’s normal
operational mode.
Using the stove in open fire mode
allows you to enjoy to the full all the
pleasures of an open fire (the smell
of burning wood, the crackling fire, a
barbecue…).
Bear in mind however that this mode
of operation consumes more air, more
wood and emits more fumes into the
atmosphere. Keep it for barbecues
and special occasions.
Avoid using the stove in open fire
mode when you cannot keep an eye
on it. Be careful of embers spitting: do
not burn coniferous wood, acacia or
robinia.

Notes
The food is held in place between the
2 grills. The grill can hold food up to
2.5 cm thick.
The food is cooked by heat radiated
from the stove. Make sure no flames
touch the food. Push the logs to the
back of the stove
When you are using the grill, certain
parts may become very hot.
Bear this in mind when handling any
of them.
The grill pan can go in the dishwasher
(but not the grills, nor the grill
supports, nor the cold grip).

Annual maintenance
Be careful !
Wait until the stove has cooled down
completely before embarking on
maintenance.
Maintenance of the stove
Clean with a dry rag. A paint spray
supplied with the stove means
you can retouch the paintwork if
necessary. When you do this, start
on a test surface to avoid spraying
solvent on the old paintwork.
The surface to be repainted must
be smooth, clean, dry and free
from grease. Please also read the
instructions on the paint spray.
Cleaning the glass door
Open the door to clean the inside of
the glass.
A cloth dampened with an ordinary
cleaning product dipped in cold ashes
will get the glass door really clean.
You can also use a scouring product
or a foam spray like those for cleaning
the glass doors of ovens. Avoid
getting it on the painted areas, the
seals, floor covering, etc. Dry the pane
thoroughly as smoke settles on greasy
residue. Finish, if necessary, with a
window-cleaning product.
Regular maintenance
Emptying out the ashes
Leave a bed of ashes in the bottom
of the stove; it still contains some fuel
and will aid combustion. But make
sure you empty out any excess ashes
that may obstruct the flow of fresh
air to the fire. Wait until the ashes
have cooled (use a shovel or special
vacuum cleaner for ashes) and put
them outside in a metal bucket until
they have cooled completely.
Quick cleaning of the chimney
flue
Stûv recommends the use of a dose
of a fulgent (product that breaks up
soot) after using the stove about
15times. Consult the instructions on
the product for use. Use a product
suitable for the type of chimney flue.
Be careful !
Before proceeding with the
maintenance, wait until the stove has
completely cooled down.
Do not forget, once a year, to :
sweep your chimney,
clean the drum rail (see following
page)
check the condition of the seals

Sweeping
Do the sweeping at least once a
year in accordance with local and
national regulations in force. Pass
on this information to the chimney
sweep. Before carrying out the actual
sweeping, Stûv recommends the use
of a dose of a fulgent (product that
breaks up soot).
Consult the instructions on the
product for use. Use a product
suitable for the type of chimney flue.
Dismantling the smoke deflectors
Open the stove door [photo1].
Push the deflector backwards and
upwards [photos 5 & 6].
Remove the axle lug from the notch
on the moveable deflector [photo7].
Pull the deflector lever [photo7]
forwards. Carefully swivel the smoke
deflector round and take it out of the
stove [photo8].

We recommend that you carry out
this task twice a year.
With a 10mm open-ended spanner
unscrew the scraper located under the
right side lateral panel [photo 1].
Open the flap [photo 2].
If you are still unable to clean, position
the drum in the glass door mode.
With one hand, push the drum
backwards and, with the other hand,
insert a flat screwdriver between the
base of the drum and the fixed part of
the stove [photo 3].
The scraper must then be screwed
into the empty threaded hole located
next to the Ø 26 mm hole. Insert
and screw the scraper (point to the
right and locking lug upwards) into
the gap created by the screwdriver.

Remove the blocking screwdriver.
Rotate the drum several times [photo
6 & 7]. It is more difficult to rotate
with the scraper inserted. Use both
hands to rotate it [photo 8].

Return to the “glass door” position
and put the blocking screwdriver back
between the drum and the fixed part
of the stove [photo 1]. Unscrew and
remove the scraper [photo 2]. Remove
the screwdriver [photo 3].
Close the flap again [photo 4].
Put the scraper away under the panel.
Check the condition of the seals
2 kinds of seals can be checked: the
seals on all the doors and the seal
around the drum.
The door seals
To make this easier, lift off the upper
plate of the stove [photo 1].
Visual check.
Even if they seem to be in good
condition, the seals can be loose
and no longer provide sufficient
airtightness; to check this, wedge a
strip of paper a few centimetres wide
into the door [photos 2 & 3]; it should
stay wedged in place. Repeat the
action all around the door.
If this is not the case, have the seal
replaced.
The drum seals
Open the flap
Open the stove door [photo 4].
Release the drum; to do this, turn it a
few centimetres to the right [photo 5].
Wedge a strip of paper between the
seal on the fixed part of the stove
and the seal on the drum [photo 6].
To return the drum to its starting
position, make an exception by
turning it to the left. Check if the
strip of paper is held in place by the
compression of the seal.

Close the door and the flap again.

Only duly completed forms
will be valid.
You will then receive your
Stûv warranty certificate,

document in a safe place. In
the event of a problem with
your stove, please contact
your dealer. You should
show them this certificate for
the commercial warranty to
be effective.
This stove has been designed to
give you maximum comfort, output
and safety. Every care has been
taken during the manufacturing
process, using quality materials and
components so that you can enjoy it
for many years to come.
If, despite our best efforts, a fault
should occur, we undertake to
resolve it.
If you complete the guarantee
form within 30 days, Stûv will offer
you an extension to the statutory
warranty.
Stûv extended warranty
Stûv’s extended warranty affects
any user of a Stûv appliance (end
purchaser). It takes effect on the
date of the original sales invoice
from the seller to the buyer for new
stoves (which have not been subject
to being exhibited or used). For
second-hand stoves, it will run from
the date of the original Stûv sales
invoice to the seller.
Duration of the guarantee
The statutory warranty on the
components covered is 2 years.
The extended warranty period is
years on the body of the stove
years on the electrical and
electronic components (fan,
thermostat, switch, wiring,
etc.)

(base grate, door mechanism,
hinges, pulleys, runners,
clasps,...)
The right to benefit from extension
of the guarantee is subject to
adherence to the applicable
conditions and the accuracy of the
information provided to Stûv.
Stûv stoves are guaranteed

manufacturing faults,
faults with the paintwork on the
visible external parts of the stove
The statutory warranty and
extended warranty do not cover:
the components subject to wear
and tear (e.g. ash removal grille,
vermiculite, seals, flame modeller,
control key) which have to be
replaced from time to time in
normal usage,
the glass,
damage caused to the stove or
operational faults due to :
> installation which does not
comply with good practice
guidelines and the installation
instructions and with national
and regional regulations in
force,
> abnormal usage which does
not comply with the directions
for use instructions,
> a lack of maintenance,
> external factors, such as
flooding, lightning, fire...
> local conditions such as
draught problems or faults
caused by defective ducts.
– damage caused by :
> faulty installation,
> overheating,
> the use of inappropriate fuel.
The guarantee is restricted to the
exchange of components recognized
as defective excluding replacement,
compensation and interest costs.
The replacement components
supplied under the guarantee are
guaranteed for the remainder of the
guarantee period.
