n virtually all market segments, companies are demanding new technologies to upgrade current mobile eld service
processes. Mobile printing solutions are an important part of meeting these evolving demands.
Driving the adoption of mobile printers is the overarching goal of automating processes that were previously accomplished
manually. Achieving this goal has two principal benets to the user: one, improving the internal performance of the
organization (i.e., improving the productivity, efciency, and accuracy of eld service personnel in executing their work),
and two, achieving higher levels of customer service and satisfaction. Both of these accrue to the bottom line.
All eld operations involve some type of documentation—invoices, receipts, work orders, service reminders, onsite
payments, or reports—and all these can be streamlined and made signicantly more efcient through the use of mobile
data capture and printing solutions.
The automation of eld service applications represents a persuasive value proposition to the user. According to Aberdeen
Group, companies that have successfully implemented mobile eld service applications have seen sizeable benets in
worker productivity (+19 percent), customer retention (+17 percent), and service revenues (+18 percent).
1
Any reduction
in non-service-oriented processes can save time at each call, which represents an increased number of productive service
calls per day. The productivity and subsequent cash ow of many service organizations can be directly correlated to
the number of service calls made. Making eld service personnel more efcient and productive means faster and better
service to the customer while driving throughput and subsequent revenues to the business.
Key to the smooth implementation and operation of mobile printing processes are tools that eld service personnel nd
easy to use and maintain. Reliability in difcult and often widely varying environments is also paramount. O’Neils
introduction of its PrintPAD family of integrated printing systems takes mobile printing to new levels of exibility,
functionality, ease of use, and reliable performance in the eld.

Carry, Charge, and Communicate
PrintPAD portable thermal printers work in the most rugged
environments to enable the hardcopy backup of digital information
and signature printing, as well as the generation of receipts,
tickets, and labels for a variety of applications.
The sleek, compact design of the PrintPAD allows users
to conveniently and securely carry their mobile computer,
communicate with the printer, and charge both the computer and
printer from a single source—all in one integrated package. It
reduces the number of parts a eld service technician needs to
manage; instead of needing to have charging solutions for each
device involved in the printing process (or multiple handheld
balancing solutions for all devices), you simply have a printer and
computer in an integrated unit that you carry which provides you
easy access to everything you need.
With the PrintPAD, there’s no need to worry about the
communications link between the printer and computer. The
system provides ample security so that the elements aren’t
conned or difcult to access, yet aren’t so cumbersome that they
can’t be separated when needed. Charging the units is simple: just
drop the elements into a loading cradle, and the PrintPAD and
handheld terminal will automatically charge.
This innovation, another example of O’Neil’s commitment to continuous product improvement, is the latest of a long line
of O’Neil technological innovations in the mobile printing industry. These include:
The rst wearable belt-attached printer
The rst portable printer incorporating ash memory
The rst portable wireless lrDA compatible printer
The rst portable printer incorporating “C” fold paper
The rst portable printer with an integrated insertion magnetic stripe reader
The rst portable printer with an integrated insertion smart card reader
The rst portable printer featuring an unbreakable polyethylene case
The rst portable wireless printer with an 802.11b PCMCIA card
The PrintPAD continues O’Neil’s unparalleled reputation for product reliability. This is critical in terms of asset
protection, but also because equipment failure essentially disables operations in the eld. On this parameter, O’Neil’s
leadership in reliability is well established within the industry. Bob Travatello, Chief Information Ofcer of propane
provider Blue Rhino, Inc, puts it this way: “Every one of the original O’Neil printers deployed six years ago is still out in
the eld. We’ve added units because we are growing, but we’ve never replaced any. That’s quite a testament.”
Wide Range of Applications
PrintPAD is ideally suited for companies that can improve processes by leveraging the speed, convenience, and accuracy
of its advanced mobile printing technology for signicant increases in productivity and lower labor costs. Prominent
among market segments who can benet from this technology are the following:
PRINTPAD
PrintPAD 7900
PrintPAD 9000
PrintPAD CN3
PrintPAD MC70/75
Food and Beverage Sales
PrintPAD can generate up to 2,240 6” (152 mm) receipts with crisp graphics and logos. This is vital in the food and
beverage industry because of the importance of supporting the brand and presenting it appropriately to the end user. In this
market, it is critical to have a technology that can support graphics with the resolution required to properly present logos
and segment market data.
Route Accounting and Direct Store Delivery (DSD)
Before automated processing, direct store delivery of goods entailed the
employee running the route to each account—and to an individual or
individuals—to determine what needed replenishment, manually entering
that on an invoice, going to the truck to see what could be lled at that
time, and leaving a copy of items delivered and to be delivered with the
retail or warehouse personnel. This was a time-consuming, complicated,
and inefcient process. With the PrintPAD digital solution, the DSD staff
gets real-time information by using a handheld device to swipe shelf
items that need to be stocked. By the time they’ve gone back to the truck
and returned to the point of sale, they have a receipt printed and validated
for the appropriate party to sign off on. There’s no data entry involved—
all the information is captured in the handheld terminal that answers all
stocking queries and provides invoicing in real time, down to the minute
of delivery.
Field Service
PrintPAD simplies and speeds invoice preparation, prints work summary reports at the point-of-service, accepts payment
on delivery via credit card, issues receipts, and records and prints high-resolution signatures for proof of delivery or
payment.
Law Enforcement
Municipalities lose revenue when law enforcement writes tickets that prove to
be illegible or unclear about what transpired to warrant the ticket. PrintPAD
makes it simple for law enforcement to capture what has transpired in detail,
input it simply and efciently, deliver the citation to the offender, and secure
clear documentation to protect downstream revenues.
Rugged Mobile Point-of-Sale
PrintPAD enables the user to scan items, take credit card payment, and issue receipts anywhere on premises with an
optional magnetic stripe card reader. According to Frost & Sullivan, the drive to enhance the consumers shopping
experience is creating greater demand for sophisticated printers, and mobile printers in particular are likely to offer an
opportunity to increase revenues signicantly.2
Transportation and Logistics
PrintPAD can print compliance shipping and inventory labels, create and issue tickets and boarding passes, provide mobile
passenger check-in and luggage check, process transactions, and issue receipts for in-transit shopping. In this application,
as in others, PrintPAD can print high-resolution signatures for proof of delivery.

Notes from the Field
Though the PrintPAD has only been in the market for a relatively short time, reports of its effectiveness are quickly
coming to light.
A Fresh Solution
Fresno, Calif.-based Producers Dairy (Producers) has served
the western United States for more than 75 years. The company
supplies fresh dairy products that distribution personnel deliver
directly to clients across this vast region.
Operating from 10 locations throughout California, Producers
has more than 2,500 customers. To satisfy customer expec-
tations, the company began using handheld computers and
portable printers about a decade ago. Since the handhelds had a
lifespan of only two to three years, Producers spent in excess
of $50,000 every cycle to replace the equipment. Added to this,
the handhelds had a daily failure rate of nearly 10 percent, attributed to the non-rugged nature of the devices. The unhappy
result: a loss of valuable time waiting for replacements, and dissatised customers unable to pay or obtain a receipt at the
point of sale.
Along with the aging handhelds, Producers used a portable dot matrix printer. These were mounted in dairy trucks, and
drivers had to go back and forth from the delivery site to the truck when printing an invoice or receipt. Further, the printers
required 8.5” x 11” paper and a printer ribbon, which combined, cost the dairy $40,000 annually. Using this size paper for
an invoice with one or two items was grossly wasteful, and as the handhelds didn’t allow for electronic signatures, hard
copies were needed for every receipt. These, of course, had to be led. When receipts began consuming too much space,
they were scanned for electronic storage. With more than 2,500 customers, this was a labor intensive activity.
Notied in January 2007 that its handheld devices were being discontinued, Producers turned to VAR Ross Computer
Systems to search for a new route delivery solution. Ross helped Producers identify what products in the market would
be applicable; they trimmed the list to three vendors before a nal solution was selected.
Producers chose Motorola MC70 handheld mobile computers and O’Neil
PrintPADs - Ross’ recommendation. The computers and printers are
integrated via a wireless Bluetooth connection. The handheld was chosen
because it has a large touch screen, is light and easy to carry, and yet is
highly durable. The rugged and reliable PrintPADs are thermal, compact,
and portable—eliminating the need for large paper and ribbons, and allow-
ing drivers to carry the integrated unit onto the site for electronic signature
and immediate printing of receipts.
The solution has proved highly efcient and cost effective. It allows Pro-
ducers to present properly calculated invoices, accept payment, and offer
a receipt at the point of sale. They are saving more than $40,000 a year in
paper and ribbon costs, as well as $15,000 annually in labor time formerly
used to scan receipts. According to Frank Sitwell, director of administration
at Producers Dairy, the company expects payback on the new route de-
livery system in less than two years. Moreover, the system is empowering
Producers to deliver what Sitwell calls “the things our customers expect us
to provide.”

The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread
Billerica, Mass.-based National Datacomputer, Inc. (NDI) specializes in
creating DSD solutions for the food and beverage industry. Specically, the
integrator sells O’Neill mobile printers and Motorola handheld mobile
computers running Route Rider LE software to companies delivering soda,
beer, coffee, tea, water, bread, and snacks.
When it comes to the mobile printing aspect of its solutions, NDI relies ex-
clusively on O’Neil printers. A recent solution for a large nationwide baking
company highlights the reasons why.
The customers drivers deliver bread to multi-location supermarket aisles and
need to have the freedom to work hands-free, but also need quick and easy
access to a mobile computer and printer. NDI recommended the O’Neil
PrintPAD. The unit is a combination of an O’Neil 4” thermal printer mounted
in a rugged case and an embedded communications charging cradle designed for the Motorola MC 9094 handheld
computer. The unit has an integrated carry strap and optional shoulder strap. Also optional is an integrated magnetic
stripe reader.
“The customer purchased 275 Motorola handhelds and O’Neil PrintPADs for its route drivers,” says Steve Bergmann,
director of product marketing for NDI. He adds that in NDI’s 20-year history of selling O’Neil products, the printers have
failed less than 1 percent of the time. “It’s a great product for us to sell, because we consider it to be a maintenance-free
product,” says Bergmann. “When we created our support program, we didn’t spend time troubleshooting or worrying
about the reliability of the O’Neil PrintPADs.”
PrintPAD Features and Specifications
The PrintPAD is the most exible integrated printing system on the market, compatible with Motorola (MC90XX-S,
MC70 and MC75 Series), Honeywell (Dolphin 7900), and Intermec (CN3 and CN3e) handheld computers.
All PrintPADs are tested rigorously for ruggedness and reliability. Unlike some of the new PrintPAD-type devices being
offered by other companies, O’Neil offers a proven design with years of product renement. It’s smaller, lighter and the
only PrintPAD-type device with a published 6-foot drop specication. It’s easy to see why O’Neil is also the only
company to include a two year standard warranty with every PrintPAD.
