1 Introduction
The Vetus battery splitter provides automatic charge current distribution of the al-
ternator and/or battery charger and load isolation of the batteries.
This is achieved because the diodes allow the current only to ow from the alterna-
tor to each individual battery and not the other way around. Discharging a higher
charged battery into a lower charged battery is therefore impossible.
By applying a dierent technology to that universally used for isolator diodes, the
voltage drop of the Vetus battery splitter is signicant lower.
In comparison, an isolator diode usually suers from a voltage drop of 0.7 Volt. This
means that the charging voltage of the batteries will be 0.7 Volt lower than the
output voltage of the alternator. The batteries will never be fully charged with this
lower charging voltage. A battery which is always being charged up to less than
100% will have a very short service life! Compensation of the alternators charging
voltage is required to charge the batteries up to 100%. This required charging volt-
age compensation is with certain alternators not easily achieved.
Compensation for the charging voltage of the alternator, and a battery charger if
installed, is NOT required in case of the Vetus battery splitter.
The Vetus battery splitter is suitable for negative ground systems and batteries of
the same nominal voltage either of 12 Volt or 24 Volt.
1.1 The maximum current
The battery splitter can be used for a continuous current up to a maximum of 150
Amps. Make sure that the maximum total current of alternator and battery charger,
if they supply current simultaneously, does not exceed the maximum specied cur-
rent.
In view of the high currents which may occur over a long period of time take ex-
treme care with both the cables and the connections.

2 Installation
2.1 Location of the battery splitter
Choose a dry place well away from any heat source. Position the battery splitter as
central as possible between the batteries, the alternator and the battery charger.
Do not place the battery splitter immediately above a battery; sulphur fumes from
the battery can damage the electronic components.

If the battery selector switch is placed in position ‘BOTH’ the batteries are connected
in parallel and isolator function of the diode splitter is by-passed.

Use cable with sucient cross-section to connect the battery splitter. Select a wire
cross-section taking into account the maximum current which can be supplied by
alternator and/or battery charger.

Warning
Heavy currents through wiring that is too thin, or resistance caused by bad connec-
tions, can generate excessive heat and could cause a re.
Use good quality interconnection components.
Use matching cable terminals and a suitable crimping tool.
It is very important that the ring of the cable terminal corresponds with the M8
terminal of the battery splitter. If a cable terminal with an oversize ring is used, the
contact surface will be reduced substantially, as a result the terminals, due to con-
tact resistance, can be overheated.
(Generally the battery splitter will carry high currents if a high load is applied to the
battery (bow propeller, anchor windlass, inverter) while at the same time the alter-
nator and/or battery charger supplies current)
2.3 Function of the terminals
B+ ALTERNATOR
- Connect to the B+ terminal of the alternator.
- Where a battery charger is installed then also connect the battery charger plus
(+) to this terminal.
Instead of ‘B+’ one of the following markings may be shown: B+51, 51, B+30, B, BAT
or 30.
Normally the B+ terminal of the alternator is connected to that plus (+) terminal of
the starter relay where also the plus cable of the starter battery is connected.

Connect the cable to the plus (+) terminal of the respective battery.
B —
Connect a cable from this terminal to the minus terminal (ground) of the ship’s
power supply system.
A wire cross-section of 2.5 mm
2
(AWG 14) is sucient for this interconnection.
It is important that the minus terminals of all batteries are interconnected.
Also for a ship with a steel hull it is recommended to use cables for all minus con-
nections instead of using the ship’s hull. That does not alter the fact that in most
cases the minus terminal is or even must be grounded at one (1) point (connected
to the hull).
In cases where the ships hull is used as a conductor this may result in corrosion. In
addition there may occur some dierence in the voltage at the minus terminals of
the various consumers, which may result in malfunction of electronic equipment.
2.4 Connection of battery charger
A battery charger can be connected directly in parallel to the alternator; see ‘Func-
tion of the terminals, B+ ALTERNATOR’.
If the battery splitter is used in combination with certain types of battery chargers
the problem may arise that every time the power supply (230 Volt) has been inter-
rupted the charger must be switched on again.
A battery charger with built-in battery splitter gives the possibility to charge 3 bat-
teries without the use of an extra battery splitter.
In such a case use the battery splitter only for the charge current of the alternator.

4 Testing and trouble shooting
In case of doubt about the correct operation of the battery splitter the following
test can be carried out using a simple multimeter or voltmeter.
First check if wiring is connected as indicated in the diagrams and that the minus
terminals of all batteries are interconnected.
Measure the voltages as indicated in the diagrams on page 50 and 51.
(1) If the nominal battery voltage is being measured on the loose wire encl, while
the engine is stopped and the battery charger is switched o, then the B+ ter-
minal of the alternator is still directly connected to the + terminal of the starter
relay. See also chapter ‘Installation - Function of the terminals.
Remove the connection from alternator B+ to starter relay.
(2) If the voltage at all terminals is about the same but the voltage does not in-
crease to the desired value then the charge voltage of the alternator or battery
charger is set incorrectly.
In the case of fully discharged batteries it may take some time before the
charge voltage will increase.
Note: The battery voltage will never be higher than the voltage at the
B+ALTERNATOR terminal of the battery splitter!
(3) If the alternator warning light remains on after the engine has been started but
still operating at idle speed, the alternator isn’t charging. Therefore, increase for
a short period of time the rpm of the engine.
If the alternator doesn’t charge any more after installation of the battery splitter
then check the terminal for the exciting current.
This terminal must be connected via the key-switch and an alternator warning
light to the battery and not to the B+ of the alternator. See drawing at page 47.
Note: It is possible that after installation of the battery splitter the engine con-
trol panel or other equipment does not function (properly).
The power supply for engine panel or equipment in such a case is directly con-
nected to the B+ terminal of the alternator. This is incorrect installation. Con-
nect the supply directly to the battery or to a distribution rail for the consum-
ers.
4.1 LED-Indicator
When DC power is available from the battery charger or the alternator, the green
LED on top of the battery splitter illuminates.
