1 INTRODUCTION

SmartCell ZX Administrator is a Windows application that manages SmartCell ZX ATM switches. It supports the

following applications:

• Switch management

• Emulated Local Area Network (ELAN) management

• Connection management

• Alarm management

• Switch discovery

You can use SmartCell ZX Administrator to perform most of the tasks that you can do with the SmartCell

6A000/ZX-250 console interface. The tasks that you cannot perform with SmartCell ZX Administrator are debugging

and tracing: You cannot control the console debugging and tracing options.

With SmartCell ZX Administrator, you can perform the following tasks that are not available from the console

interface:

• Use the graphical user interface

• Manage all switches from one console

• Perform transactions across multiple switches (for example, create an ELAN when the servers are

not co-located

• Perform transactions with drag and drop

This manual contains the information you need to get started with the application. After installation, refer to the online

help for descriptions of how to use the product.

1.1 AUDIENCE

SmartCell ZX Administrator is designed for network administrators and managers. To use this product effectively, you

should know how to install and use Windows applications. You also should understand networking in general and ATM

in particular. Refer to the SmartCell 6A000 User Guide and SmartCell ZX-250 User Guide for information about how

the switch works.

1.2 CONTENT

Chapter 2, "Installation," tells how to install the application on Windows NT 4.0, Windows NT 3.51, and Windows 95.

Chapter 3, "Getting Started," tells how to do the following tasks:

• Start the application the first time

• Start the application after the first time

• Add a user

• Access online help

• Uninstall the application

Chapter 4, "ATM Acronyms," spells out the ATM acronyms used on the SmartCell ZX Administrator screens.

Appendix A, "Technical Support," gives instructions for contacting Cabletron by telephone, fax, electronic mail, and

the World Wide Web.

1.3 CONVENTIONS

Characters that you type appear in Courier boldface type.

Example: Enter

a:\setup.exe

means that you should type "a:\setup.exe" and then press the Enter key.

Variables for which you supply a value appear in angle brackets (<>). Replace the brackets and the variable name with

the appropriate value.

Example:

<path>

means that you should replace "<path>" with the location of a file like "c:\documents\myfile"

1.4 RELATED MANUALS

The SmartCell 6A000/ZX-250 Reference Manual describes the console commands.

The SmartCell ZX-250 User Guide and SmartCell 6A000 User Guide tell how to install, configure, use and

troubleshoot the switch.

You can install SmartCell ZX Administrator on a PC running Windows NT 4.0, Windows NT 3.51, or Windows 95.

You can install the software from the diskette drive (drive a:) on your PC or from a server on your network.

After you read this chapter, you will be able to install the application on the following platforms:

• Windows NT 4.0

• Windows NT 3.51

• Windows 95

2.1 HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

Before you install SmartCell ZX Administrator, verify that your PC has the following hardware:

• Pentium 133 or faster processor

• 20 MB disk space

• 32 MB RAM

• Monitor with resolution of at least 800 x 600 resolution

• IP network connection to the switch you manage

2.2 INSTALLING SMARTCELL ZX ADMINISTRATOR

ON WINDOWS NT 4.0

2.2.1 Software Requirements

Before you install SmartCell ZX Administrator, verify that the Windows NT 4.0 operating system is installed on your

PC.

2.2.2 Installation Steps

Follow these steps to install SmartCell ZX Administrator.

1. If you are using diskettes, make backup copies of the SmartCell ZX Administrator diskettes. Put the

original diskettes in a safe place; use them if your backup copies become unusable. Use your backup

copies to complete the installation procedure.

2. Load Disk1 into drive a or note the network <path> to the directory that contains the SmartCell ZX

Administrator files. The term <path> is the location of the files on your server.

3. Click Start then click Run.

5. The Software License Agreement dialog box appears. Follow the instructions on the screen and click

Yes to proceed.

6. The Welcome dialog box appears. Read the instructions and click Next to proceed.

7. The Choose Destination Location screen appears. Follow the instructions on the screen and click

Next. Setup performs the following tasks:

- Copies several files to c:\ZXAdmin or to the destination you selected

- Creates a program group called SmartCell ZX Network Management Tools (Common)

- Creates icons in the group for

SmartCell ZX Administrator–starts the application

Online Help–starts the online help

Readme–displays release notes

UnInstall SmartCell ZX Administrator–removes the application from your PC

8. The Setup Complete dialog box appears. Read the message and click Finish.

9. The Information dialog box appears. Click OK.

10. Log off and log on before using SmartCell ZX Administrator.

3 GETTING STARTED

Most of the instructions for using SmartCell ZX Administrator appear in the online help. This chapter describes a few

tasks that you need to know about as you begin to use the application.

After you read this chapter, you will be able to perform the following tasks:

• Starting SmartCell ZX Administrator the first time

• Starting SmartCell ZX Administrator after the first time

• Adding a user

• Accessing online help

• Uninstalling SmartCell ZX Administrator

3.1 STARTING SMARTCELL ZX ADMINISTRATOR

THE FIRST TIME

When you use SmartCell ZX Administrator for the first time, you should change the default passwords to prevent

unauthorized access to the application. The application arrives with two user accounts set up, as described in Table 3-1.

1. In the SmartCell ZX Network Management Tools (Common) program group, double click on the

icon labeled SmartCell ZX Administrator. The SmartCell ZX Administrator Login dialog box

appears.

2. Enter the default user name, admin. The user name is case sensitive.

3. Enter the default password, admin, and click the OK button or press Enter. The password is case

sensitive.

4. The SmartCell ZX Administrator window appears. On the Applications menu, select User

Management.

3.2 CHANGING PASSWORDS

1. The User Account Management dialog box appears. Follow steps 2-8 to change the admin and guest

passwords.

2. In the List of Users, select admin.

3. In the User Profile, type your new password in the Password field, and type it again in the Confirm

Password field.

4. Click the Update Profile button.

5. In the List of Users, select guest.

6. In the User Profile, type your new password in the Password field, and type it again in the Confirm

Password field.

7. Click the Update Profile button.

8. Click the Close button to return to the SmartCell ZX Administrator window. You are ready to use

the application to manage your switch.

3.3 STARTING SMARTCELL ZX ADMINISTRATOR

AFTER THE FIRST TIME

After you have started SmartCell ZX Administrator the first time and changed the default passwords, you log in to the

application just as you would any Windows program. The following steps describe the procedure:

1. In the SmartCell ZX Network Management Tools (Common) program group, double click the icon

labeled SmartCell ZX Administrator. The SmartCell ZX Administrator Login dialog box appears.

2. Enter your user name and press the Tab key. The user name is case sensitive.

3. Enter your password and click the OK button. The password is case sensitive. The SmartCell ZX

Administrator window appears. You are ready to use the application to manage your switch.

3.4 ADDING A USER

1. Log in using a user name whose Access Level is set to Administrator.

2. The SmartCell ZX Administrator window appears. On the Applications menu, select User

Management.

3. The User Account Management dialog box appears. In the User Profile, enter the new user name in

the Name field.

4. Select the Access Level with the pull-down menu.

5. Use the Tab key to move from field to field. The Full Name and Description are optional.

6. Enter the password in the Password field, press Tab, and enter the password again in the Confirm

Password field.

7. Click the Add Acct button.

8. Click the Close button to return to the main window.

3.5 ACCESSING ONLINE HELP

1. From the Help menu, select SmartCell ZX Administrator Help Topics.

2. The Help Topics dialog box appears. You have three options for viewing online help:

- Click the Contents tab to show the Table of Contents of the online help. Click on the topic you

wish to read about.

- Click the Index tab to select from an alphabetical list of help topics.

- Click the Find tab to search for a particular topic.

3.6 UNINSTALLING SMARTCELL ZX

ADMINISTRATOR

1. In the SmartCell ZX Network Management Tools (Common) program group, double click UnInstall

SmartCell ZX Administrator.

2. The Confirm File Deletion dialog box appears. Click the Yes button.

3. The Remove Programs From Your Computer dialog box appears. Click the OK button. The uninstall

procedure is complete.

Your configuration database files remain on the disk. You can install the same or a different version of SmartCell ZX

Administrator. The newly installed application will find your database.

A.5 WARRANTY INFORMATION

A.5.1 Hardware Warranty

Cabletron warrants its products against defects in the physical product for one year from the date of receipt by the end

user (as shown by Proof of Purchase). A product that is determined to be defective should be returned to the place of

purchase. For more detailed warranty information, consult the Product Warranty Statement received with your product.

A.5.2 Software Warranty

Cabletron software products carry a 90-day software warranty. During this period, customers may receive updates and

patches for verified, reported software issues.

A.6 REPAIR SERVICES

Cabletron offers an out-of-warranty repair service at our Santa Clara Repair Facility. Products returned for repair will

be repaired and returned within 5 working days. A product sent to Cabletron Systems, Inc. for repair must first be

assigned a Return Material Authorization (RMA) number. A product sent to Cabletron Systems, Inc., without an RMA

number displayed outside the box will be returned to the sender unopened, at the sender's expense.

To obtain an RMA number, contact the Cabletron Technical Support. When you call for an RMA number, your support

representative will spend a few minutes with you, making sure the board is defective. Once they confirm the board is

defective, they will assign an RMA number. Payment, shipping instructions, and turnaround time will be confirmed

when the RMA number is assigned.
