2. Preparation
a) While edging, always wear eye and ear protection, substantial
foot wear, and long trousers.
b) Thoroughly inspect the surface where the equipment is to be
used and remove all stones, sticks, wires, bones and other
foreign objects.
c) WARNING: Petrol is highly flammable.
Take the following precautions:
1. Store fuel in containers specifically designed for this
purpose.
2. Refuel outdoors only and do not smoke while
refuelling.
3. Add fuel before starting the engine. Never remove the
cap of the fuel tank or add petrol while the engine is
running or when the engine is hot.
4. Avoid spillage: if petrol is spilled, do not attempt to
start the engine but move the machine away from
the area of spillage and avoid creating any source of
ignition until petrol vapors have dissipated.
5. Tighten all fuel tank and container caps securely.
d) Replace faulty silencers.
e) Before using, always visually inspect to see that the blade is
not worn or damaged. Replace worn or damaged blades to
preserve balance.
f) Use only manufacturer-recommended replacement parts and
accessories.
3. Operation
a) Do not operate the engine in a confined space where
dangerous carbon monoxide fumes can collect. Breathing
exhaust fumes can be fatal.
b) Edge only in daylight or in good artificial light.
c) Always be sure of your footing on slopes.
d) Walk, never run.
e) Use extreme caution when reversing or pulling the edger
toward you.
f) Make sure the blade has stopped before crossing surfaces
other than grass and when transporting the edger to and from
the area to be edged.
g) Never operate the edger with defective, missing or incorrectly
fitted guards.
h) Do not change the engine governor settings or overspeed the
engine.
i) Start the engine or switch on the motor carefully according to
instructions and with feet well away from the blade(s).
j) Do not tilt when starting the engine or switching on the motor,
unless the edger has to be tilted for starting. In this case, do
not tilt it more than absolutely necessary and lift only the part
which is away from the operator.
k) Do not start the engine when a bystander is standing in front of
the blade(s).
l) Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts.
m) Always switch off the electric motor and disconnect from main
or stop the fuel powered engine:
1. before clearing blockages;
2. before checking, cleaning or working on the blade(s);
3. after striking a foreign object: inspect the blade(s)
for damage and make repairs before restarting and
operating the edger;
4. if edger starts to vibrate abnormally (check
immediately).
n) Stop the engine:
1. whenever you leave the edger;
2. before refuelling.
o) Reduce the throttle setting during engine run-out and, if the
engine is provided with a shut-off valve, turn the fuel off at the
conclusion of edging.
4. Maintenance and storage
a) Keep all nuts, bolts and screws tight to be sure the equipment
is in safe working condition.
b) Never store the equipment with petrol in the tank inside a
building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark.
c) Allow the engine to cool before storing in any enclosure.
d) To reduce the fire hazard, keep the engine, silencer, battery
compartment, and petrol storage area free of grass, leaves or
excessive grease.
e) Replace worn or damaged parts.
f) If the fuel tank has to be drained, do this outdoors.
g) Do not attempt to repair the machine unless you are competent
to do so.
h) Use only manufacturer-recommended replacement parts and
accessories.
Assembling the Edger
Please refer to the following sections when preparing the edger for
its first use.
Fitting the handle
Preparing the Engine
FITTING THE HANDLE
In some cases the handle may be completely detached from the
edger body although the upper handle may be connected by the
OPC Stop Ignition wires. Carefully remove the edger and handles
from the box together to avoid damaging the OPC Stop Ignition
wires.
Fit the two long bolts through the holes in the lower handle from the
inside with the round heads snug against the tube. Fit the holes in
the upper handle over the two long bolts. Attach the plastic knob to
the outside of the lower handle bolt as shown below and tighten by
hand until the upper handle is locked in position.
Preparing the Engine
PLEASE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE ENGINE
MANUFACTURERS ENGINE OWNER’S MANUAL PRIOR TO
OPERATING THE EDGER.
DO NOT START your four stroke engine
before making sure that it has been filled
with the right amount of the correct grade
of oil. See engine instruction book for
details.

OIL
Four stroke (cycle) engines are shipped without oil. Place the edger
on a level position, unscrew the ‘OIL FILL’ cap and slowly pour oil
into the sump. Fill to the full mark on the dipstick. The capacity is
approximately 600 ml. Use SAE 30 engine oil. After checking the
oil level, and before running the engine, screw the dipstick firmly in
place.
Checking the oil level if the engine is not fitted with a dip stick.
CHANGING THE ENGINE OIL
FOUR STROKE ENGINES should be checked for oil level every 8
hours running (or daily), and the oil should be drained and replaced
after every 50 hours of use.
Fuel
PETROL VAPOUR IS HIGHLY FLAMMABLE
AND EXPLOSIVE. HANDLE WITH EXTREME
CARE. STORE IN AN APPROVED CONTAIN-
ER. DO NOT FILL TANK WHEN ENGINE IS
RUNNING OR IS STILL HOT. DO NOT ALLOW
OPEN FLAME, MATCHES OR SMOKING
NEARBY. FILL TANK OUTDOORS IN A WELL
VENTILATED AREA. WIPE AWAY ANY SPILLS
AND MOVE THE MOWER AWAY FROM ANY
PETROL FUMES BEFORE STARTING
ENGINE.
WARNING
If a blue plug is fitted beneath the petrol filler cap
it must be discarded. It is for transportation pur-
poses only.
If a blue plug is fitted beneath the petrol filler cap
it must be discarded. It is for transportation pur-
poses only.
CAUTION
For two stroke engines fuel ratio, refer to engine instruction book.
When filling the fuel tank, always leave an air space of about 5mm
to allow for expansion of the fuel.
ENGINE
Regular attention to a few simple items will ensure long and trouble-
free service from your mower. Carry out the regular maintenance
described in the engine manual, and check the engine mounting
bolts regularly to be sure they are tight.
NOTE: THE ENGINE IS WARRANTED BY THE ENGINE
MANUFACTURER AND NOT MASPORT. YOUR SPECIALIST
MASPORT SERVICE DEALER CAN ASSIST WITH ENGINE
RELATED WARRANTY MATTERS.
Before making any adjustments to your edger
make sure that the engine is turned off and that
the blade has STOPPED ROTATING. Always
disconnect the spark plug wire and make sure it
cannot accidentally contact the spark plug before
touching anything under the edger housing.
WARNING
Starting the Engine
For more detail description refer to the Engine Owner’s Manual
provided.
1. Make sure the isolator switch on the left hand side of the
engine is turned on.
2. Ensure the blade is clear of the ground. Check the height
adjuster is at the highest setting.
3. Turn the petrol tap on.
OPC Bail
NOTE: This edger is fitted with an Operator Presence control
(OPC) bail at the top of the handle. This must be squeezed against
the handlebar before starting the engine. The engine will stop
immediately when the bail is released.
Some controls have symbols instead of words. On these,
means CHOKE,
means FAST,
means SLOW,
means STOP.
If your engine control does not have the word CHOKE or the choke
symbol
you have a Pulsa Prime engine. (See RUNNING THE
ENGINE, MANUAL START MODELS).

MANUAL START MODELS. If the engine has not been running
recently, or you have cold starting problems, set the engine
control to the CHOKE position. Refer engine owner’s manual.
Grasp the starter grip, pull slowly until a resistance is felt and then
pull forcefully to prevent kick-back. Repeat until the engine starts.
Do not pull the cord with a jerk or release it until fully rewound.—
When the engine starts and has warmed up for a short time,
move the control to the desired speed. Should the engine not start
due to ‘flooding’, move the control to SLOW and pull the starter six
times to clear the flooding.
HINTS FOR EASY STARTING
1. Stand edger on firm ground.
2. Set the height setting to the highest setting.
3. Start a warm engine with the control in the SLOW
position.
4. Keep the edger clean underneath.
HARD STARTING CHECK LIST
Look for these faults:-
FUEL 1. Insufficient fuel in tank.
2. Fuel tap shut off.
3. Stale fuel.
4. Water or dirt in fuel.
5. Blocked air vent in fuel tank cap.
IGNITION 1. Loose spark plug wire.
2. Dirty spark plug electrodes.
3. Incorrect spark plug gap.
4. Incorrect spark plug type.
OTHER 1. Choked air filter (Dirt or oil).
2. Engine control cable mis-adjusted.
3. Cutting blade obstructed.
Stopping
Move the engine control to stop.
OPC Bail
OPERATOR PRESENCE CONTROL (OPC) BAIL
This is a safety feature which stops the engine quickly if the
operator releases their grip on the handle. To start the engine, you
must move the bail back and hold it against the handlebar.
If the machine run/brake mechanism is not
adjusted correctly or is damaged the blade
could continue to rotate after the OPC arm
is released. In this situation, do not use the
edger. Contact your local servicing
specialist.
WARNING
After Use
CLEANING
DO NOT HOSE THE ENGINE, as water can
damage the air cleaner and the ignition system.
REFER TO ENGINE INSTRUCTION BOOK
MAINTENANCE SECTION BEFORE TILTING
EDGER. STORE YOUR EDGER ON ITS
WHEELS, not its side.
CAUTION
Cut Depth Control
The single point cut height control adjusts the front wheels only.
To operate, steady the edger by grasping the handle with one
hand, pull the lever outwards from the slots with the other hand
and move it to the desired setting.
Blades
DAMAGED BLADES ARE MAJOR HAZARDS.
Check the blade mounting shaft and nut at frequent intervals for
proper tightness.
Check the blade condition frequently, particularly if the edger has
hit a foreign object or is vibrating. Your Authorised Dealer will be
happy to sharpen or replace blades as necessary, or if you prefer,
supply the parts you will need to do the job yourself.

Engine Maintenance
Consult the engine booklet for the maker’s instructions.
DRAINING THE OIL.
Remove the drain plug which is situated at the rear base of the
engine. Collect the old oil in a suitable tray such as a two litre ice
cream container.
IGNITION.
Your engine has a breaker-less solid state ignition system which
requires no maintenance other than occasional attention to the
spark plug. We recommend cleaning and re-gapping
every 50 hours with replacement every 100 hours (see engine
instruction booklet).
CAUTION
DO NOT SANDBLAST PLUGS as abra-
sive grains can enter the engine and
cause serious damage. USE ONLY THE
EXACT TYPE OF REPLACEMENT PLUG
specified in the engine instruction booklet.
AIR CLEANER.
A clean filter cartridge, correctly fitted, is ESSENTIAL for long
engine life. Service the filter every 25 hours running (more often
under adverse conditions) according to the instructions in the
engine booklet.
MUFFLER.
A rusted or damaged muffler can permit increased exhaust noise.
Check the muffler condition periodically and replace it only with a
genuine original equipment part.
BELT ADJUSTMENT.
1. Remove the spark plug lead and position it to prevent
accidental contact with spark plug.
2. Remove belt cover.
3. Using a 13mm socket, slacken the four bolts holding the
adjusting base.
4. Slide the adjusting base to tighten the belt and re-clamp the
four bolts.
5. Replace the belt cover.
2. Belt cover nut
