BeforeYouBegin
Beforeyouinstallthemodem,notethefollowing:
GototheMultiTechwebsiteanddownloadtheappropriatemodemdriver.
Also,whileyouareattheMultiTechwebsite,gototheSoftwareareaanddownloadtheGlobalWizard.
UsethisproductonlywithUL‐andCULlistedcompu ters(U.S.A.andCanada)
Toreducetheriskoffire,useonly26AWG(.41mm)orlargertelephonewiring.
Neverinstalltelephonewiringduringalightningstorm.
Neverinstallatelephonejackinawetlocationunlessthejackisspecificallydesignedforwetlocations.
Nevertouchuninsulatedtelephonewir esorterminalsunlessthetelephonelinehasbeendisconnectedat

themetalshellofthemodem’sRS232connectortoensurethatthereisnovoltagedifferencebetweenyouand
themodem.
OpeningtheModem
1. Ifthemodemisconnected,turnitoffandremoveallconnectingcables(includingthepowerandline
cables).
2. Turnthemodemupsidedown.
3. Onthebottomofthemodemaretwoscrews,whichholdthecasetogether. Removebothscrewsandset
themaside.
4. Turnthemodemrightsideup.

5. Beforetouchinganythinginsidethemodemcase,dischargeanystaticinyourbodybytouchingapieceof
groundedmetalsuchasthecomputerchassis.Electrostaticdischarge(ESD)isthereleaseofstoredstatic
electricitythatcandamageelectricalcircuitryorcomponents
.Staticelectricityisoftenstoredinyourbody,
anddischargedwhenyoucomeincontactwithanobjectofadifferentpotential.
6. PerformtheprocedurebelowdescribedinthissectiononlyatanESDworkstationusinganantistaticwrist
strap.Ifsuchastationisnotavailable,youcanprovidesomeESDprotectionbywearinganantistaticwrist
strapandattachingittoametalgroundscrew(lug).
7. Removethetoppartofthemodemcase.

Note: TheSpeakerModejumperisforamodemwiththevoiceoption
ChangingtheDialUp/LeasedLineJumper
Asshippedfromthefactory,yourmodemisconfiguredfornormaldialupoperation.Thatis,themodemmust
dialaphonenumbertoconnecttoanothermodem.Tousethemodemonaleasedline,youmustchange
jumperJ2toselectleasedlineoperation,andJ3toselectwhetheritwillbetheoriginatingortheanswering
modem.Ifdialupoperationisselected,J3hasnoeffect.
SeeChapter3foradditionalleasedlineinformation.
Thefactorydefaultistheanswerposition.Thismakesthemodemtheansweringmodemontheleasedline.

Thespeakerjumperisnexttotheexternalspeakerjack.
Thefactorydefaultpositionofthevoicejumperissetforastereospeakerorsoundcard.Ajumperplug
coversbothpinsofthejumper.
Tousethemodemwithamonophonicexternalspeaker,removethejumperplugfromthejumperpins.You
canstoreitbyplacingitononejumperpin.
ConnectingtheModemtoYourPC
Turnoffyourcomputer.Placethemodeminaconvenientlocation,andthenconnectittoyourcomputer’s
serialport,thetelephonelineorleasedline,ACpower,and,optionally,yourtelephone.

Ifyouwanttoconnectaphonetosamelineasthemodem,plugitintothemodem’sPHONEjack.
Important:ThePHONEjackisnotinterchangeablewiththeLINEjack.DonotplugthetelephoneintotheLINE
jackorthelinecableintothePHONEjack.
ConnectaMicrophone(VoiceOption)
Forvoicemailorspeakerphoneapplications,pluganunamplifiedmicrophoneintotheMICjackonthesideof
themodem.Themicrophoneshouldhaveastereo1/8inchminiplug.Donotuseamonophonicmicrophone.
ConnectSpeakers(VoiceOption)
Forspeakerphoneorvoicemailapplications,usea1/8inchplu g maletomalestereopatchcordtoconnectthe
SPKRjackonthesideofthemodemtotheLINEINjackonyoursoundcard.Ifyoursoundcarddoesnothavea
LINEINjack,useitsMICjack.ThestereomaletomalepatchcordcanbepurchasedatalocalPCretailstore.
Ifyoudonothaveasoundcard,youcanplugan unamplifiedspeakerdirectlyintotheSPKRjack.
ConnecttheModemtotheACPower Outlet
Thepowerswitchislocatedontherightsideofthemodem.MakesureitissettoOFF. 
Attachtheappropriateinterchangeableblademoduletothepowersupplymo dule.Connectthepowerlead
fromthepowersupplymoduleintothePWRjackonthemodem .Now,plugthepowersupplymoduleintoyour
powersource.
Note: Useonlythepowersupplysuppliedwiththemodem.Useofanyotherpowersupplyvoidsthewarranty
andcandamagethemodem.
PowerOnTest
Testthemodembyturningiton.Whenyouturniton,themodemperformsadiagnosticselftest,after which
the56indicatorshouldlight.Ifthisdoesnothappen,checkthatthepowerswitchison,thepowersupplyis
solidlyconnected,andtheACoutletisli ve.Ifthesemeasuresdonotwork,refertoChapter6,
“Troubleshooting”.
InstallingtheModemDriver
IfyouuseWindows2000orabove,youmustinstallthemodemdriver.ThemodemdrivertellsWindowshowto
controlthemodem.IfyouuseaLinuxoperatingsystem,pleasereferAppendixD.Ifyouuseanotheroperating
system,pleaserefertoitsdocumentationformodeminstallationinformation.
DownloadingandInstallingtheModemDriver
Todownloadandinstallthemodemdriver:
1. FromtheMultiTechwebsite,downloadthe.zipfileofthedriverthatisappropriatetoyouroperating
system.
2. Extractthecontentsofthezipfiletothedesired location.
3. Powerdownyourcomputer.

TheMultiModemZBAmodemcanbeusedonatwowireleasedline.
Aleasedlineisaprivate,permanenttelephoneconnectionbetweentwopoints.Unlikenormaldialup
connections,aleasedlineisalwaysactive.Themodemsautomaticallyconnectwhentheyareattachedtothe
lineandareturnedon.Becausealeasedlineisalwaysactive,oneofthetwomodemsonthelinemustbe
configuredastheoriginatemodemandtheotherastheanswermodem.Itdoesnotmatterwhichiswhich.
Intheeventofaninterruption,leasedlinemodemsautomaticallyreconnectwhenthedatalineorpoweris
restored.
Setup
1. OpenthemodemandchangejumperJ2toselectleasedlineoperation,andjumperJ3toselecteither
originateoransweroperation,dependinguponhowyouintendtousethemodem.SeeChapter2forthe

requestedtoenterapassword.Ifavalidpasswordisreceived,themodemhangsupandreturnsthecallby
dialingaphonenumberthatisstoredwiththepassword.Thepersonbeingcalledbackmustthenenterthe
passwordasecondtimetoestablishaconnection.
Upto30callbackpasswordsanddialingstringscanbestoredinthemodem.Eachdialingstringcanbeupto34
or35characterslongandcancontaincommandsaswellasphonenumbers.Formobilecallers,thedialingstring
canbeprogrammedtoallowthecallertobypassthestoredcallbacknumberbyenteringatemporarycallback
number,toenteranextensionatthecallbacknumber,ortomakeadirectconnectionwithoutcallback.
Forlocalsecurity,thepasswordsanddialingstringsthatarestoredinthemodemareprotectedfromtampering
byasetuppassword,whichyoushouldchangewhenyousetupthemode m. Youcanfurtherprotectthe
modemagainsttamperingbydisablingitsabilitytorespondtomostATcommands.Tocheckforattempted
breakins,youcanrequestthemodemtodisplaythenumberoffailedpasswordattempts.
Yourmodemwasshippedwithadefaultsetuppassword(MTSMODEM).Thesamepasswordisusedforboth
