WARNING: All packing materials such as tape, plastic sheets, wire
ties and tags are not part of this toy, and should be
discarded for your child’s safety.
BATTERY INSTALLATION
1. Make sure the unit is off.
2. Locate the battery cover on the back of the
unit. Use a coin or screwdriver to open the
battery cover.
3. Install 2 new “AA” (UM-3/LR6) batteries, as
illustrated.
The use of new, alkaline batteries is recommended for maximum
performance.
4. Replace the battery cover and tighten the screw to secure the battery
cover.
BATTERY NOTICE
• Install batteries correctly observing the polarity (+, -) signs to avoid
leakage.
• Do not mix old and new batteries.
• Do not use batteries of different types.
• Remove exhausted or new batteries from the unit when you are not
going to use it for a long time.
• Do not dispose of batteries in fire.
• Do not attempt to recharge ordinary batteries.
The supply terminals are not to be short-circuited.
WE DO NOT RECOMMEND THE USE OF RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES.

NOTE: If for some reason the program/activity stops working, then
please follow these steps:
1) Please turn the unit off.
2) Interrupt the power supply by removing the batteries.
3) Let the unit stand for a few minutes, then replace the batteries.
4) Turn the unit on. The unit will now be ready to play again.

INSTRUCTIONS TO PROGRAM YOUR HOME PHONE NUMBER
AND EMERGENCY NUMBER
The VTech
®
Chat ‘n Learn Friends™ Cell Phone learning toy can
teach your child their home and emergency phone numbers! Once you
program in the appropriate phone numbers, fun activities prompt your
child to memorize and call their home phone number and emergency
phone number. Just follow the simple instructions below!
1. Press the PARENT button, RINGER button, and the ON/OFF button
at the same time. Then release the three buttons. The phone will
enter the editing mode. The LCD SCREEN will show the default
emergency number 911.
2. Press the NUMBER buttons to enter your emergency phone number
up to a maximum of 8 digits. Press the PARENT button in this mode
to correct any errors and erase one digit at a time.
3. Press the SEND button to confirm your emergency phone number.

4. The LCD SCREEN shows the home phone
number editing screen.
5. Press the NUMBER buttons to enter your home
phone number up to a maximum of 12 digits.
Press the PARENT button in this mode to correct
any errors and erase one digit at a time.
6. Press the SEND button to confirm your home phone number.
7. After entering your home and emergency phone numbers, the LCD
SCREEN will play an animation to celebrate your successful
programming of your home and emergency phone numbers.
8. To reset the programmed phone numbers, press the ON/OFF button,
PARENT button and RINGER button at the same time to enter the
editing mode and begin programming the phone numbers again.
IMPORTANT PROGRAMMING NOTES:
Each time the batteries are replaced, your programmed phone numbers
will automatically be erased. Please reprogram your home and
emergency phone numbers by following the instructions listed above.
TO BEGIN PLAY
1. To begin play, press the ON/OFF button. The
telephone will ring two times. After the opening
animation, you will hear “Hello, let’s call a friend!”
Then it will enter the Call a Friend Activity.
2. Press the ACTIVITY buttons to choose one of the following activities:
• Call a Friend
• Number Play
• Music Play
• Fun Games

1) Press one of the four ACTIVITY buttons in the
middle of the game to change activities and
begin the selected activity.
2) To adjust the volume, slide the VOLUME
SWITCH, located on the left side of the unit,
to the high volume ( ) or low volume ( )
position.
3) To turn the unit off, press the ON/OFF button.
You will hear a short tune and the LCD
SCREEN will play a funny animation.
ACTIVITIES
I. CALL A FRIEND
1. When the cell phone is turned on, the Call a Friend activity will
automatically begin. Pressing the Call a Friend button will also
activate this activity.
2. The unit will ask you to choose one of 4 characters
to call. The characters are the Operator, Jessie,
the Doctor and the Police Officer. Press the
SELECT button to scroll through the characters
on the LCD SCREEN.
3. Press the SEND button to select a character to call. Once a character
is selected, the character’s phone number will appear on the LCD
SCREEN. If there is no response for 10 seconds, the unit will choose
a character to call.
4. The LCD SCREEN will show the phone number
of the selected character with the first digit of
the phone number flashing. Press the NUMBER
buttons to enter the phone number shown on the
LCD screen. When the correct number is
pressed, it will become solid and the next number will flash.
5. After entering all of the digits of the phone number, press the SEND
button to confirm the entered phone number and send the call. If the

phone number is entered correctly, the character will be called and a
fun animation with a greeting from the character will play. If the phone
number is entered incorrectly, the operator will appear and ask you
to try another phone number.
II. NUMBER PLAY
Press the Number Activity Button to enter this activity.
A. COUNTING
1. After selecting the Number Play activity, the Counting game will
automatically begin.
2. Jessie will ask you to count the objects shown on the LCD SCREEN.
3. Press a NUMBER button to select the correct number of objects.
The LCD SCREEN will display and identify the selected number.
4. Press the SEND button to confirm the answer. If
the selected answer is correct, a rewarding
animation will play. If the selected answer is
incorrect, the LCD SCREEN will display the
correct answer.
B. NUMBER ORDER
1. After entering the Number Play activity, press the SELECT button
to choose either the Number Order or the Counting games.
2. Select the Number Order game.
3. A sequence of numbers will appear with a blank representing the
missing number.
4. Press the appropriate NUMBER button to fill in the sequence. The
LCD SCREEN will display and identify the selected number.
5. Press the SEND button to confirm the answer. If
the selected answer is correct, a rewarding
animation will play. If the selected answer is
incorrect, the LCD SCREEN will display the
correct answer.

III. MUSIC PLAY
Press the Music Activity button to enter this activity.
A. MUSIC MAKER
1. After selecting the music play activity, it will enter the Music Maker
game automatically.
2. The unit will ask you to create your own music. Each number key
represents a specific music note. Press the NUMBER buttons
randomly and the corresponding music notes will sound out while
animations play.
3. Press the SEND button to confirm the newly
created song. The song will be played while a
fun animation is shown and saved as the new
sound for the ringer. The original composition
will be saved as selection number 0 in the ringer
menu. Refer to the section entitled Ringer Function for additional
information.
B. MUSIC PLAYER
1. After entering the Music Play activity, press the SELECT button to
choose either the Music Maker or the Music Player game.
2. Select the Music Player game.
3. You will be asked to choose a melody to play.
4. Press a NUMBER key (1-5) to select a piece of
music and hear a sample of the selection.
5. Press the SEND button to confirm the selection
and hear the music while a fun animation plays.

IV. FUN GAMES
1. Press the Fun Games Activity button to enter the activity.
2. The LCD SCREEN will scroll through the mini games in a continuous
sequence. There will be four games:
Funny Face
Number Catch
Card Game
Find Me
3. Press the SELECT button to manually scroll through the game
selections.
4. Press the SEND button to select the game that is displayed on the
LCD SCREEN.
5. If there is no response for 10 seconds, the unit will randomly choose
one of the games to play.
A. FUNNY FACE
1. Once the Funny Face game is chosen, you will be asked to make a
funny face. The LCD SCREEN will display two parts of a face. An
arrow pointing to the upper part will appear. Press the SELECT button
to scroll through the various face designs.
2. Press the SEND button to confirm the selection when the desired
design appears on the LCD SCREEN. Once a design is chosen for
the upper part of the face, the arrow will move to the lower part.
3. Repeat the above steps to select and confirm the lower part of the
face.
4. Once the entire design of the face is chosen, the
LCD SCREEN will show an animation of the
selected face.

B. NUMBER CATCH
1. The Police Officer will ask you to catch the numbers moving around
on the LCD screen, which can be captured when a square moves
over them.
2. When the desired number moves into the square, press the
corresponding NUMBER button to catch it. The number being caught
will disappear.
3. If you can catch all five numbers within 45
seconds, a rewarding animation will play. If time
runs out before the five numbers are caught, the
game will end and an animation will show that
the time has expired.
C. MATCHING GAME
1. The LCD SCREEN will display four pairs of cards and the unit will
ask you to pick a card and find its match.
2. Press the NUMBER button that corresponds to the desired card on
the screen. If the cards are matched, they will disappear.
3. If you can match all of the pairs of cards within
50 seconds, a rewarding animation will play. If
time runs out before all of the cards are matched,
the game will end and an animation will show
that the time has expired.
D. FIND ME
1. Jessie will appear on the LCD SCREEN and
disappear into a hiding place. You must find her
in order to win the game.
2. Press the NUMBER button that corresponds to the desired hiding
spot on the screen to check and see if Jessie is hiding in that spot.
3. There are 3 rounds in this game. You will need to correctly answer
all questions before entering the next round.

Round 1 – You have 40 seconds to find Jessie.
Round 2 – You have 30 seconds to find Jessie.
Round 3 – You have 20 seconds to find Jessie.
4. If the correct hiding spot is selected, an animation
of Jessie emerging from her hiding spot will
appear. If the incorrect hiding spot is selected,
an animation of an animal emerging from the
hiding spot will appear. When one round is
successfully completed within the time limit, a rewarding animation
will be shown. If time runs out before Jessie is found, the game will
end and an animation will show that the time has expired.
MESSAGE FUNCTION
1. If there is no input for 60 seconds, an incoming voice mail message
from a character will be generated. The LIGHT-UP VOICE MAIL button
will flash and the ringer will sound out to alert you of a new message.
2. Press the LIGHT-UP VOICE MAIL button to retrieve the incoming
message. A message from one of the characters will play and invite
you to play a game. The requested game will begin.
3. If you do not retrieve the new message within 10 seconds, the LIGHT-
UP VOICE MAIL button will stop flashing. If there is no response
within the next 50 seconds, the unit will turn off to preserve the life of
the batteries.
4. The incoming message will be interrupted if any of the buttons, other
than the LIGHT-UP VOICE MAIL button, is pressed.

RINGER FUNCTION
Press the RINGER button to hear the selected ringer sound.
HOW TO SET THE CURRENT SOUND OR MELODY OF THE RINGER
1. Press the Music Activity button to enter the Music Maker game.
2. Press the RINGER button and you will be asked to set the ringer.
The LCD SCREEN will show icons representing the various sounds
or melodies in a continuous sequence. You can choose from 4
different sounds, 5 pre-programmed melodies or a melody created
in the Music Maker game.
3. Press the corresponding NUMBER button to hear a sample of the
sounds or melodies.
4. Press the SEND button to confirm the displayed selection. You will
hear the selected sound or melody and an animation will play. If there
is no input for 20 seconds, it will set the displayed sound or melody
as the default ringer.
PARENT BUTTON
1. Press the PARENT button in the Call a Friend
activity and the unit will randomly ask you to call
either the emergency phone number or the home
phone number.

2. The LCD SCREEN will display either the Operator or Police Officer.
Press the NUMBER buttons to call the desired phone number.
3. Press the SEND button to confirm the phone number that was entered
and send the call. If the phone number is entered correctly, a fun
animation with a greeting from a character will play. If the phone
number is entered incorrectly, the correct number will be shown.
4. When the PARENT key is pressed in the other activities, the unit will
voice out specific messages associated with the game that is currently
being played.

AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF
To preserve battery life, the VTech
®
Chat ‘n Learn Friends
Cell Phone
learning toy will automatically turn off after 2 minutes without input. It
can be turned on again by pressing the ON/OFF button.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
1. Keep the unit clean by wiping it with a slightly damp cloth.
2. Keep the unit out of direct sunlight and away from any direct heat
source.
3. Remove the batteries when the unit is not in use for an extended
period of time.
4. Do not drop the unit on hard surfaces and do not expose the unit to
moisture or water.
