Note
• Always be sure to use the TL-EW01 special tool to remove the cable.
• Be careful not to let water get into the terminal.
• Be sure to read these service instructions in conjunction with the service
instructions for the ST-7970/SW-7971 before use.

CAUTION
• If using an industrial-use dryer, make sure that no burning from the hot
air occurs.

■ Attaching the heat shrinking tubes
Use an industrial-use dryer to shrink
the tubes from the middles toward the
ends, while trying to expel as much
air as possible.
Heat the tubes until they become
transparent and until melted adhesive
is protruding from both ends.
• If using an industrial-use dryer,
make sure that no burning from the
hot air occurs.
Note
• Do not heat the tubes any more than necessary.
• The heat shrinking tubes are important components for waterproofing,
preventing the connectors from pulling out and strengthening the housing
openings, so do not use anything other than genuine parts.
• Because the tubes contain adhesive, do not reuse the electric cables
after this process has been carried out. Use new cables if carrying out
any replacements.

Connecting the electric cables
■ Connecting to junction B
Insert the connector coming from junction (A) into the connector coming
from junction (B) so that the triangular marks (
d) on the connectors are
aligned with each other. Push the connectors together until they connect
with a click. Because of the waterproof structure of the connectors, they do
not fit together rigidly. Be sure to push them together until they connect
with a click.
■ Connecting the ST-7970 and SW-7971
When connecting the ST-7970 to the SW-7971, use the accessory
extension cable which is included with the SW-7971 to make the
connection.
■ ST-7970 connection
1. Use the TL-EW01 special tool to connect to
the ST-7970. Set so that the projection on
the connector is aligned with the groove on
the narrow end.

junction (A)
Connector from junction (B)
Use the accessory cable ties to secure junction (A) to the outer casing of
the brake cable. In addition, set the connector of junction (A) onto the outer
casing of the rear brake cable as shown in the illustration.
* Run an excess length of cable along the handlebars and secure it to
the handlebars with cable ties.
• Install the battery in order to check the connections. Operate the shifting
switch and check that the front derailleur and rear derailleur both operate.
• Be sure to operate the shifting switch for the left lever once or more to
set the front derailleur to the large chainring position as shown in the
illustration for greater ease when installing the chain. After this, be sure to
remove the battery.
1. When connecting the connectors of the various cables, insert the
connectors into the heat shrinking tube.
2. The cables have colored tubes attached to them for identification
purposes, so when connecting the cables, be sure to match the colors
correctly while referring to the cable connection diagram.
Note:
• Check that there are no foreign particles inside the connectors.
• Check that the directions of the connectors are correct and that they
are securely inserted into the opposing terminals and are not raised
up.
3. After connecting the connectors, be sure to check that operation is
correct before processing the heat shrinking tube.

• When routing the electric cable to junction (A), allow enough looseness in
the cable so that the ST-7970 / SW-7971 installation position can be
adjusted and so that the handlebars can be turned fully to the left and
right. When routing the electric cable to junction (A), the cable can be laid
underneath the handlebar tape when it is wound onto the handlebars.
• Refer ST-7970 service instructions for button indicator operations.

2. Open up the bracket cover and lift up
the connector cover. Connect the
connector to the terminal at the lever
end so that the projection on the
connector is aligned with the groove in
the connector cover. Be sure to push
them together until they connect with a
click. Either the top or bottom terminal
can be used.
3. The remaining terminal can be used for an
additional shifting switch. If not using an additional
shifting switch, be sure to attach a dummy plug to
the unused terminal using the TL-EW01.
• In addition, use the wide end of the TL-EW01 special tool when
disconnecting the connectors. If you pull too firmly on the connectors,
problems with operation may occur. Insert the special tool so that the flat
side is facing toward the derailleur, and then tilt it so as to pull out the
connector. When disconnecting the connector at the lever end, insert the
special tool so that the flat side is facing toward the lever. When
disconnecting the connector of junction (A), insert the special tool so that
the flat side is facing toward junction (A).
■ Routing the electric cables
There are three methods of installation that can be used depending on the
holes in the handlebars.
• Hole size: Width 7 mm / length 21 mm or more
