1 General Description
The AS3665 is a capacitive low noise charge pump
with 9 current sources. The charge pump
automatically switches between 1:1 and 1:1.5
modes. The connected current sources have a very
low voltage compliance to improve efficiency of the
whole system. Three current sources have the
possibility to operate either from VBAT or VCP
(especially useful for red LEDs).
The internal control is done by command based
pattern generators implemented by three
sequencers. These commands are optimized for
lighting applications (e.g. ramp up brightness
logarithmically). It includes high level commands
like conditionals jumps and variables. Any of the
three sequencers can be dynamically mapped to
any of the 9 PWM generators for the LEDs.
The AS3665 supports an audio input and
sophisticated light patterns can be controlled by
internal digital filters. The AS3665 is controlled by
I
2C mode. Synchronization over several AS3665 is
possible by the TRIG pin.
The AS3665 is available in a space-saving WL-
CSP-25 (2.5x2.5mm) 0.5mm pitch and operates
over the -30ºC to +85ºC temperature range.

9.2 Starting the AS3665 Demo software
The correct installed demo software can be started from Start > Programs > austriamicrosystems AG > AS3665
Demosoftware. When starting the demosoftware the first time, the firmware of the USB-box has to be updated.
To do this, follow the steps which are shown on the screen. After the successful update of the firmware you can
start working with AS3665 demoboards.
Now it should be indicated in the lower left corner of the demo-software, that the USB-box is connected correctly
and that the firmware was updated successfully.
The different register settings can be changed through the GUI of the demosoftware, additionally you can use the
register table to change single bits. The register table can be opened by clicking the button “Registers”. The GUI
settings are periodically updated by activating the ‘register polling’ checkbox.

9.3 First Steps
To create the first patterns do as described in the following:
Set the bit for chip enable:
This can be done either by clicking the checkbox above or by setting bit 6 at the address 00h.
Enable the current sources:
So change to the “current sources”- tab and set the checkbox “Const On” beneath “All current sources” to enable
all current sources. Then set the LED currents by setting “current” and “LedMax” , for instance to 255 and
25.5mA.
After this you can start programming, either manually or by using the Led Sequence generator, if you do it
manually you have to compile the code after writing by pressing the compile-button, if you generate a pattern
using the sequence generator you have to press the button “generate code” after drawing the sequence. In both
cases you just have to press two buttons afterwards. At first it is the “LoadToChip”-Button and then the “Run”-
Button or rather the “Run All”-button in the “Programming”-tab.

10 Hardware
There are two types of Demoboards available for AS3665, namely the mobile and the dual demoboard. The
mobile demoboard is shaped like a mobile phone and the LEDs are placed like in a mobile phone. The dual
demoboard features two AS3665, which are connected together. So this board gives you the opportunity to test
the synchronization of two AS3665, by using the Trig-input. It is possible to connect up to eight AS3665 together
by connecting different resistors to the ADDR-pin.
