Installation and Maintenance Instructions
Notice
“Delta-Star” switches and operating mechanisms are designed for rapid
and simple installation. By carefully following these instructions, the pos-
sibility of error and delay can be minimized. Time spent in reading the
instructions can save many hours of installation time.

These instructions are written to cover the installation of the most common switches
and mechanisms. They do not take the place of the switch and mechanism drawing lay-
outs furnished with this order, but are intended to supplement them. It may be appar-
ent that these instruction do not adequately meets the demands of your installation. In
such instances where the installation is not covered by these instruction please contact

SHIPMENT & INSPECTION
Check the total shipment for completeness against the bill of material and
installation drawings. If the switch shipping crate or the switch show evi-
dence of shipping damage note the damage on the bill of lading and notify
the appropriate person in your territory for inspection.
Uncrate and/or remove all wire ties and check to see that the switch is un-
damaged. When uncrating, be careful not to discard any attached bags of
parts. If damage is evident, report immediately to the appropriate person
in your territory for inspection.
The switches are normally shipped with the live parts bolted to the base
hardware, the insulators being shipped separately.
Bolts or other ancillary parts for use with the switch are attached to the
switch in a burlap bag. Do not discard these parts. Operating Mechanism
components are shipped on a maximum assembled basis and labeled,
showing part numbers for their associated operating mechanism drawing.
The operating mechanism components are crated, boxed, or bagged, and
shipped separately from the switch units. All necessary pipe is bundled and
tagged for shipment.

Do not remove the hinge bolts on the Vertical Break
Switch without opening the switch first if it is to be hori-
zontally mounted or closing the switch if it is to be verti-
cally mounted. The counter balance can pose a signifi-
cant personal risk if these important safety instruction
are not followed.
Never disassemble the counter balance on the switch live
part mechanism assembly, as these are properly ad-
justed at the factory.

Installation, Adjustment and Maintenance
Switches are normally shipped with the live parts bolted to the base. If the
switch is factory assembled with insulators, skip section one and move on
to section two. It is recommended that factory assembled switches be
checked for alignment and proper adjustment after being mounted on the
structure.
1. Assembly
Each switch is stenciled numerically for identification, i.e. 1, 11, 111.
This identification number appears on the operation mechanism draw-
ing. The switches are shipped without insulators which are to be in-
stalled in the field; some minor adjustment may be necessary. The
following procedure is for assembling and adjusting the switch units.
(A) Disengage the live parts from the base hardware. Do not disturb
the position of the operating levers. Keep the blade and hinge as-
semblies together.
(B) Mount the switch base onto the structure. Make sure that the
structure is squared and level. Shim as needed to insure that the
base is not put into a twist or bind. This could make proper
switch operation difficult to achieve.
(C) Install the insulators to the pivot and hat brackets. It is best to
use studs in the bottom of the insulators to make installation
easier. Check the rear (rotating) insulator to see that it is run-
ning concentric. If an insulator is not square from end to end, the
rotation could cause it to wobble. Use the leveling screws on the
pivot to true up the rotation. If this cannot be achieved, another
insulator should be used.
(D) Attach the live parts on top of the insulators. Draw up all bolts
but do not tighten fully. Install the jaw assembly to the front in-
sulator with bolts. Set the hinge and blade assemblies on the two
5
Before any installation is started, make sure that applica-
ble equipment is de-energized and properly grounded.
Protect the installers adequately from any adjacent elec-
trically energized parts by using barriers, screens, etc.
WARNING
rear insulators. Attach the hinge to the center insulator with
bolts. With the blade in the uncammed position, install the bolts
down through the rotator into the rear insulator. Check the align-
ment of the hinge with the jaw and tighten the mounting bolts.
With the blade still uncammed the tip is to be centered in be-
tween the contact fingers, then tighten the mounting bolts for the
jaw.
(E) Arcing horns, if used, are shipped with the switch. However, the
stationary horn is not attached for shipment. Install the station-
ary horn. Adjust the arcing horn so it does not touch when the
switch is in the closed position, but makes contact as the blade
rotates open. Only a slight pressure should exist between the
horns. Excessive pressure will cause binding during operation of
the switch.
2. Installation and Adjustment
Install the switch units onto the structure as noted in “1-B” securely
bolting the base in the position sequence shown on the operating
mechanism drawing.
(A) A vertical break switch is in the closed position when the blade tip
is fully engaged in the jaw between the contact fingers. In this
position the blade would be parallel to the
mounting base. The travel of the blade is in a
plane that passes through the longitudinal
axis of the switch phase.
(B) Fully close all phases manually by rotating the
rear insulator. In this position the blade tip
should be sitting level in the jaw and in line
with the contact finger back up springs. The
crank arm should be against the closed stop.
The arcing horn should not be in contact with the bypass arm.
See figure at right.
1. If the blade tip is not laying flat in the jaw, adjust the close
stop on the bridge. Be careful not to adjust it too far as not to
allow the mechanism to over center and thereby not locking
the switch in a closed position.
2. In the unlikely event that there is not sufficient adjustment in
the stop to allow for the blade tip to lay flat, then the blade
will need to be rotated in the blade adaptor. Loosen the u-
bolts on the blade adaptor and slightly rotate the blade. Do
not remove the blade. Tighten the nuts on the u-bolts and
check the positioning again. Repeat if necessary to achieve
6
proper positioning.
3. If the blade tip is more than 0.5 inches above or below the
contact finger back-up spring, the position will need to be ad-
justed. Loosen the jam nuts on the turnbuckle between the
crank arm and the connector. Lengthen or shorten the ex-
posed turnbuckle as needed to get the blade tip within toler-
ance. Be sure to firmly tighten the jam nuts back up or the
switch could come out of adjustment.
(C) Open each phase and see that all the blades are in line with each
other at just past 90°. If not, adjust the open stop on the bridge
to achieve the proper position. Close each phase.
(D) Attach the inter-phase pipe and clevises to the levers on the piv-
ots. Take up the slack in the pipe and snug the piercing bolts in
the clevises. Do not pierce the pipe at this time.
(E) Attach the reach rod from the operating mechanism to the lever
on the drive phase pivot.
(F) Open the switch using the operator. If it is a motor operator, use
the manual handle. Open the switch and check the position of the
blades to see that they are inline and past 90°. Close the switch
and check to see that the blade tips are in the proper closed posi-
tion as outlined in 2-B.
(G) If either of the open or closed conditions are not met, disconnect
the drive and check the phase manually. After it operates satis-
factorily manually, reattach the clevis and adjust as needed to
achieve correct operation of the phase.
(H) Once all operations have been satisfactorily completed, the pierc-
ing bolts can be tightened completely.
3. Maintenance
Delta-Star TMX switches are designed to operate with little or no
maintenance over the life of the switch. However, when inspections
are made the following will result in an easier operating switch.
(A) Clean contacts with a steel wool, and apply a thin coat of Nye
Rheolube 368 or equal conducting PAO grease.
Special Note:
Do not use sandpaper, emery cloth or any emery product on the
contacts
7
(B) The hinge contacts are sealed and should never require mainte-
nance.
(C) All conducting aluminum connections should be properly pre-
pared and coated with Penetrox A or equal oxide–inhibiting com-
pound.
(D) Straighten or replace damaged arcing horns.
