The255iemploysseveralformsofprotection,bothforitsownself-preservationaswellastheprotectionof

loudspeakersandothercomponentstowhichitisconnected.TheprotectionmechanismsincludeDCoset,

The255ioersoptionalphonoandadigital-to-analogueconverter(DAC)module.Thephonomodulehas

selectablegainandissuitableforbothmovingmagnet(MM)andmovingcoil(MC)cartridges.TheDAC

moduleutilisesanES9038PROchipsetwith140dBdynamicrange,PCM384kHzandDSD256,asynchronous

galvanicallyisolatedUSBandoers5digitalinputs(2xcoaxial,2xopticalandUSB).Additionofthese

moduleswillensureseamlessintegrationintoanycurrentorfuturesystem.

Installation

Unpacking

The255iissuppliedwiththefollowingaccessories:

Werecommendyouretainthepackagingforreuseincaseyouneedtotransporttheunitatalaterdate.

Placement

Your255iintegratedampliershouldgenerallybeplacedclosetoyourprimarysourcecomponent,keeping

interconnectcablingshort.Positionallothercomponentsofyoursystemcloseenoughtoyour255itoavoid

havingtostretchorextendanyoftheinterconnectcables.

Ventilation Requirements

Your255imaydissipateconsiderablepowerintheformofheat.Itshouldbeplacedinapositionthatdoesnot

restricttheairowaroundit.

Asa“ruleofthumb”,allowatleast80mm(3inches)aboveandtoeachsideoftheunitandmountthe255iona

atsurfaceforaircirculationtoallowthisheattodissipate.Donotsitdirectlyontoacarpetedsurfaceasitwill

preventtheheatsinksfromoperatingasdesigned

Ifthedeviceisusedinacabinet,airmustbeabletoowthrough.Anenclosedcabinetwillseverelyrestrictheat

dissipation.

Ensurethatnothingisplacedaboveorbelowtheamplierthatmightblockorrestrictthevents.

Ifthe255ihasinadequateventilationand/orisplayedveryenthusiasticallyforaperiodoftime,itstemperature

mayriseabovethedesignatedoperatinglevelandtheover-temperatureprotectionwilltrip–disconnectingthe

outputuntilithascooledsuciently.

Other Devices

Ideally,your255iintegratedampliershouldnotbelocateddirectlyaboveoradjacenttootherheat-producing

productssuchasradiators,otherpowerampliers,etc.Ifmultipleampliersarebeingusedandspaceis

restricted,placingthemsidebysideispreferabletostacking.

Itisadvisabletopositionyour255iawayfrom(andifpossible,connectedtoapowersocketonadierent

circuitfrom)powerfulelectricalorelectronicproductssuchasTVsets,computers,cookers,fridgesetc.Thiswill

preventthepossibilityofthestrongelectricalandelectromagneticemissionsorinterferencegivenobysuch

devicesadverselyaectingtheperformanceofyouramplier.

Ifyouarelikeus,therstthingyouwillwanttodoistoplayyourfavouritepieceofmusicthroughyournew

Switch on source component

Turnonthesourcecomponent,makingsureyouhaveyourfavouriterecordingreadytoplay.

Switch on your 255i

Aftercheckingthesupplyvoltagecompatibilitywiththevoltageratingontherearpanel,insertthepowercord

suppliedintotherearoftheunitandintothewallsocket.Switchontheamplierusingthebuttononthefront

panel.

Select the appropriate input

Usingthe∧/∨buttonsonthefrontpanelofyour255i,ortheremotecontrol,selecttheinputtowhichthe

sourcecomponentisconnected.

Play your source material

Startplayingyourfavouriterecording.

Increase the volume

2 Amp In

Theunbalanced(RCA)ampininputsallowdirectconnectiontothepowerampliersectionsofyour255iwhen

usedinconjunctionwiththeSeparatefunction(seeSeparate,page24).

3 Pre Out

Theunbalanced(RCA)preampoutputsprovideasingle-endedpreamplevelaudiosignalforconnectiontoanexternal

poweramplieroractivesubwoofer.

4 Tape Out

Theunbalanced(RCA)tapeoutputsprovideasingle-endedlinelevelaudiosignal,suitableforrecordingfrom

theselectedsourceinput.ThisoutputisdisconnectedwhenINPUT5isselected;topreventanypotentially

damagingfeedbackloopsifthetapeoutputisconnectedtothisinput.

5 Trigger Input

Thetriggerinputallowsyour255iintegratedampliertobebroughtinandoutofstandbybyaremotely

connecteddevice;forexample,anotheraudiocomponentorahomeautomationsystem.Thetriggerinputuses

amono3.5mm(⅛”)plugandacceptsvoltagesof0VDCupto12VDC.Atriggervoltagebetween3Vand12V

DCwillbringtheamplieroutofstandbyanditwillenterstandbywhenthetriggervoltageis0VDC.

11 AC Mains Input

TheIECstandardACmainsinputisusedwiththeremovablepowercordtosupplyyour255iintegratedamplier

withpower.

PriortoconnectiontotheACmains,pleasecheckthevoltagelabelontherearpaneltoensurethatyouramplier

conformstothepowersupplyinyourarea.Neverattempttoconnecttheunittoanincorrectvoltage–severe

damagemayresult.

12 AC Mains Fuse

TheACmainsfuseisuserserviceable,andshouldalwaysbereplacedwiththesametypeandrating(see

TechnicalSpecications,page27).

Notes: Fusesdonotusuallyblowwithoutareason.Anydoubtsaboutfusefailureshouldbeconveyeddirectlyto

yourPerreauxdealer.

Ensureyour255iisdisconnectedfromthemainspowerbeforeattemptingtochangethefuse.

13 Ground Terminal

Thegroundterminalonyour255iismostoftenusedforthegroundwireofaturntable,ifyouhavetheoptional

phonopreamplierinstalled.Connectingthegroundwirefromyourturntablestonearmtothisterminalusually

minimisesanyhumorbuzzingtowhichtheturntablemayotherwisebesusceptible.YourauthorisedPerreaux

dealercanassistyouinhandlingthisproblemifitshouldarise.

1 Standby Button

Thestandbybuttonswitchestheamplierbetweennormaloperationandstandby.

2 The LED indicator

TheLEDindicatorshowstheACmainspowerstatusofyour255i.TheLEDisilluminatedwhenthepowerswitchat

therearoftheamplierisswitchedonandashesslowlytoindicatetheunitispoweringupandinitialising.

3 Volume Control/Interface Knob

Rotatetoadjustthevolumeleveloftheloudspeakeroutputandthepreampoutput.ItdoesnotaecttheTAPE

output.

Thevolumeisraisedorloweredinprecise0.5dBincrementsthroughouttheentiregainrange.Thevolume

incrementwillincreasethefastertheknobisrotated,makingiteasiertomovequicklybetweenextremelylow

andnormallisteninglevels.

Note:Whenthehometheatreinput(HTLOOP)isselected,oraninputissettobypassthevolumecontrol(see

Bypass,page22),theinterfaceknobwillhavenoeectonthevolumelevel.

4 Infrared Sensor

Receivesinfrared(IR)commandsfromthesuppliedremotecontrol.Ordinarily,your255imusthaveunobstructed

line-of-sightwiththeremotecontrolinordertorespondtoremotecontrolcommands.

Ifyourintegratedamplieristobeplacedinsideacabinet,youmayusetheIRinputattherearoftheunit

(seeIRInput,page12)tosolvetheproblem.

5 Front Panel Buttons

Usethesebuttonstocontrolyour255iintegratedamplier.Theyarealsousedtonavigatetheéloquencemenu

systemand,alongwiththeinterfaceknob,makeanychangestothesettings.

auxiliaryinputacceptsa3.5mm(⅛”)stereoplug.

Notes:TheAUXILIARYinputwillautomaticallybeselectedasthecurrentsourcewhenaplugisconnected.

When the plug is disconnected, the input will revert to the last selected source, unless another source input was

selectedwhiletheauxiliarywasstillconnected.

Thevolumeoftheauxiliarysourceshouldbesettothehighestlevelwhichprovidesthebestperformance

withoutdistortingtheaudio.

8 Headphone Output

Theheadphoneoutputallowsconnectionofheadphoneswitha6.4mm(¼”)plug.Headphoneswithan

impedanceofbetween32Ωand600Ωarerecommended.Whentheheadphonesareconnected,theoutputto

theloudspeakersisdisconnected.

andstandby.Pressingthisbuttonputsthe255iintostandby,

disconnecting all power supplies except the digital power supply

forthemicrocontrollerandturningotheremotetriggeroutputs.

2 Time

Thetimekeyshowsthetimeonthedisplayoftheamplier.

3 Navigation Keys

increasesthelongerthevolumekeysareheld.Thisallowsbothneadjustmentswhilemakingiteasiertomove

quicklybetweenextremelylowandnormallisteninglevels.

8 Source Up and Down

Thesourcekeysscrollthroughthesourceinputs,providedtheyareenabled(seeEnable,page20).Ifaninputis

disableditwillnotbeavailableforselectionusingthesourcekeys,althoughitcanstillbeselectedusingthes-keys.

9 S-Keys

Thes-keysprovidedirectselectionofsourceinputs,andcanbecustomisedtoselectyoursixmostfrequently

usedinputs(seeS-Keys,page25).

The Menu System

Themenusystemcanbeusedtocongurethe255i to customise aspects of its operation to suit your

requirements,tooperateinaparticulartypeofinstallation,ortoviewimportantfunctionaldata.

Home Screen

Thehomescreenprovideseasyaccesstothebasicfunctionsoftheintegratedamplier:volumecontrol,input

selectionandmute.Italsoprovidesaneasytoreadandhighlylegibledepictionoftheselectedinputand

currentvolumesetting.

Volume Control

Adjustthevolumesettingusingtheinterfaceknobonthefrontpanel(orusingtheremotecontrol).Thedisplay

willshowthevolumelevelindecibels(dB).Themaximumvolumesettingis+31.5dB,whilelowervolume

settingsprogressintothenegativerangewiththeminimumbeing-96.0dB.

Input Selection

Scrollthroughtheavailableinputsusingthe∧/∨buttonsonthefrontpanel(orusingtheremotecontrol).

Notes: Thelabelsfortheinputs,asdisplayedonthefrontpanel,canbecustomisedforyourconvenience(see

Labels,page19).Disablinganinput(seeEnable,page20)removesitfromselectionbyscrollingfromthefront

panelorremotecontrol(althoughitisstillavailableforselectionviathemenusystemandtheremotecontrols-keys).

Mute

MutethevolumebypressingtheMUTEbuttononthefrontpanel(orusingtheremotecontrol).Themutemode

isindicatedbythevolumelevelbeingreplacedwithMUTEDinthedisplay,whichasheswhilemutemodeis

enabled.

Ifyouincreasethevolumewhilemuteisenabled,themutemodewillbecancelledandthevolumewillincrease

fromthemutedlevel.Thisisasafetymeasuretoavoidsituationswherethevolumemightbeincreasedwhile

muted,onlytohavethesystemun-mutedtoanunexpectedlyhighvolume.

Whenmuteiscancelled,thevolumelevelreplacesMUTEDinthedisplayandstopsashing.

Ifyoudecreasethevolumewhileattenuationisenabled,thevolumelevelwillreducewhilstremaininginthe

attenuatedmode.Whenmuteiscancelled,thevolumelevelwillincreasebythesetattenuationlevel.

Using the remote control:

• Press>orOKtoselectanoption.

• Press<togobacktothepreviousoptionormenu.
