Notes in installation and operating instructions
Please read this information carefully and follow all the instructions outlined below.
This will ensure reliable operation and durability of your unit.
Keep the packaging and operating instructions in a safe place in order to pass them on
to a subsequent owner in the event of selling the unit at a later date.
The following reading aids are used to simplify these operating instructions:

unit. Failure to observe this information may result in material damage or personal injury.
Therefore, please observe this information with particular care.
Safety instructions
A
For safety reasons, the driver should not watch TV/DVD or similar when driving.
Please note that it is illegal in certain countries to watch or to operate a TV/DVD or similar
device when driving.
A
Only use the DVB-T tuner for its intended purpose.
A
Do not clean using cleaning fluid, alcohol or other solvents. Use only a damp cloth.

For road safety reasons, the DTV 6500 features a locking function which blanks the
screen whenever the vehicle is in motion. The picture only appears when the vehicle
is stationary and the parking brake is engaged.
General information

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
A
The system must only be installed by trained personnel.
A
Observe automotive industry quality standards.
A
Fire hazard. When drilling, take care not to damage concealed wiring harnesses, the fuel
tank or fuel lines.
A
Never drill into supporting or safety-relevant body parts.
It is essential to observe the following when installing components in the passenger
compartment:
A
Ensure that the driver has a clear all-round view.
A
Increased risk of injury in the event of an accident. Do not install components in the
inflation range of the airbag or in areas where the head or knees may knock against them.
A
Only install the unit in vehicles with a 12-V or 24-V on-board voltage and negative pole
on the vehicle body. Risk of malfunctions, damage and vehicle fire if installed in unsuitable
vehicles.
A
Do not damage safety system wiring (airbag etc.). (Wiring is normally specially marked,
e.g. by labels.)
A
Do not use test lamps to test the voltage, since excessively high currents can damage /
destroy electronic components.
A
Do not use any pinch or cut connectors. Solder all wiring connections. Insulate all solder
points with shrink hose or insulating tape.
A
Fit toothed washers at earth connections to the vehicle body. If necessary, remove paint
and dirt beforehand. Subsequently, protect bare metal against corrosion.
A
In order to ensure perfect installation, use only the original components supplied. The
use of non-authorised components may result in malfunction.
A
Do not install the unit in positions where it is exposed to high temperatures, dust, dirt or
excessive vibration (e.g. due to direct sunlight or heating vents).

Technical data, design and scope of delivery may vary slightly due to product

The following original accessories are recommended for operating the DVB-T tuner:

Adapter cable CA 1220 for connecting the tuner directly to a colour navigation
system.

Take safety precautions
A
Before starting work, disconnect the earth lead from the negative terminal of the vehicle
battery in order to prevent short circuits. At the same time, follow the vehicle manufacturer's
safety instructions (alarm system, airbag, immobiliser, radio coding, etc.).
Disconnecting the battery may cause various settings to be erased. Theft protection
codes (e.g. for the radio) may have to entered again after installation (if they were not
previously deactivated).
Modes of installation
Whether the DTV 6500 DVB-T tuner is connected to MS 5XXX navigation systems
depends on whether a MI 2x00 or MC 5400 multimedia interface box is connected or
whether the adapter cable CA 1220 is used.
The DTV 6500 can also be operated independently of a navigation system (“stand-
alone”), for example, in connection with the multimedia monitor MM 2700.
Please follow the relevant instructions in the following descriptions as well as the
connection diagram on the cover.

Installation of DVB-T Tuner
■
Before installing
When installing the DVB-T tuner and the other multimedia components, ensure
suitable cable routing and that the required cable length is available.
In positioning the tuner, allow ample space for plugging the connector plug into and
out of the DVB-T tuner whenever necessary. Audio/video connections should be
located for easy access in future.
Using the fastening brackets supplied:

Position both brackets underneath the tuner housing and screw them on using the
casing screws supplied.
☞
Then attach the DVB-T tuner at a suitable point using the self-tapping screws
provided.
✎
As an alternative to fastening with screws (the recommended method of
installation), the velcro strips supplied can be used to fasten the DVB-T tuner.
Installing infrared receiver
■
Installation location
Select the installation location of the IR receiver so that there are no objects between
it and the remote control during normal operation of the remote control from the
user’s position.
■ Attachment
The IR receiver is attached with the supplied adhesive pad:
1. Determine the installation position for the IR receiver.
A
Increased risk of injury in the event of an accident. Do not install components in the
inflation range of the airbag or in areas where the head or knees may knock against them.
2. Clean installation surfaces with methyl alcohol (spirit).
3. Peel protective foil away from one side of the double-sided adhesive pad and
attach pad to the bottom of the IR receiver.
4. Remove protective foil from the underside of the adhesive pad , place IR receiver in
the desired position and press it down firmly.

The installation temperature should be at least 15° Celsius so that the adhesive pad
can develop its full adhesive strength.
Making the electrical connections
☞
Install all cables with care. See illustrations on cover for connection diagram.
☞
Do not cut non-assigned wires. Instead, wind them together and secure to one side.
They may be required for retrofitting additional functions.

Only connect electrical signals to suitable connecting points in the vehicle.
☞
Connect the yellow lead of the power supply cable to the 12 V or 24 V permanent
positive (e.g. to the A4 pin of the ISO-A plug on the navigation computer).
☞
Connect the red lead of the power supply cable to the 12 V or 24 V ignition positive
(accessory contact / ACC) (e.g. to the A7 pin of the ISO-A plug on the navigation
computer).
☞
Connect the black lead to earth (e.g. to A8 pin of the ISO-A plug on the navigation
computer).
☞
Connect the grey lead to the parking brake switch (switch is earthed when brake is
activated).
☞
Insert power supply cable plug into the “DC 12-24V INPUT” socket of the DVB-T
tuner. Ensure that the plug latch is engaged.
■ DVB-T tuner to multimedia monitor (e.g. VDO Dayton MM 2700)
☞
Connect the monitor lead for the MM 2700 to the AV output (“AUDIO OUT L/R”
and “VIDEO OUT”) of the tuner.
☞
Connect the 3.5-mm jack plug of the monitor lead to the socket “IR Remote
Receiver” of the tuner.
✎
In this case connection to an external IR receiver may be omitted. The IR receiver
integrated into the monitor is then used to receive the remote control signals for
the DVB-T tuner.
■ DVB-T tuner to interface box
(with multimedia interface boxes MI 2x00 or MC 5400)
☞
Connect a Cinch cable (not supplied) to the AV output (“AUDIO OUT L/R” and
“VIDEO OUT” sockets) of the tuner.
☞
Connect the Cinch cable to a corresponding AV (audio/video) input of the interface
box.
■
DVB-T tuner to colour navigation computer PC 5x00
(in systems without multimedia interface box)
☞
Unplug the connecting cable between the navigation computer and MM 5x00
monitor at the computer.
☞
Insert adapter cable CA 1220 as per marking between the computer and the
monitor cable and connect the AV output of the DVB-T 6500 to the Cinch sockets of
the CA 1220.
☞
Plug the 3-pin 3.5 mm jack of the CA 1220 into the “IR Remote Receiver” socket on
the DVB-T 6500.
✎
The connection of the external IR receiver can then be omitted - the IR receiver
integrated into the monitor is then used for receiving the remote-control signals of
the DVB-T tuner.

IR receiver (omitted if adapter cable CA 1220 or monitor MM 2700 is used)

Connect the 3.5-mm jack plug of the IR receiver to the “IR Remote Receiver” socket
of the tuner.
■
TV antennas (accessories)
☞
Up to 2 antennae can be connected to the tuner via antenna sockets “ANT IN 1”
and “ANT IN 2” (e.g. VDO Dayton Antenna Set TVA 6500).
☞
If using the TVA 6500 antenna set, turn the phantom power supply “ANT PWR” to
“ON”. This supplies power to the signal amplifier.
✎
For assembly details please see installation instructions for antenna (supplied with
the antenna).
Connecting accessories
■
AV source
An additional AV source (e.g. DVD player) may also be connected to the DVB-T tuner.
☞
Appropriate Cinch cables (accessories) should be connected to the AV input
(“AUDIO / VIDEO IN”) of the DTV 6500.
Other possible connections
■ Connection to the car radio for audio signal output
The audio outputs of the DVB-T tuner’s AV output can be connected to a free input on
the car radio (e.g. AUX) in order to output the tuner's audio signal via the vehicle’s
loudspeakers.
■ WT 5100 (infrared audio transmitter) and WH 5100 (IR headphones)
The stereo output signal from the DVB-T tuner can be transmitted via the infrared
audio transmitter WT 5100 and received wirelessly via the infrared headphones
WH 5100.
The audio output of the DVB-T tuner is connected to the WT 5100 input for this
purpose. The WT 5100 must be positioned at a suitable spot in the vehicle.
Setting up the remote control

Insert batteries

Open the battery compartment on the back of
the remote control.
☞
Insert two new Type AAA (micro) batteries.
Ensure correct polarity (marked in the battery
compartment).
☞
Close the battery compartment.

When the equipment is first put into operation, it is important for an antenna to be
connected to the DTV 6500 and that the vehicle is parked in a location where DVB-T
reception is possible. If necessary, enquire in advance via conventional media or the
internet whether DVB-T is available in your area.
☞
Switch on the ignition.
:
The “Welcome!” screen with the DVB logo appears briefly.
Thereafter you should carry out the following steps to install:

“Country Setup” - to set the OSD language
☞
Press the 4 or 6 key to set the
required language for the menu.
☞
Press the OK button to go to the
next step of the install procedure.
■
TV Format
☞
Press the 4 or 6 key to set the desired TV format.
☞
Select “4:3” (Letterbox) or “16:9” depending on the monitor you have connected.
☞
Press the OK button to go to the next step of the installation procedure.
■ Automatic Channel Search
Once a TV format the equipment automatically searches through the entire reception
range of the DVB-T tuner for programmes that it can receive.
☞
Please note that full installation is only possible when a DVB-T signal is available.
:
The progress of the channel search and the number of channels located is displayed
on the screen.
:
When the search has completed successfully, the equipment tunes in to the first
program on the automatically generated list.
✎
If the channel search fails to locate any channels, a message to that effect is
displayed.
☞
In this event, press the OK button to open the antenna installation menu.

Antenna Installation Menu
The antenna installation menu helps you check that the receiving antenna(e) is (are)
properly connected and functioning correctly. The antenna installation menu is always
opened automatically if the automatic channel fails to locate a single channel.
☞
Use the number keys to enter the number of a channel that you know to be
transmitting a DVB-T signal.
✎
Information concerning channel frequencies can be obtained, for example from the
internet page of your local TV station.
☞
Press OK.
:
The reception frequency of the
selected channel is displayed.
Underneath it there will appear
two bars representing signal
strength and reception quality
(bit error rate).
✎
The parameters “Strength” and
“Quality” indicate the field
strength and the picture and sound
quality with which a channel can
be received.
☞
Park the vehicle in the open and observe how high each of the bars gets. If
necessary, move the vehicle a few metres until the bars both reach their maximum.
:
The reception quality is also indicated by the colour of the lower bar:
- red: poor reception
- orange: reasonable reception
- green: good reception
✎
If both bars fail to indicate anything at all, check the antenna connection again or
enter a different channel.
☞
Once you have successfully checked the antenna connection and the reception,
press the Exit button to restart the installation.

The DTV 6500 is switched on and off together with the ignition.
You can switch the DTV 6500 into stand-by mode or turn it back on again using the
remote control:

Press the Power button to switch the DVB-T tuner into or out of stand-by mode.
✎
You can also turn on the tuner by pressing the number keys.
Source selection - TV/AV
■ Switching between TV reception and an external AV source
☞
Press the TV/AV button to switch from TV reception to any AV device connected to
the tuner.
☞
Press the TV/AV button again to switch back to TV reception.
Channel selection
■
Channel selection up/down
☞
Press the CH+- or CH- buttons to move one place up or down in the channel list.
✎
Programme selection can also be accomplished using keys 8 and 2 on the remote
control.
■
Direct input via number keys
☞
Enter the desired channel number using the number keys.
✎
When entering channel numbers of 10 and above, you have about 1 second after
pressing one number key to complete the entry.
■
To switch back to the last channel - SWAP
☞
Press the SWAP button to switch back to the last channel selected.
☞
Press the SWAP button again to go back to the programme you were watching
before.

Selecting a channel from the channel list
☞
Press the OK or LIST buttons while in TV mode.

The current list of channels is then displayed.
☞
Using the 8 or 2 button select the required channel and confirm this with OK.

You should now see the selected programme. The list of channels remains visible.
☞
Press the OK button again to close the channel list and view the selected channel in
full-screen mode.
■
Selection of a favourites list
It is also possible to select your favourite channels from all the channels available and
collect them in a list of favourites. To create favourites lists, see under “Favourites
lists”, on page 16.
☞
Press the PRF+ or PRF- buttons to move between favourites lists.
✎
The DVB tuner always switches to the last programme selected from the favourites
list you have chosen.
✎
If no favourites list has been created, the PRF+ and PRF- buttons have no function.
■
Info display (Info window)
Every time you change to a new channel a window with information on the selected
channel is displayed for a few seconds.
✎
The length of time that this information is displayed can be set to between 3 and
10 seconds in the system settings menu. See page 19.
The information displayed is as follows:
❑ Channel number (from the current list of channels)
❑ Channel name
❑ A bar indicating how long the current programme has been showing.
❑ Symbols for encryption and the availability of sub-titles, dual-channel sound and
teletext
✎
The info window can be displayed or hidden at any time by pressing the Info
button.
☞
Press the Info button while the info window is already being displayed to view
additional information on the current programme.
☞
Press the Info button again to hide the supplementary information window again.
■
Volume control
☞
Press the VOL+ or VOL- buttons to set the volume.
✎
When the tuner is switched out of stand-by mode, the previous volume setting is re-
adopted.
■
Mute
☞
Press the Mute button to turn off sound from the tuner.
☞
Press the Mute button again or press any VOL button to turn on the sound again.

TV/Radio mode
☞
Press the TV/Radio button to switch between TV and radio reception.
✎
In TV mode you can only receive TV channels and in radio mode, only radio stations.
✎
Please note that not all countries have radio stations that transmit via DVB-T.
■
Selecting audio language and audio mode
TV and radio stations may transmit alternative sound channels for a programme (e.g.
different languages). If various sound channels are being transmitted, you can select
the one you want.
☞
Press the Audio button to bring up the menu for the audio channel and audio
mode.
☞
Select the required audio channel using the 4 or 6 keys.
☞
Press the 2 key to activate the “Audio Mode” menu option.
☞
Use the 4 or 6 key to select the required audio mode (stereo, mono, mono right,
mono left) and conform with OK.
✎
The selected audio channel and audio mode are saved for the selected channel until
they are next modified.
■
Activating and selecting sub-titles
TV stations may transmit alternative sub-titles for a programme (e.g. different
languages). If sub-titles are being transmitted, you can select the ones you want.
☞
Press the Subtitle button to call up the menu for sub-titles.
☞
Select the required sub-titles using the 4 or 6 button and confirm your selection
with OK.

The selected sub-titles are saved for the selected channel until they are next
modified.
Electronic programme guide - EPG
The “Electronic Programme Guide” is a service providing information on the
programmes of the currently selected channel. This provides a summary of the
programme currently showing and the programmes to follow along with their
contents.

The EPG service depends on the channel currently selected. Some channels do not
provide this service.

Activate EPG

Press the EPG button to open the electronic programme guide.

The electronic programme guide appears on the screen.
Channels usually provide the following information:

Brief description of the programme currently showing

Start and end times
❑
Duration of programme
❑
Preview of programmes on subsequent days (programme guide)

Selecting programme and day

Mark the required programme with the 2 or 8 keys of the remote control for
detailed information on the programme.
☞
Select the required day using the 4 or 6 keys.
✎
You can read information on programmes up to seven days in advance.
☞
Use the CH+ or CH- buttons to jump to the next or to the previous programme in
the current list of channels without leaving the electronic programme guide.
■
Exit EPG
☞
Press the EPG button again or use the Exit button to exit the electronic programme
guide.
Favourites lists
On initial installation or any subsequent channel search (see system installation,
page 19) the DVB-T tuner makes a list of all radio and TV channels it can receive. It is
possible for you to select and manage a list of favourites from this comprehensive
listing.
To manage your favourites lists, proceed as follows:

Press the Menu button.

The main menu appears.
☞
Select “Favourites lists”.
You have the following options in the “Favourites lists” menu:
New favourites list
It is possible to create up to four favourites lists each for radio and TV channels.
✎
The favourites lists for TV channels are automatically named “FAV 1” to “FAV 4”
and those for radio programmes are named “RFAV 1” to “RFAV 4”. TV and radio
programmes cannot both be managed in the same lists.
☞
Select “Create a favourite list”.
☞
Select the required type of channel (“TV” or “Radio”) from the “TV/Radio” menu

Modify favourites list

Add/remove channels
After creating a favourites list (see previous section) or whenever you select the
“Modify a favourite list” option, you can then create your own personal selection of
channels.
☞
Press PRF+ or PRF- to select the required list from those already created.
☞
Mark the channel that you want to edit in your favourites list using the 8 or 2
keys.

The possible settings that you can modify are displayed in a separate field.

Select the described functions by pressing the buttons of the appropriate colours
(red, green, yellow, blue).
☞
Press the Menu button again or use the Exit button to exit the menu. Confirm your
modifications with the OK button to save your changes to the favourites list.

Sort list
☞
Press the coloured function key for “Sort/Move” to sort the channels in the current
favourites list.
There are two possibilities:
Alphabetic sorting
☞
Press the coloured function key for
“Sort” to sort all the channels in
alphabetical order.

The channels selected in the
favourites list are placed ahead of
those not selected.
Manual sorting
☞
Press the coloured function key for “Move” to move a channel to another position
in the favourites list.
☞
Mark the channel to be moved using the 8 or 2 keys.
☞
Press OK.

The selected channel is marked with a rectangle.
☞
Select the desired place in the list to which the channel is to be moved using the 8
or 2 keys.

Press the OK button to confirm the move.

You can also move any other channels in the same way. Press the Exit button to
complete the process.

Add/delete all channels

Press the coloured function key for “Add all” to add all the available programmes
to the current favourites list or delete everything already in the list.

Teletext
The DTV 6500 is equipped with an integrated teletext decoder. This enables you to
make use of teletext on those channels which transmit the service.

TV channels, that provide teletext can be recognised by means of the teletext
symbol in the info window.

Press the Text button to display teletext on the currently selected TV channel.
☞
To call up a specific page, enter its number using the number keys.
☞
Alternatively you can use the 8 and 2 keys to mark a page number displayed by
teletext and call the page up by pressing OK.

The red, green, yellow and blue function keys enable you to call up the colour-
coded functions provided by the teletext provider and shown at the lower edge of
the screen.
✎
Pressing Text when teletext is being displayed causes the selected page to become
transparent so that the TV programme currently showing can be seen beneath it.
Press Text again to exit teletext mode.

You have the following options in the “User Preferences” menu:

Language
The “Languages” menu allows you to set the respective languages for the menus,
sound (audio) and sub-titles (when transmitted).

Select the required menu option using the 2 or 8 keys.

Select the required language using the 4 or 6 keys.
☞
Press the OK button to confirm and save the settings.

The audio and sub-title settings can be set individually for each channel and may
therefore differ from these universal settings. See “Programme selection/ select
audio language and audio mode”, page 15.

Banner time-out
The “Banner time-out” menu allows you to change the time for which the info
window is displayed. The info window is displayed for this amount of time every time
the channel is altered.

Select the required display time from between 3 and 10 seconds using the 4 or 6
keys.

Press the OK button to confirm and save the setting.

You have the following options in the “Setup” menu:

Channels installation
The “Channels installation” menu lets you search for new TV or radio channels either
automatically or manually. Newly detected channels are saved in the existing channel
lists (but not in existing favourites lists).
It is possible to conduct the following types of search:

Complete: deletes all channels from the current channel list and favourites lists and
performs an automatic search of all receivable channels.
❑
Manual: Conducts a search of a manually selected reception channel and adds any
channels detected to the current channel list.
❑
Update: Conducts an automatic search of all reception channels and adds any
channels detected to the current channel list.
■
New programs
The “New programs” menu option allows you to check whether your local TV station
is transmitting additional DVB-T programs via the frequencies already occupied by
DVB-T channels.

TV Configuration
The “TV Configuration” menu allows you to match the tuner optimally to the
connected monitor.

Select the required setting using the 4 or 6 keys.

Press the OK button to save the values you have set and exit the menu.
The following parameters can be set:

TV format
This allows you to set the appropriate screen format depending on the (TV) monitor
connected.

It is only possible to switch between different display formats if the selected
programme is transmitted in 16:9 format.

4:3 Letterbox (for 4:3 screens): Display in “Letterbox” format.
(if 16:9 programmes are shown, black strips will appear at the top and bottom of
the picture).

4:3 Pan&Scan (for 4:3 screens): Display in “PAN & SCAN” format.
(if 16:9 screens are connected, black strips will appear at the top and bottom of the
picture)
❑
16:9 (for 16:9 screens): Select this option if a 16:9 screen is connected.
■ TV standard
❑ PAL: The TV signal is output according to the PAL standard (if the connected screen
accommodates PAL format).
❑ NTSC: The TV signal is output according to the NTSC standard (if the connected
screen accommodates NTSC format).
❑ SECAM: The TV signal is output according to the SECAM standard (if the connected
screen accommodates SECAM format).

Mono
Time Settings
The “Time Settings” menu allows you to set the time difference between local time
and the received world-wide universal (UTC) time.
If the time is still displayed incorrectly even when the time setting has been made, the
DVB-T tuner may not currently be receiving a programme that is transmitting time
information.
In this event, switch to another channel and check the time again.
Reinstallation
The “Reinstallation” causes all channel and favourites lists to be deleted. All settings
are reset to factory defaults.
Then the installation routine is started. Also see “Initial operation” section, page 10.
