SURFACE PLACEMENT
Attach four rubber feet (included) on the bottom of the speaker when placed on a at surface,
such as a shelf or the top of a cabinet.
CONNECTING AND CHECKING SPEAKER PHASE
To ensure proper speaker connections, perform the following steps:
1. At each loudspeaker connection, ensure that at least 2 inches of each conductor are separated.
Strip the insulation on each conductor approximately ¼” and insert into the speaker terminals.
Ensure that there are no stray strands of wire protruding from the connectors. Observe proper
polarity (+ to + and – to – for each speaker and at the amplier).
If the speakers are connected out of phase, one loudspeakers woofer will be moving out while
the other will be moving in. This will result in sound that lacks bass and sounds thin” ordistant”
with vocals. If the sound is not right and markings on the wire to verify polarity cannot be seen,
try this simple test:
• Sit with equal distance to the speakers.
• Play some music with the receiver set to Mono.
• Listen to the bass. Is it full or thin? Listen to volume of the bass as well.
• Turn off the receiver and reverse the connections for one of the speakers.
• Repeat test at the same volume level. When the sound has the loudest and best sounding
bass and also sounds best in the vocal region, the connections are correct and in-phase.
2. Turn on the home theater receiver and calibrate all loudspeakers in the system according to the
receiver (or surround processor) manufacturers instructions.
INSTALLING AND REMOVING THE GRILLE
The ES-700 Bookshelf speakers utilize magnetic grilles. To install the grille, hold it about ½” from
the front of the speaker with equal distance to the top, bottom, left and right. Move the grille back
towards the speaker until the magnets snap it in place. To remove the grille, grasp top corners and
pull gently.
CLEANING
• Use a dampened soft cloth or paper towel to clean the cabinet. The grille is best cleaned by
brushing it off with a lint-free cloth.
IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS AND CONSIDERATIONS
• Carefully read all instructions before beginning installation, accounting for any
potential electrical issues or other obstacles.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
• Keep speakers about 2 feet away from corners and other surfaces that might interfere
with or reect sound, such as tall furniture.
RECOMMENDED AMPLIFIER POWER
• To get the best performance from your Episode ES-700-MON-6 or ES-700-LCR-5 speaker,
we recommend powering it with an amplier or receiver with a power rating between 20
and 130 Watts RMS per channel.
SPEAKER WIRE
• To connect the speaker to an amplier, high quality 14 to 16 gauge stranded speaker wire
is recommended. The wire may be connected directly to the speakers ve-way binding
posts, or terminated with either spade lugs or banana plugs.
BI-AMPING/ BI-WIRING
• If bi-amping or bi-wiring is desired, remove
the two terminal jumpers and connect speaker
wires appropriately to the terminals marked
HF (high frequencies) and LF (low frequencies).
BI-AMPING
• The highest possible performance is obtained by using separate ampliers for LF and HF.
Identical ampliers can be used; however, if using different ampliers, the following must
be observed:
- All ampliers should be phase coherent, either phase or non-phase inverting, and
have identical voltage gain.
- Each amplier for LF, and each amplier for HF, must be identical.
BI-WIRING
• The purpose of bi-wiring is to reduce interaction between woofer and midrange and/
or tweeter. Separate cables are connected to the low frequency (LF) terminal and the high
frequency (HF) terminal. Both cables are connected to the same terminal on the receiver/
amplier.
SPEAKER PLACEMENT
• For most applications, the speaker should be placed at approximately ear height –
which is about 40 to 50 inches from the oor for situations in which the listeners will be
seated. This positioning will provide the clearest sound and best dialog intelligibility.
• For Center channel applications, place the speaker directly above or below the screen,
or behind it in installations where a perforated screen is used.
• For Left and Right speaker applications, place the speakers on either side of the screen
at equal distances from the center of the screen. Ideally, the two speakers should
be spaced 6 to 12 feet apart. Left and Right speakers should also be equal to or less
than the distance (about 8 to 20 feet) away from the center of the primary listening
position. The ES-700-LCR-5 may be used vertically for left and right applications.
• When used as a Surround or Surround Back speaker, the speaker should be placed to
the side or rear of the listening area respectively. When used as a surround, the speaker
typically be placed at about 65 to 75 inches from the oor, and as far from the listening
area as the room dimensions allow – this will provide for a more enveloping surround
effect.
ADJUSTMENTS
• Refer to the manual for the receiver or amplier to make sound adjustments such as bass,
treble and balance to obtain the preferred sound, as well as surround modes and effects
when used in a surround sound system.
WALL MOUNTING
• Use the 3/8”-16 insert in the back of the
speaker to attach a bracket (not included)
for mounting the speaker on a wall. Be sure to
use a bracket capable of supporting the weight
of the speaker (13.4 lbs. for SAT, 21.4 lbs. for LCR).
Follow the instructions for the bracket for correct
installation.
• Use plastic washer (included) between bracket
and speaker.
