Chapter1.Overview
PowerManagerhelpsusersadjustpowersettingstoachievethebestbalancebetweensystemperformance
andpowersavingthroughslidercontrolorpowerplans.
PowerManagerprovidesavarietyofpower-savingfeaturesthroughtwoessentialmodes,Basicand
Advanced.BasicmodeissetasdefaultwhenusersopenPowerManagerforthersttime.Userscanspecify
thelevelofpowersavingbysimplyusingtheslider,withoutpowerplans.Advancedmodeenablesusers
tocongurepowerplansandthefullrangeoffunctionsinPowerManagertomeetspecicpowersaving
needs.PowerManagercanalsodisplaythebatteryinformation,andhelpusersmonitorthebatterystatus.
PowerManagementonacomputercansaveenergyandmoney.WhentheITadministratorenforces
powermanagementstrategyoncomputersthroughouttheentireorganization,thesavingscanbefarmore
substantial.PowerManagerisconguredbydefaulttouseitsenergyefciencyfeatures.PowerManager
alsogivestheITadministratornumerousoptionsfortailoringpowermanagementsettingstooptimize
energyefciencythroughouttheirorganizations.
Note:PowerManagerhastwodifferentversions.OneisforWindowsXPoperatingsystemsandtheotheris
forWindowsVistaandWindows7operatingsystems.IntheWindowsVistaandWindows7version,the
term"powerplan"isused.IntheWindowsXPversion,theterm"powerscheme"isused.Inthisdocument,
nodistinctionwillbemadeandtheterm"powerplan"willbeusedtocoverboth.
Features
PowerManagerincludesthefollowingfunctions:
Balancetheperformanceandpowersavingofthecomputer
PowerManagerprovidestheslidertohelpusersquicklyandeasilysetthelevelofpowertobeused.
UserscancontroltheCentralProcessingUnit(CPU)speedandthebrightnessofthecomputerdisplay
bymovingtheslider.Movingtheslidertotheleft,towardMaximumPerformance,increasestheCPU
speedandthebrightnessofthecomputerdisplaybutusesmorebatterypower.Movingthesliderto
theright,towardMaximumBatteryLife,prolongsthebatterylifewhilelimitingtheCPUspeedand
thebrightnessofthecomputerdisplay.
Whenusersmovetheslidertotheleftmostposition,thepower-savingsettingsinthepredened
MaximumPerformancepowerplanareapplied.Whenusersmovetheslidertotherightmostposition,
thepower-savingsettingsinthepredenedMaximumBatteryLifepowerplanareapplied.
View,create,delete,andswitchpowerplans
Apowerplanisacollectionofhardwareandsystemsettingsthatmanageshowthecomputerisused
andconservespower.PowerManagerpowerplansprovidemorepower-savingsettingsthanWindows
®
powerplans.OnthePowerPlantab,theusercanviewspecicsettingsinanyofthepredened
powerplans:MaximumPerformance,Timersoff(Presentation),VideoPlayback,MaximumBattery
Life,EnergySaver(whichiscalledasThinkPad
®
DefaultorEnergyStaronsomesystems),andPower
SourceOptimized.Thesepredenedpowerplansaredesignedtomeettheneedsofmostpeople.Ifthe
predenedpowerplansdonotmeetyourneeds,theCreatePowerPlanwizardcanhelpyoucreateyour
owncustompowerplans.YoucaneasilyswitchbetweenpowerplansbyclickingtheBatteryGauge
icononthetaskbarandusingtheslidertoapplyapredenedpowerplan,orbypressingtheF3+Fnkeys
toselectapowerplanfromtheChoosePowerPlanmenu.
Viewbatteryinformation
PowerManagerdisplaysbatteryinformationandgeneralbatterystatus,suchasremainingtime,remaining
capacity,chargeanddischargestatus,cyclecountandsoon.Thebatteryhealthindicatorcanindicate
thebatteryhealthconditionsinthreecolors:green(ingoodcondition),yellow(infaircondition),andred

(inpoorcondition).Whenthebatteryhasencounteredanerror,anerrormessageorballoonmessagewill
displayinthenoticationarea.
Maximizebatterylifespan
Ifyouprimarilyusethecomputerwithanattachedacpoweradapterandonlyinfrequentlyusebattery
power,youcanincreasethelifespanofthebatterybychangingthechargethresholds.Thisallowsyou
toreducethenumberofchargecyclesbylettingthebatterydischargetoalowerpercentagebeforeit
beginstocharge.Y oucanchangethebatterychargethresholdsontheBatterytab.
Youcanalsosetthemaximumchargevaluetobelow100%.Thisoptionisusefultoprolongthelifespan
ofthebatteriesthatyoudonotusefrequently,becauseitisrecommendedtostorebatterieswithless
chargeratherthanfullcharge.
RemotelycongurePowerManageranddeploypowerplan
PowerManagerenablesanITadministratortocongurePowerManageranddeployapowerplanusing
ActiveDirectory.TheITadministratorcanselectanactivepowerplanintheclientcomputers,inhibit
theuser'sabilitytoswitchbetweenpowerplans,selectaspecicpowerplan,orcreateapowerplan.
Forexample,theITadministratorcandisabletheMaximumPerformancepowerplananduserscannot
selectit.
Also,theITadministratorcanconguresettingsfortheGeneralSettingpolicies,PowerPlan(Scheme)
Deploymentspolicies,GlobalPowerSettingspolicies,andBatteryMaintenancepolicy.

Considerationsforinstallation
VariousfunctionsinPowerManagerhavedependencyonhardware,BIOS,drivers,andotherThinkVantage
Technologies(TVTs).Whenafunctionisnotsupportedonaclientcomputer,thefunctionishiddeninPower
Manager.Installingthelatestversionofthefollowingsoftwareisstronglyrecommendedtoenablethefull
rangeoffunctionsinPowerManager.

1.StarttheWindowsXP ,WindowsVista

2.ExtractthePowerManagersoftwarepackagetotheharddiskdrive.Forexample:

3.Dependingontheoperatingsystem,dooneofthefollowing:

openthecommandpromptwindow.

4.InstallPowerManagersilentlywithadefaultpathforinstallationlogbyusingthefollowingcommandline:

ToinstallPowerManagerinteractively,dothefollowing:
1.StarttheWindowsXP,WindowsVista,orWindows7operatingsystem,andthenloginwith
administrativeprivileges.
2.Double-clickthePowerManagersoftwarepackage.TheReadytoInstallwindowopens.
3.IntheSelectDestinationLocationwindow,clickNext.Ifyouwouldliketoselectadifferentfolder,
clickBrowse.
4.IntheReadytoInstallwindow,clickInstall.Allthenecessaryleswillbeextractedtothefolder
selectedinstep3.

5.MakesurethatyouhaveselectedtheInstallThinkVantagePowerManagernowoptionandclick
Finish.
6.Followtheinstructionsonthescreentocompleteinstallationandrestartthecomputer.

users,domains,securitypolicies,andanytypeofuser-denedobjects.ThemechanismisknownasGroup
PolicyandAdministrativeTemplate(ADMorADMX)les.WithGroupPolicyandADMorADMXles,IT
administratorsdenesettingsthatcanbeappliedtocomputersorusersinthedomain.

WindowsVistaandWindows7operatingsystems,whichcanbeusedwithGroupPolicyEditortosetthe

custompowerplansanddeploythosepowerplans.TheITadministratorneedstocongureeverypolicy
underthiscongurationitem.PolicysettingsinthePowerPlanDeploymentscongurationitemcannotbe
usedtoeditexistingpowerplansonclientcomputers.Onceapowerplanisdeployed,theITadministrator
cannoteditthepowerplanfromtheserverside.Todeployanewpowerplan,theITadministratorneedsto
congureapowerplanwithadifferentpowerplanname.
