CHAPTER 1
Introduction
1.1 Overview
The WAH1004 is a USB 2.0 3G modem that supports HSPA+ (Evolved High-Speed Packet Access)
3G network for users on-the-go. You can enjoy wireless broadband connection anytime, anywhere
within 3G coverage, without additional wiring. The WAH1004 is backward compatible to GSM/
HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE/GPRS, allowing you to connect to the Internet through mobile broadband
connection from around the world.
Optionally, you can insert a micro SD card up to 32GB in size to use the WAH1004 as a portal
storage device at the same time.
1.2 Ways to Manage the WAH1004
You can use the following way to manage the WAH1004.
ZyXEL 3G Modem Utility
Follow the instructions in the Quick Start Guide to install the utility.

1.3 Hardware Connections
See your Quick Start Guide for information on making hardware connections. You need to insert a
SIM card before you can use the WAH1004.
1.4 LED
The LED of your WAH1004 indicates whether it is currently connected to a 2G or 3G network
(green). The LED turns red and blinks if there is no SIM card inserted or the WAH1004 is not
connected to a mobile network. The LED is off if the WAH1004 is not attached properly or the driver
is not installed.

2.1 Overview
After you attach the WAH1004 to your computer and install the driver successfully, the WAH1004
automatically connects to an available mobile network using the default profile settings. You can
install and use the ZyXEL 3G Modem utility to change the PIN code, check the connection status,
configure the connection profile(s), send text messages, and manage the contact list.
2.2 Accessing the Utility
After you install the utility, double-click the ZyXEL 3G Modem icon in the system tray or on the
desktop to open the utility. The ZyXEL 3G Modem utility screens are similar in all Microsoft
Windows versions. Screens for Windows 7 are shown.

2.3 Utility Screen Summary

2.3.1 Menu Bar
The menu bar displays only when you select to show it using the menu icon (see Menu Icon on page
11).

Click Help > About to view the version number of the ZyXEL 3G Modem utility you installed.

2.3.2 Navigation Panel
Use the menu items on the navigation panel to open screens to configure WAH1004 features. The
following sections introduce the WAH1004’s navigation panel menus and their screens.

Connection
The Connection screen shows whether the WAH1004 is connected to a mobile network. It also
shows the mobile data connection time and traffic statistics.
Exit Click this to close the utility.
Operation Connection
Management
Click this to go to the Connection screen. See Section 2.3.2 on page 10.
Text Message Click this to go to the Text Message screen. See Section 2.3.2 on page
10.
Contacts Click this to go to the Contacts screen. See Section 2.3.2 on page 10.
Tools PIN
Management
Click this to enable, disable, modify, verify or unlock a PIN code.
Connection
Profile
Click this to open the Options > Profile Management > Connection
Profile screen where you can create a new profile or manage an existing
profile.
Options Click this to open the Options screens where you can configure
advanced settings.
Help Help Click this to open the embedded User’s Guide.
About Click this to display basic information about the utility.

Text Message
Use the Text Message screens to manage the text messages.
Contacts
Use the Contacts screens to manage the address book contacts.
Menu Icon
Click the menu icon ( ) on the right side of the utility screen to configure advanced settings
and/or display the menu bar. The menus you see from the drop-down list are the same as the ones
on the menu bar (see Section 2.3.1 on page 9).

Local View and manage the messages stored in the computer where the utility is installed.
Inbox View and manage the mesages you received.
Outbox View and manage the mesages you sent.
Draft View and manage the mesage that is saved as a draft.
Recycle View and manage the mesages you deleted and are now in the temporary recycle bin.
U(SIM)
Storage View and manage the mesages stored in the WAH1004’s SIM card.

2.3.3 Status Bar
The bar at the bottom of the screen displays the signal strength, system information and
connection status.

The following table describes the labels or icons in the status bar.

This shows the current signal strength.
The more bars that display, the stronger the signal strength.
No device The WAH1004 is not attached to the computer where the utility is installed or the
WAH1004 cannot be detected by the utility.

The system is checking whether the SIM card is enabled.
PIN blocked The PIN code you entered for the SIM card is not correct.
If the SIM card is blocked by your ISP. Get a PUK code from the ISP to enable the SIM card.
Initializing The WAH1004 is in the process of starting up.
Network
searching
The WAH1004 is looking for an available mobile network.
No service There is no suitable mobile network.
No (U)SIM card There is no SIM card inserted in the WAH1004 or the WAH1004 cannot detect the SIM
card.
Invalid (U)SIM
card
The inserted SIM card is not valid.
The computer with the WAH1004 installed is not connected to the Internet.
New message There are new SMS (Short Message Service) text messages.
Message full The SIM card’s SMS box is full.

Operation Screens
3.1 Connection
Use this screen to look at the connection status and packet statistics. To access this screen, click
the Connection icon or click Operation > Connection Management from the menu bar.

Disconnect
Click Connect to establish a connection to a mobile data network.
Click Disconnect to drop a connection to a mobile data network.
Connection Time This field displays how long the mobile data connection has been up.
Downloaded This field displays the number of packets received by the WAH1004 through the mobile
data connection since it was last connected.

3.2 Text Message
Use this screen to manage your SMS text messages. To access this screen, click the Text Message
icon or click Operation > Text Message from the menu bar. You can select to manage the text
messages you received (Inbox), sent (Outbox), save as a draft (Draft) or deleted (Recycle). To
manage the text massages stored in the SIM card, click the Storage folder under (U)SIM at the
left panel.

Uploaded This field displays the number of packets transmitted from the WAH1004 through the
mobile data connection since it was last connected.
Total This field displays the total number of packets received and sent by the WAH1004 through
the mobile data connection since it was last connected.
Downlink rate This field displays the current reception speed, in kilobytes per second.
Uplink rate This field displays the current transmission speed, in kilobyte per second.

3.2.1 New Text Message
Click the New icon in the Text Message screen to create a new message.

Search Click this to display a text box where you can enter a contact’s name to look for messages
sent or received by the specified contact.
New Click this to create and send a new text message.
Edit Select a message and click this to change the message contact and/or content.
Delete Select a message from the Inbox, Outbox or Draft folder and click this to move the
selected message to the Recycle bin.
Note: If you delete a message in the Recycle bin, the message will be deleted permanently.
Note: You can use the [Shift] or [Ctrl] key on your keyboard to select multiple entries to
remove them.
Send Select a message and click this to send the selected message.
Note: If the message fails to be delivered, a draft of the message wil be saved in the Draft
folder.
Reply Select a message and click this to send a response to the selected message.
Forward Select a message and click this to forward the selected message to other contacts.
Name<Number> This shows the contact’s name or phone number in the message.
Content This shows the content of the message.
Date/Time This shows the date and time when the message is sent, received, saved as a draft or
deleted.

3.3 Contacts
Use this screen to manage your SMS text messages. To access this screen, click the Contacts icon
or click Operation > Contacts from the menu bar. You can select to add and store the contacts in
the computer or in the SIM card.

Send to... Click the button to open the Select contacts screen to select a pre-configured contact, or
manually enter a phone number to which you want to sent the message.
Note: You can add up to 100 recipients to a message.
Enter the content of the message.
Send Click this to send the message immediately.
Save Click this to save the message as a draft.
Exit Click this to close the screen without saving.

3.3.1 New Contact
Click the New icon in the Contacts screen to create a new Contacts.

Search Click this to display a text box where you can enter a contact’s name or phone number to
display the information of the contact(s) that matches the search criteria.
New Click this to create a new contact.
Edit Select a contact and click this to change the contact name or phone number.
Delete Select a contact and click this to remove the selected contact.
Note: You can use the [Shift] or [Ctrl] key on your keyboard to select multiple entries to
remove them.
Send SMS Select a contact and click this to display the New text message screen (see Section 3.2.1
on page 15), where you can compose and send a message to the selected contact.
Name This shows the name of the contact.
Mobile This shows the phone number of the contact

Name Enter the descriptive name of the contact. You can enter up to 40 characters for a contact
stored in the computer. The maximum number of characters allowed for a contact stored in
the SIM card varies depending on the inserted SIM card.
Mobile Enter the mobile phone number of the contact.
OK Click this to save the changes.
Cancel Click this to close the screen without saving.

Tools Screens
4.1 PIN Management
Click Tools > PIN Management > Enable PIN from the menu bar to turn on PIN code
authentication. A PIN (Personal Identification Number) code is a key to a SIM card. Without the PIN
code, you cannot use the SIM card. This screen also shows how many times (3 by default) you can
enter the PIN code.
Note: If you enter the PIN code incorrectly three times, the SIM card will be blocked by
your ISP and you cannot use the account to access the Internet. You will need to
contact your ISP to get a PUK code.
Click Tools > PIN Management > Disable PIN from the menu bar to turn off PIN code
authentication. .

Click Tools > PIN Management > Modify PIN from the menu bar to change the existing PIN
code for the inserted SIM card.
Click Tools > PIN Management > Verify PIN from the menu bar to enter the PIN code for the
inserted SIM card if PIN authentication is enabled on the SIM card. Check with your service provider
for the correct PIN code.
4.2 Connection Profile
Click Tools > Connection Profile from the menu bar to open the Connection configuration
screen, where you can create a new connection with a different APN, user name or password, or
modify or remove an existing profile.

Profile Name If you click New to create a new profile, enter a desriptive name for the profile.
If you have configured a profile or clicked Import to add the pre-defined profile(s) to the
list, this shows the name of the profile(s) you can select to edit, delete or use it as the
default profile.
Parameter
APN Enter the Access Point Name (APN) provided by your service provider. Connections with
different APNs may provide different services (such as Internet access or MMS (Multi-Media
Messaging Service)) and charging method.
You can enter up to 64 printable ASCII characters. Spaces are allowed.
Access number Enter the phone number (dial string) used to dial up a connection to your service provider’s
base station. Your ISP should provide the phone number.
For example, *99# is the dial string to establish a GPRS or 3G connection in Taiwan.
User name Type the user name (of up to 64 printable ASCII characters) given to you by your service
provider.
Password Type the password (of up to 64 printable ASCII characters) associated with the user name
above.
Authentication
Type
The WAH1004 supports PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) and CHAP (Challenge
Handshake Authentication Protocol). CHAP is more secure than PAP; however, PAP is
readily available on more platforms.
Select an authentication protocol (CHAP or PAP) or None. Contact your service provider
for the correct authentication type.
New Click this button to create a new profile.
Delete Click this button to remove the selected profile.
Edit Click this button to change the settings of the selected profile.
