Proper use
The TRUMPF hand shears S420-0 are an electrically
operated hand machine
used for the chip-free cutting and tri mming of
plate-shaped workpieces made of material such
as aluminium, plastic, etc.
to produce straight or curved outer edges and
inside cutouts
to cut along a scribed line
to part coils (in connection with a machine casing,
optional)
Safety instructions
The machine can only be operated safely if
you have read and understood both the
operating and safety instructions (red print)
and follow these instructions carefully.
The unit may only be used with a chip
deflector (hand protection).
The unit must not be used when wet or in a
wet area.
Sockets must be equipped with fault-current
circuit breakers. Consult your electrician for
further information.
Check the unit, cable and plug before each
use.
Have all damaged parts repaired by an expert.
Always wear safety glasses, ear
protection, protective gloves and
proper footwear when working with the
machine.
Ensure that the unit is off before inserting the plug
in the socket. Pull out the mains plug after use.
Remove the plug from the socket before carrying
out any work on the machine. Never carry the unit
by the cable.
Always guide the cable back away from the unit.
Use only original TRUMPF accessories.
Before initial use
1. Read the chapter on safety.
Safety instructions
2. Mount the handle (the handle is enclosed
separately with the new machine).
3.
Check whether the installed cutters are
suitable for the material that is to be
machined. Use special cutters for high-
tensile sheets (>400 N/mm2)!
Cutter selection
4. Turn, sharpen or replace blunt cutters
Replacing cutters
Sharpening cutters
5. Check whether the cutting clearance is
suitable for the sheet thickness that is to be
machined.
Cutting clearance
6. The mains voltage must correspond to the
specifications on the machine type plate.
Machines with 230 V may also be
connected to 220 V.
Machines with 115
V may also be
connected to 110 V.
Operating instructions
Check the tools for wear every hour.
Never work with blunt tools,
as this could otherwise overload the machine!
Turning the unit on and off
Turning on the unit: Push the on/off switch forward.
Turning off the unit: Push the on/off switch to the
rear.
12 GB S 420 - 0 E251.doc
The machine is equipped with an elec-
tronic starting current limiter. Do not, the-
refore, begin processing the workpiece
until after the machine has been turned
on and has reached maximum speed!
The unit could switch off prematurely if
electromagnetic interference acts upon it
for a long time. Once the interference
dies away the unit will continue to work.
Guide the unit towards the sheet surface at an angle
of 80° to 90° (figure).
Fig. 10116
Sharp cutters always cut well and are easy on the
machine. Always turn or replace the cutters in good
time.
Cutting radii: Do not tilt the machine and work with
minimal feed.
Work upside down with the fixed blade carrier pointing
upward when cutting along the edge, particularly
during precision cutting along a scribed line.
Cutter selection
All cutters have 2 cutting edges. Cutters may be
selected from the following table according to the
thickness, tensile strength and type of workpiece that
is to be machined:
Cutters with type markings Fig. 10098

* The fixed cutter blade for material strengths of up
to 400 N/mm² does not have a special type
marking.
( ) Can be used, but subject to increased wear!
Warning!
If the cutter or combination of cutters is not properly
selected according to the table
it may be impossible to machine thin sheets under
certain circumstances,
the individual tools may be overloaded when
machining thick sheets.
Risk of fracture!
It is therefore urgently recommended that tools be
combined according to the specifications found in the
table.

Replacing cutters
Pull the plug out of the socket.
Turn or replace moving cutter blade.
Unscrew the fastening screw (11).
Pull the moving cutter blade (7) out of the bracket,
turn it 180° and reassemble (or mount a new
cutter).
Screw in and tighten fastening screw (11).
Turn or replace fixed cutter blade.
Unscrew the fastening screw (1).
Turn the fixed cutter blade (5) 180° and retighten
the fastening screw (1).
Warning: Note cutting clearance!
Cutting clearance
Cutting clearance
Cutting clearance "a" should ideally be
0.2 x the sheet thickness to be cut
Example:
Sheet thickness "s" (mm) 1.5 2.0 3.0 4.0
Cutter distance = cutting
clearance "a" (mm) 0.3 0.4 0.6 0.8
Adjusting the cutting clearance
Ensure that the moving cutter blade (7) is in lower
dead centre position (by lightly "tapping" on the
switch several times).
Pull the plug out of the socket!
Loosely fasten the fixed cutter blade (5) with the
fastening screw (1).
Adjust the fixed cutter blade (5) to the desired
cutting clearance using the adjusting screw (2)
(check with feeler gauge).
Tighten fastening screw (1).
Tighten the adjusting screw (2) slightly.

Sharpening cutters
The m o v i n g c u t t e r b l a d e must not be
resharpened!
The f i x e d c u t t e r b l a d e may be
resharpened by max. 2 mm (2 x 1 mm).
Please note the following when sharpening the fixed
cutter blade:
Maintain the correct angle (45°, 88°). The angle
can be checked using the supplied grinding
gauge.
Fig. 10101
Provide sufficient cooling.
Touch up the cutting edge with a fine oil stone.
Ensure that the length is at least 26 mm or
13 mm. Shorter fixed cutter blades must be
replaced.
Maintenance
Remove the plug from the socket before
carrying out any work on the machine!
Vents
Keep the unit and the vents clean.

Changing carbon brushes
The machine will stop if the brushes are worn.
Carbon brush replacement and all other repair work is
to be carried out by an expert!
Repairs
Electric tools conform to the applicable
safety regulations. Repairs may only be
carried out by qualified electricians in order
to prevent unnecessary accidents.
If the machine has been disassembled,
ensure that the shaft (14) is tightened with a
tightening torque of 25Nm when
reassembling the unit.

Coil casing (optional)
A special casing was developed for the S420-0 that is
used primarily in heavy industry and in the coil
industry. The casing has several advantages, e.g.:
Machine protection (plastic parts).
The machine can also be operated when wearing
thick gloves.
The machine can be used at relatively high
temperatures (mill trains!).
An additional person can help the operator
produce a sufficient amount of feed power using
the supplied traction eyelet (3) and a traction rope.
