Junos
®
Space is an open, extensible network platform for developing
and hosting applications that reduce cost and complexity and open your network to new
business opportunities.
One of the core members of the Junos platform, Junos Space uses the same design
principles and open systems approach of the Junos operating system to enable
programmability at the network application layer.
Junos Space is a multipurpose application platform designed to be simple, smart and open.
Smart—the core platform provides network abstractions and automation to enable
smart applications, and includes best practices to automate repetitive tasks, minimize
user input, and scale services.
Simple—the platform interface is business-intent oriented, not technology-centric, with
the system guiding the user rather than the other way around.
Open—the platform architecture is open and explicitly designed to enable partners to
build and deploy smart, simple and easy-to-use applications.

Junos Space is underpinned by a programmable application
environment, a powerful runtime environment, and a Web 2.0 GUI.
Customizable Application Environment: Junos Space is based
on a Service Oriented Architecture. Junos Space is a multipurpose
environment that enables you to create applications for
productivity, collaboration an network operations. It provides a
complete, rapid application development framework that includes
a common infrastructure, a toolkit with pre-built core services that
work consistently across Juniper-developed network operations,
applications, and widgets to allow easy user interface prototyping
and standards-based APIs for third-party application integration.
Junos Space is a customizable platform that allows users to
extend the core functionality to meet specific business needs.
Users can also utilize the platform’s core services to create mash-
ups for quick deployment and monetization of applications.

Scalable and Resilient Runtime Environment: Architected to
provide full visibility and control of your network resources, Junos
Space enables you to enhance the performance of your network.
Junos Space is implemented as a scalable fabric of physical or
virtual appliances that work collaboratively to help you optimize
network resiliency and resource utilization. You can expand or
contract the fabric by simply adding or deleting nodes, and the
system automatically starts applications and services on active
nodes. Each node is fully utilized and the nodes work together to
provide automated resource management.
The Junos Space runtime platform is multi-tenant and enables
hot-pluggable applications. Juniper or third-party applications
can be added by simply downloading them onto the platform, and
the system automatically deploys the applications throughout
the fabric, including deploying code to clients. Using the Device
Management Interface (DMI) included with the platform, you
can also do hot-pluggable device additions and updates, and in-
service application and device upgrades to enable you to improve
service availability and business continuity.

Easy User Experience: Junos Space provides a Web 2.0 GUI and is
designed to simplify the way you interact with the system. It is based
on a task-oriented paradigm and uses persona-based workflows to
help you do your administrative tasks quickly and eciently.
Embedded Network Operation Applications
Junos Space provides multiple management and infrastructure
applications within its platform, which allow for total
management of your Juniper resources and assets, including
comprehensive inventory management, full configuration of
devices and interfaces, automated management and deployment
of software images and event-driven fault management. These
platform applications are embedded within the core product. In
conjunction with multiple add-on applications, users can control
any part of their environment.

Junos Space will support a full portfolio of Juniper-developed
applications for automating network infrastructure and
operations. The first three applications available today include
the Juniper Networks Ethernet Activator for point-and-click
provisioning of point-to-point and multipoint-to-multipoint MPLS
VPNs, Juniper Networks Route Insight Manager to enable end-to-
end network planning, simulation, and diagnostics, and Juniper
Networks Service Now, an in-device failure monitoring tool for
lights off incident creation to speed problem resolution.

Juniper will continue to expand its network operations portfolio
with applications to automate the management of campus,
data center, security, and cloud infrastructures. Other planned
Juniper-developed applications will include Campus Builder,
an application to quickly design and deploy campus network
topologies and services, Security Designer, an application to
quickly and easily design, test and deploy rich security policies
across entire network infrastructures and Cloud Creator to design
and deploy various cloud services and infrastructures like virtual
fabrics, platform-as-a-service and software-as-a-service.
Third-Party Developer Applications
Third parties and enterprises that build applications on top of the
Junos Space platform enjoy many advantages in addition to the
development environment. These include the reuse of the Junos
Space runtime fabric for better utilization of processing resources,
the security of communication and data persistence, and the
usability and flexibility of the Web UI.
Productivity Applications
Junos Space helps third-party developers create applications such
as smart metering aggregation for remote metering, collection,
and aggregation to enable endpoint rollout and monitoring that
can be offered as a managed service or a standalone application.
Junos Space also supports the development of online Web
applications for personal and workplace productivity, ormy
network” applications to synchronize bookmarks, contacts,
passwords, etc., across devices and identities.
Collaboration Applications
Juniper’s developers and partners can leverage Junos Space to
build applications like SMS multicast for private branded white
box twitter applications for user communities, or online/remote
meeting tools for secure meetings and collaboration across
distributed sites.

Ordering Information
When ordering Junos Space, three items are required: the number
and type (either virtual or physical) of appliances required for the
fabric, the device points required to manage the devices in the
network, and any higher-level applications and their SKUs. Devices
within Junos Space are separated into five tiers, from smallest
to largest; to simplify ordering, the platform uses device points,
with each class of device worth a certain number of points. When
ordering, the device points are grouped into bundles, for ease of
ordering. The SKUs are as follows:
