Information and advice
Safety first!
Energy Save:
Use the unit in the recommended room size (up to 16m
2
).
Locate the unit where furniture cannot obstruct the air flow.
Keep blinds/curtains closed during the sunniest part of the day.
Keep the filters clean.
Keep doors and windows closed to keep cool air in and warm air out.
If the air conditioner is knocked over during use, turn
off the unit and unplug from the mains supply
immediately.
Your air conditioner should be used in such a way
that it is protected from moisture. e.g. condensation,
splashed water, etc. Do not place or store your air
conditioner where it can fall or be pulled into water
or any other liquid. Unplug immediately.
Do not operate your air conditioner in a wet room
such as a bathroom or laundry room.
Do not touch the unit with wet or damp hands or
when barefoot.
Do not press the buttons on the control panel with
anything other than your fingers.
Always transport your air conditioner in a vertical
position and stand on a stable, level surface during
use. Do not allow your air conditioner to sit on top of
the mains lead.
Do not remove any fixed covers. Never use this
appliance if it is not working properly, or if it has
been dropped or damaged.
Never use the plug to start and stop the unit. Always
use the switch on the control panel.
Turn off the product when not in use.
Always contact a qualified person to carry out
repairs. If the supply cord is damaged it must be
repaired by a qualified repairer.
Do not cover or obstruct the inlet or outlet grilles.
Do not use hazardous chemicals to clean or come into
contact with the unit. Do not use the unit in the
presence of inflammable substances or vapour such
as alcohol, insecticides, petrol, etc.
Do not allow children to operate the unit
unsupervised.
Never use the unit without the filter.
Do not use this product for functions other than those
described in this instruction manual.
Keep an air path of at least 50cm all around the unit
from walls, furniture and curtains.
Do not place any objects on top of the air conditioner.
Carlton AC5500v2.qxd 21/03/02 16:22 Page 3
Do not use any other
accessories other than
those supplied.
Always try to use the
exhaust hose at its
shortest length.
Take care not to bow
or bend the middle of
the exhaust hose as this
will trap hot air and
may cause the unit to
shut down.
i
Information
Attach exhaust hose
1. Screw the rounded ends of
accessory parts 9 onto both
ends of the exhaust hose.
2. Fit the rectangular end of
accessory part 9 to the back of
the unit.
Extracting hot air to the outside
can be achieved by the
following methods:
1. Using foam strips
Open window and fit foam piece
(with gap) to the most favourable
position.
Fit exhaust pipe into gap and fit
part 12 to the other side. This will
keep the exhaust pipe in place.
2. Permanent connection
Make a hole to fit part 10 into
the window/wall and fit part 10
with the flat surface inside the
house. Screw the exhaust pipe
onto part 10. When not in use,
remove the exhaust pipe and fit
the cap.
(Warning: Take care when
cutting the hole, especially
if made into glass - we
recommend this is done by
a professional.)
An alternative is to place hose
out of window with as little open
space as possible. However this
will not be as effective as the
two methods suggested above.
Connecting your air conditioner
This unit is portable and can be moved from room to room.

Draining water
Before removing the water
container, wait a few
minutes to allow the water
to finish draining into the water
container.

forward.
When the water tank is full it will need to be emptied
During the cooling
process, some water
will be extracted from
the air into the unit.
When the water inside

Maintenance
Cleaning the housing
Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe
the body clean.
Never use aggressive chemicals,
gasoline, detergents, chemically
treated cloths, or other cleansing
solutions. These could all
possibly damage the unit.
Cleaning the filter
This air conditioner features an
advance filtration system. Two filters
in the front clean and deodorise the
air and there is a third filter at the
back designed to keep dirt away
from the warm side of the unit that
discharges outdoors through the
exhaust duct.
At the front there is a replaceable,
activated carbon filter to remove
odours and a washable dust filter to
purify the air. It is recommended to
clean the filters at regular intervals
depending upon how frequently the
unit is used, at least every 3
months.
To do this, first remove the water
tank. Pull down and remove the
filter-housing unit that incorporates
both filters. Push the filter locks on
either side of the filter housing and
remove the filter frame. Take both
filters out of the housing unit. The
dust filter can be washed under
running water but must be dried
before inserting it back into the unit.
The carbon filter cannot be washed
but it can be vacuum cleaned. It is
recommended to replace the
carbon filter every 12 months,
depending on how frequently the
unit is used.(For replacement filters
contact Partmaster Direct, see above.)
At the back of the unit there is a
washable filter. To clean this,
remove the two screws on the sides
of the grill. Remove the grill and
vacuum or wash the filter mesh.
Make sure it is dry before
replacing. This task can be
undertaken about once every 6
months.
End of season storage
Unplug the unit.
Remove, empty and replace the
water tank.
Clean or change the filters.
In a warm place, turn on the unit
in ventilation mode (LOW or
HIGH FAN mode) for a couple
of hours, so the inside can dry
out completely.
It is recommended that the unit
be put back into the original
carton for storage.
(Do not stack heavy objects on
top of the unit.)
Before cleaning, ALWAYS unplug the unit from the mains.
To prolong the
compressor’s life, always
wait for at least 3
minutes after switching
the unit off, before
attempting to switch
back on again.
When your air
conditioner is not in use,
keep the power cord
tidy by wrapping it
around the projection on
the back of the unit.

Troubleshooting & specifications
The machine doesn’t run
Is the machine plugged in and
the mains power supply on?
Is the ‘full water’ indicator on?
If
so empty the condensed water.
Is the room temperature within
the working range of the unit
(18
0
C - 32
0
C)?
Make sure neither the timer or
speed settings are selected to ‘off’.
The machine is very noisy
Is the floor underneath the
machine uneven?
Make sure all
four casters are positioned flat
against the floor.
The compressor doesn’t run
It is possible that the overheat
protection of the compressor is
on?
Turn the unit off. Make sure
the unit is not near a heat source
and the air flow is not restricted.
Leave for a few minutes and turn
on again. If this problem
reoccurs on a regular basis
consult a repair specialist.
The machine is running but
is not cooling the room
Is the sun shining directly into the
room?
If so, close the curtain.
Are too many windows or doors
open?
Are there too many people in
the room ?
Is there something in the room
producing lots of heat?
The machine is on, but is
doing very little
Are the filters
dusty/contaminated?
Is the air intake or output
blocked up?
Is the room temperature below
your selected temperature?
Other abnormal conditions
Disconnect the fan from the wall
and consult a repair specialist.
