1 Introduction
EtherCAT is an industrial real-time Ethernet bus. It relies on the standard Ethernet physical layer and re-
quires dedicated interface ICs – so-called EtherCAT Slave Controllers (ESC) – to handle the Datalink layer
EtherCAT protocol.
TRINAMIC’s TMC8462-BA ESC was EOL-ed and is replaced with the TMC8462A-BA (A-version).
This migration guide lists the differences of the non-A and A-version of TRINAMIC’s EtherCAT Slave Con-
troller Chip (ESC) TMC8462-BA and TMC8462A-BA and how to successfully migrate to the A-version TMC8462A-
BA.
2 Changes
The following changes apply from TMC8462-BA to TMC8462A-BA:
•Revision field of IC label changes to “A”: TMC8462-BA to TM8462A-BA
•Corrected Case 1 in the Errata of TMC8462-BA Datasheet V1.6:
–Fix: The PHY configuration was changed to the proper mode setting. The LINK/ACT LEDs and
link indicator signal will not show a start-up pulse anymore and will thus not increase link-loss
counters unnecessarily.
•ESD ratings improved/updated: HBM 2.5kV, CDM 750V
•Master clock input changes from 100MHz to 25MHz
•Pin name L3 changes from REF_CLK100_IN to REF_CLK25_IN
•TMC8462A-BA requires pin TSTCLK_SELECT connected to GND for standard operation
•Temperature ratings corrected based on PHY specs
