5.3 OPERATING PROCEDURES_________________________________________________
1. Under no circumstances should the tractor be started
without the operator seated on the unit.
2. Do not operate unit or attachments with loose,
damaged or missing components. Whenever
possible mow when grass is dry.
3. Never use the unit in or near an area where there
may be explosive dust or fumes. The electrical
system of this unit can produce sparks that may
ignite explosive materials.
4. First mow in a test area to become thoroughly
familiar with the operation of the unit and control
levers.
Never operate the reels unless they are mowing
grass. Heat will develop between the bedknife and
reel and damage the cutting edge.
5. Study the area to determine the best and safest
operating procedure. Consider the height of the
grass, type of terrain, and condition of the surface.
Each condition will require certain adjustments or
precautions.
6. Never direct discharge of material toward
bystanders, nor allow anyone near the machine
while in operation. The owner/operator is
responsible for injuries inflicted to bystanders and/or
damage to their property.
7. Use discretion when mowing near gravel areas
(roadway, parking areas, cart paths, etc.). Stones
discharged from the implement may cause serious
injuries to bystanders and/or damage the
equipment.
8. Always turn reel switch off to stop blades when not
mowing.
9. Disengage the drive motors and raise the reels
when crossing paths or roadways. Look out for
traffic.
10. Stop and inspect the equipment for damage
immediately after striking an obstruction or if the
machine begins to vibrate abnormally. Have the
equipment repaired before resuming operation.
.
11. Slow down and use extra care on hillsides. Read
Section 5.10. Use caution when operating near drop
offs.
12. Look behind and down before backing up to be sure
the path is clear. Use care when approaching blind
corners, shrubs, tress or other objects that may
obscure vision.
13. Never use your hands to clean cutting units. Use a
brush to remove grass clippings from blades.
Blades are extremely sharp and can cause serious
injuries. DO NOT place hands or feet beneath unit
at any time.
14. Make sure all shields and guards are in place to
prevent possible injury.
15. Never carry any passengers. This unit is designed
to carry only the operator, in the seat provided by

OPERATION 5
11
5.4 PRE-OPERATION CHECK LIST ______________________________________________
1. Make sure the batteries are fully charged and that
the charger has been disconnected from the unit
(unit will not operate while the charger is connected).
2. Verify that all battery connections are tight.
3. Check bedknife and reel blades for nicks, damage
and sharpness.
4. Check the reel to bedknife adjustment.
5. Check tire pressure - 12 PSI (83kPa) front, 15 PSI
(103kPa) rear.
6. Visually inspect the unit for loose or broken parts.
5.5 OPERATING TIPS FOR MAXIMUM RANGE _____________________________________
The operating characteristics of the E–Plex mower differ
greatly from those of a gasoline powered unit. The
following is a list of operating procedures and
maintenance tips that will help you achieve maximum
productivity from each charge.
There are three things that should be checked before
driving the unit. Any one of the three could be
responsible for unnecessary drain on the batteries.
1. Tire pressure, maintain at 12 PSI (83kPa) front,
15 PSI (103kPa) rear.
2. Proper adjustment of the bedknife to reel.
3. Make sure the park brake is released.
There are other physical or mechanical conditions that
will affect the range of an E–Plex mower.
1. Temperature affects operating range. The best range
will be achieved at temperatures above 85° F (29°C).
Lower temperatures will reduce range proportionally.
2. Improperly adjusted brakes or malfunctioning drive
train components can reduce range by increasing
the load on the motor.
3. Malfunctioning charger.
4. Improperly maintained batteries. Keeping the
electrolyte at the proper level and keeping the
batteries clean and free of corrosion help maintain
the range of the unit and increase battery life.
5. Loose battery terminal connections and loose or
damaged wires can create unnecessary resistance
in the circuit that affects performance and range.
The manner in which the unit is operated also has a
major affect on how the unit performs. Training operators
to use conservative operating techniques should
increase the range and productivity of the unit.
1. Avoid full–throttle acceleration. Fast starts reduce
range by increasing battery energy consumption.
2. Avoid long periods of travel at top speed. When
transporting from green to green, gentle
acceleration and reasonable speed will greatly
reduce energy consumption.
3. Avoid going up and over hills whenever possible.
Accelerating up hill uses more energy than finding a
reasonable alternative route around the hill.
4. Reduce the number of starts and stops. It takes
more energy to start from a dead stop than from a
gentle roll.
5. Do not completely discharge the batteries. Battery
damage will result if the unit is operated until it will
not move. If the battery condition meter shows
empty, the batteries need to be recharged.
5.6 START-UP PROCEDURE____________________________________________________
1. The operator must be properly seated to engage the
seat switch and the mow/lift pedal must be in the
raised position before the POWER light will come on.
2. Depress the rear portion of the Mow/Lift pedal to
make sure it is in the RAISE position. Make sure the
Direction/Speed pedal is in neutral (foot off of the
pedal).
3. Turn the key switch all the way to the right until the
POWER light comes on. Release the key and the
switch returns to the ON position for normal
operation. Turn the key left to the OFF position to
shut off the unit and prevent all electrical functions
from operating. IF THE HEADS ARE DOWN, they
will automatically raise when the key is turned to the
start position.
NOTE: Whenever the operator leaves the unit and
returns to the seat, the key switch MUST be turned OFF
and then back to the start position to re–energize the
system. There is a one second delay on the seat switch.
5 OPERATION
12
5.7 ELECTRONIC TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM__________________________________
The E–Plex II is equipped with an electronic closed loop
traction control system which utilizes a microprocessor
and software to regulate speed and optimize the drive
ability of the unit. A speed sensor in the drive motor end
shield reports the exact vehicle speed to the controller
which electronically controls the drive motor to maintain a
smooth and constant speed whether the unit is going
uphill or downhill. When the direction/speed pedal is
returned to neutral, the controller electrically brakes the
motor to bring the unit to a stop. If the unit begins to
over–speed, the controller uses regenerative braking by
essentially turning the drive motor into a generator and
putting energy back into the battery pack. The traction
control system also provides holding torque to prevent
the unit from coasting down hill, even if the operator is
not in the seat. However, using the traction control
system to creep down a long steep hill may overheat
and/or shorten the life of the drive motor. ALWAYS set
the park brake before leaving the unit.
The traction system controller is fully programmable, by
utilizing the hand held programmer (Part No. 893052,
sold separately). Functions such as acceleration,
deceleration, throttle response, speed limits, etc. may
best meet an operator’s preferences. Contact an
authorized dealer or Jacobsen Customer Service for
further information.
5.8 STOPPING / PARKING _____________________________________________________
To stop:
Remove your foot from traction pedal. The unit will
automatically brake when the traction pedal returns to
neutral.
To park the unit under normal conditions:
1. Disengage the reel switch, raise the implements and
move away from the area of operation.
2. Select a flat and level area to park.
a. Release traction pedal to bring the unit to a
complete stop.
b. Disengage all drives, lower implements to the
ground.
3. Engage parking brake.
If an emergency arises and the unit must be parked in the
area of operation, follow the guidelines outlined by the
grounds superintendent. If the unit is parked on an
incline, chock or block the wheels.
5.9 TO DRIVE / TRANSPORT ___________________________________________________
Read and follow all safety notes contained in this manual
when driving or transporting unit. Refer to Section 5.3 for
general operating instructions. When operating in
reverse look behind you to ensure you have a clear path.
Important: If this unit is driven on public roads, it must
comply with federal, state and local ordinances. Contact
local authorities for regulations and equipment
requirements.
1. Disengage all drives and raise implements to the
transport position when driving to and from the area
of operation.
2. Disengage parking brake and move Mow/Transport
switch to “Transport”. Depress traction pedal slowly.
CAUTION
To prevent tipping or loss of control, travel at reduced
speed when making turns.
!
OPERATION 5
13
5.10 HILLSIDE OPERATION _____________________________________________________
The unit has been designed for good traction and stability
under normal mowing conditions; however, use caution
when operating on slopes, especially over rough terrain
or when the grass is wet. Wet grass reduces traction and
steering control.
1. Reduce forward speed to maintain the proper cutting
frequency.
2. If the unit tends to slide or the tires begin to “mark”
the turf, angle unit into a less steep grade until
traction is regained or tire marking stops.
3. If unit continues to slide or mark the turf, the grade
is too steep for safe operation. Do not make another
attempt to climb, back down slowly.
4. When descending a steep slope, always lower
implements to the ground to reduce the risk of unit
overturning.
5. Correct tire pressure is essential for maximum
traction. 12 PSI (83kPa) front, 15 PSI (103kPa)
rear.
5.11 MOWING _________________________________________________________________
NOTE: To prevent damage to the reel and bedknife,
never operate reels when they are not cutting grass.
NOTE: Operators should practice mowing in a clear area
to become familiar with raising and lowering the mowing
heads. They should be aware that the center cutting
head raises and lowers slightly later than the front ones,
this allows the center cut to begin and end at the same
point as the two side cuts. Practicing will help the
operator become proficient at starting and stopping each
pass within a foot or two of the edge of the green. Then
only one final pass around the green will be required to
finish the operation.
NOTE: Always remove the flag and inspect the green
before mowing. Remove debris or other objects that may
damage the reels and/or bedknives.
Several factors may determine the direction of the
mowing pattern. Sand traps or other hazards near the
green and trees or other objects can restrict where turns
are made. The terrain of the green may also be a factor,
but if conditions allow, always try to mow the green in a
different direction than the last time it was mowed.
1. Stop the unit just before reaching the green. Set the
Mow/Transport switch to MOW. Proceed onto the
green at mowing speed and lower the cutting heads
as the front grass catchers cross the edge of the
green. At the end of the pass, raise the heads as the
grass catchers cross the edge of the green.
2. Always make mowing passes across the green in a
straight line. Do NOT start to make the turn for the
next pass until the rear wheel is off the green, this
will eliminate the possibility of the tires tearing the
turf during the turn.
3. Each successive pass should overlap the previous
one by two or three inches. Put a mark on the two
front grass catchers to help align each overlapping
pass.
4. After all of the straight passes have been made,
make one final pass around the outer edge of the
green. This final pass should always be in the
opposite direction from the last time the green was
mowed.
Continued next page
WARNING
To minimize the possibility of overturning, the safest
method for operating on hills and terraces is to travel
up and down the face of the slope (vertically), not
across the face (horizontally). Avoid unnecessary
turns, travel at reduced speeds, stay alert for hidden
hazards, and drop offs.
CAUTION
Do not operate this unit on slopes greater than 15°.
!
!
WARNING
To prevent serious injuries, keep hands, feet and
clothing away from cutting unit when the blades are
moving.
NEVER use your hands to clean cutting units. Use a
brush to remove grass clippings from blades. Blades
can be sharp and could cause injuries.
To clear obstructions from cutting unit, disengage reel
switch, engage parking brake, turn key to OFF position
and remove key from ignition switch then remove
obstruction.
!
5 OPERATION
14
5. Empty the grass catchers before proceeding to the
next green.
a. To remove or install the grass catchers, lower
the cutting units to the ground, engage the
parking brake, and shut off the unit. Tilt the grass
catcher body so the front edge clears the mower
frame, and slide the catcher onto or off the
catcher frame.
6. Stop and raise the mowers to the transport position
when crossing paths or roadways. Look out for
traffic.
NOTE: To avoid damage to the green, NEVER stop the
forward motion of the mower while on the green with the
reels turning. Stopping the mower on a wet green may
cause wheel indentations.
5.12 REAR CUTTING HEAD DELAY_______________________________________________
The raising and lowering of the rear cutting head is
slightly delayed from the front heads. When mowing, this
allows the rear cutting head to contact the ground at the
same location as the front cutting heads, resulting in an
accurate cut. The length of delay is automatically
adjusted for any change in vehicle speed, which is
determined by the speed sensor in the drive motor. If the
unit is not in motion or if there is no speed sensor signal,
the rear cutting head delay will default to a time of
approximately 2 seconds. There is no delay when
manually raising and lowering the rear cutting head with
the reel lift switch on the control panel.
5.13 OVERLOAD PROTECTION __________________________________________________
The reel drive motors and lift actuator are controlled by
the reel control unit in the electrical control module. The
reel control unit has built–in overload protection and will
disable the motor or actuator if it is drawing too much
electrical current. (See Figure No. 4A)
If there is an overload on a reel drive motor, the circuit
breaker will trip, the motor will be disabled, the cutting
head will raise to the up position and the power light on
the control panel will flash (0.5 second cycle).
If there is an overload on a lift actuator, the actuator will
be disabled and the power light on the control panel will
flash (0.5 second cycle).
To reset an overload fault condition, turn the key switch
off and then back to the start position to re–activate the
system. If the problem persists, inspect the device and
the electrical system to determine the cause of the
overload or contact an authorized dealer.
5.14 TOWING / TRAILERING_____________________________________________________
If at all possible, a disabled unit should be loaded onto a
trailer for transport. However, if it becomes necessary to
tow the unit:
1. Remove the cutting heads if they are down and
cannot be raised.
2. Make sure the key switch is OFF and unplug the
main power supply connector (on top of the control
arm).
3. Make sure the park brake is released.
4. Have someone ride on the unit to steer it and
control speed.
NOTE: Towing the unit at excessive speed may damage
the drive motor.
WARNING
Tow ONLY at a safe speed, do NOT exceed 5 MPH
(8km/h). Towing at an excessive speed may cause
either unit to lose steering control.

5.15 DAILY MAINTENANCE______________________________________________________
IMPORTANT: For more detailed maintenance
information, adjustments and maintenance/lubrication
charts, see the Parts & Maintenance manual.
1. Park the unit on a flat, level surface. Fully lower the
implements to the ground, engage parking brake,
turn key to OFF position and remove key.
2. Grease and lubricate all points if required. To
prevent fires, wash the cutting units and unit after
each use.
a. Use only fresh water for cleaning your
equipment.
NOTE: Use of salt water or affluent water has been
known to encourage rust and corrosion of metal parts
resulting in premature deterioration or failure. Damage of
this nature is not covered by the factory warranty.
b. Do not use high pressure spray.
c. Do not spray water directly at the instrument
panel, or any electrical components.
