Spectra Logic from one or more software licensors (“Software Suppliers”). Such
software products, as well as associated media, printed materials and “online” or
electronic documentation (“SOFTWARE”) are protected by copyright laws and
international copyright treaties, as well as other intellectual property laws and treaties.
If you do not agree to this end user license agreement (EULA), do not use the Spectra
Product; instead, promptly contact Spectra Logic for instructions on return of the Spectra
Product for a refund. Any use of the Software, including but not limited to use on the
Spectra Product, will constitute your agreement to this EULA (or ratification of any
previous consent).
Grant of License. The Software is licensed on a non-exclusive basis, not sold. This EULA
grants you the following rights to the Software:
You may use the Software only on the Spectra Product.
Not Fault Tolerant. The Software is not fault tolerant. Spectra Logic has independently
determined how to use the Software in the Spectra Product, and suppliers have relied
upon Spectra Logic to conduct sufficient testing to determine that the Software is
suitable for such use.
No Warranties for the SOFTWARE. The Software is provided “AS IS” and with all
faults. The entire risk as to satisfactory quality, performance, accuracy, and effort
(including lack of negligence) is with you. Also, there is no warranty against
interference with your enjoyment of the Software or against infringement. If you have
received any warranties regarding the SOFTWARE, those warranties do not originate
from, and are not binding on Software suppliers.
Note on Java Support. The Software may contain support for programs written in Java.
Java technology is not fault tolerant and is not designed, manufactured, or intended for
use of resale as online control equipment in hazardous environments requiring fail-safe
performance, such as in the operation of nuclear facilities, aircraft navigation or
communications systems, air traffic control, direct life support machines, or weapons
systems, in which the failure of Java technology could lead directly to death, personal
injury, or severe physical or environmental damage.
No Liability for Certain Damages. Except as prohibited by law, Software suppliers
shall have no liability for any indirect, special, consequential or incidental damages
arising from or in connection with the use or performance of the Software. This
limitation shall apply even if any remedy fails of its essential purpose. In no event shall
Software suppliers, individually, be liable for any amount in excess of U.S. two hundred
fifty dollars (U.S. $250.00).
Limitations on Reverse Engineering, Decompilation, and Disassembly. You may not
reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Software, except and only to the extent
that such activity is expressly permitted by applicable law notwithstanding this
limitation.
Software Transfer Allowed with Restrictions. You may permanently transfer rights
under this EULA only as part of a permanent sale or transfer of the Spectra nTier700,
and only if the recipient agrees to this EULA. If the Software is an upgrade, any transfer
must also include all prior versions of the Software.
Export Restrictions. Export of the Software from the United States is regulated by the
Export Administration Regulations (EAR, 15 CFR 730-744) of the U.S. Commerce
Department, Bureau of Export Administration. You agree to comply with the EAR in
the export or re-export of the Software: (i) to any country to which the U.S. has
embargoed or restricted the export of goods or services, which as May 1999 include, but
are not necessarily limited to Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, and
the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (including Serbia, but not Montenegro), or to any
national or any such country, wherever located, who intends to transit or transport the
Software back to such country; (ii) to any person or entity who you know or have
reason to know will utilize the Software or portion thereof in the design, development
or production of nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons; or (iii) to any person or
entity who has been prohibited from participating in U.S. export transactions by any
federal agency of the U.S. government. You warrant and represent that neither the BXA
nor any other U.S. federal agency has suspended, revoked or denied your export
privileges. For additional information see www.microsoft.com/exporting/.

LIBRARY CONFIGURATION
IP Addressing
The Spectra T50e library is shipped with Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol (DHCP) enabled. Therefore, the library’s IP address is
automatically assigned by DHCP server.
The IP address of the library displays in the upper right corner of the User
Interface (front panel). If you wish to change the Network settings of the
library, the library must be connected to the network prior to powering the
library on.
If you need to change the library’s Network settings, you can do this via the
front panel (LC) or RLC by navigating to the Configuration > Network
screen.
Partition Creation
If you want to configure the library with more than one partition, you must
purchase a Shared Library Services (SLS) option key.
LIBRARY FIRMWARE
Package Servers
Both Microsoft’s Internet Information Services (IIS) and the Unix-based
Apache server work as package servers. (Package server configuration
information is defined in the library’s user guide.)
Firmware Versions
Always ensure that you have the most current firmware for both the
library and the installed tape drives.
1. Check the firmware versions—read the Spectra T50e User Guide at
www.spectralogic.com/documents for instructions.
2. Download the latest firmware—go to

LIBRARY TROUBLESHOOTING
AutoSupport User
The default AutoSupport user (a[email protected]) is
dedicated to opening support tickets. It cannot receive auto-generated
messages. Any configuration settings that send messages to the default
AutoSupport user are deleted unless specifically requested by
SpectraGuard support.
Start-Up
When there are messages to report at login, the LC displays the Messages
screen first. Read the messages and take action as necessary, then navigate
to other screens.
The library always displays the messages screen at the initial installation.
Power off During Error
If the system is unstable at power off—you power off the library when
it is in an error state—the power off time will take approximately one
minute and will show no indication that it is powering off. Wait for the
sequence to complete.
If the library does not power off after two minutes, press and hold the
front panel power button for ten seconds to invoke the emergency power
off process.
MEDIA LIFECYCLE MANAGEMENT (MLM)
If more than 100 tapes are used in the library, the oldest tapes will be

HARDWARE COMPONENTS
LTO-4 Tape Drives
Updates to the LTO-4 Drive Firmware
After you update your library firmware to BlueScale10.3.1 or later, confirm
that your LTO-4 drives are using the correct firmware version. Check the
Tape Drive Firmware and Drivers page on the Spectra Logic web site at

firmware version and update the firmware if necessary.
Spectra Logic recommends using firmware version 8940 or above for
IBM LTO-4 tape drives.
IBM LTO-4 drives must be running firmware version 8940 or above
when using Netbackup 6.5.2 or later.
Caution
Spectra Logic only supports media produced by IBM, HP, Fuji, Maxell, Sony, and
TDK. For best results, purchase Certified Media from Spectra Logic.
Before using media from vendors other than those listed above, contact
SpectraGuard Technical support to understand the risk associated with use of
unsupported media.

Drive Status Reporting for LTO-4 Tape Drives
If you need to determine the state of the status LED on the tape drive, use
the IBM Tape Diagnostic Tool (ITDT). You can download ITDT directly
from www.ibm.com. Once you are on IBM’s web site, search for ITDT to
locate and download the software and the user guide. Contact Spectra
Guard Support if you need assistance (see Contacting Spectra Logic on
page 4).
Note: Make sure you install ITDT on a server that can directly access
the library’s tape drives.
Fibre Channel WWN Naming Conventions
The World Wide Node Name (WWNN) and World Wide Port Name
(WWPN) identify a Fibre Channel tape drive and its Fibre Channel ports
respectively on a Fibre Channel network. The WWNN and WWPN are
each a sequence of eight, two-digit hexadecimal numbers generated by the
library.
Using Dual-Port Fibre Channel LTO-4 Tape Drives
The IBM LTO-4 Fibre Channel drives currently shipping with the library
are equipped with two Fibre Channel ports. Although the two ports on an
LTO-4 Fibre Channel drive cannot be used simultaneously, they can be used
to provide failover capability in the event that communication to the port
currently in use is interrupted. This failover can be can be accomplished
several ways, including:
Manually disconnect the fiber optic cable from the failed port and
connect it to the other port. You may need to reconfigure your host
software to recognize the alternate port.
The LTO-4 drives numbers are as follows...
World Wide Node
Name (WWNN) The WWNN for LTO-4 drives uses the form 21:1w:00:90:A5:00:xx:xx, where:
w = the drive number
xx:xx = a unique serial number
World Wide Port
Name (WWPN) The WWPN for LTO-4 drives uses the form 2y:1w:00:90:A5:00:xx:xx, where:
y = the port number
w = the drive number
xx:xx = a unique serial number
Set the value for Port B by copying the value for Port A and changing the value
of the second digit in the first pair of hexadecimal numbers from 1 to 2.
For example:
WWPN for Port A = 21:1w:00:90:A5:00:xx:xx.
WWPN for Port B = 22:1w:00:90:A5:00:xx:xx

Connect each port on the drive to a separate Fibre Channel HBA in the
host. You can also use a dual-port Fibre Channel HBA. Configure one
HBA (or HBA port) as the primary connection and the other HBA (or
HBA port) as the failover connection. Install failover software on the
servers host computer to control the transfer of I/O from one HBA to
the other in case of a failure. Refer to your failover software and HBA
documentation for instructions.
Connect each port on the drive to a separate Fibre Channel switch or
hub. Configure one switch (or hub) as the primary connection and the
other switch (or hub) as the failover connection. Install failover
software on the servers host computer to control the transfer of I/O
from one connection to the other in case of a failure. Refer to you
failover software and switch or hub documentation for instructions.
Power Cable
The power cord included with this unit is considered part of this unit and
cannot be used with any other equipment.
The Spectra Logic power cord (PN 8296) may be used with this product so
you can plug the library into a Power Distribution Unit (PDU) in the rack.
Using USB Storage Devices
A user can plug a USB storage device into the LCM for transferring
information to and from the library. Do not leave a USB storage device
plugged into the LCM indefinitely, unless directed by Spectra Logic
Technical Support.
Note: Not all USB storage devices are compatible with the library. If
you are unable to access a USB storage device from the library,
remove it and use a different one. If the LCM stops responding
after you insert an incompatible USB storage device, reboot the
library as described in the Spectra T50e User Guide.
Removing Media from Magazines
Use the small holes in the back of the magazines to push the media out of
the slots.
Integration Tips
Spectra Logic does not support the use of the Adaptec 29320 SCSI card
with any Spectra Logic library. Note, however, that the Adaptec 29320A
SCSI is supported.
Ensure that you add LUN support to any SCSI HBA that you plan to use
with the library.

Spectra T50e Library Firmware
LIBRARY FIRMWARE SUPPORT PROCESS
The support model for Spectra Logic firmware is implemented as follows:
Current Shipping Release Any issues found in the current release of
firmware are resolved either with a patch or a new release, depending on
the types of changes needed. The current release is completely supported.
One Release Prior to the Current Release Support strongly recommends
that customers using the previous release of firmware upgrade to the
current release. If the customer is unwilling or unable to do this, Spectra
Logic provides patches to the previous release.
Two Releases Prior to the Current Release Customers are asked to upgrade
to the current release. There must be an extremely compelling reason to
avoid upgrading. Patches to firmware that is two releases prior to the
current release are extremely rare.
LIBRARY FIRMWARE UPDATE PROCESS
See the Spectra T50e Library User Guide for information about updating the
library firmware. For the most current version of the library firmware,
check the Spectra Logic web site at www.spectralogic/downloads.
Firmware Package History
The following pages list changes in Spectra T50e library firmware packages
for new features and updates that affect the library and its components.
Note: Unless otherwise stated, the known issues remain active until
moved to the resolved issues section. Always read the known
issues section for each firmware release to make sure you are
aware of any potential problems.
Firmware Package Order and Naming
This document lists releases in a reverse chronological order, with the most
recent release listed first. Firmware packages created in 2005 are called
BlueScale, and are released with a package number starting at 9.0 and
progressing higher from there.
All package names are followed with the date of release (YYYYMMDD
format), and either an F for Full Release or an I for Incremental Release.

Enhancements
BlueScale10.5 adds the following new features:
Media Lifecycle Management
Hardware Health Maintenance
Enhanced AutoSupport features
See the Spectra T50e User Guide for a detailed description of how these new
features work in the library.
Resolved Issues
You can now move a cartridge to the Access port remotely via the RLC.
When attempting to recycle tapes using the Encryption feature, the
Tapes to Recycle > Delete All button now works.
Caution Starting with BlueScale 10.3.1 firmware, IBM LTO-4 tape drives must be using
firmware version 8940 or above.
Important Changes to the way a library generates the World Wide Node Name (WWNN) and
World Wide Port Names (WWPN) for LTO-4 Fibre Channel drives will affect your SAN
or HBA configurations.
Important The IBM LTO-4 Fibre Channel drives currently shipping with the library are
equipped two Fibre Channel ports. Read Using Dual-Port Fibre Channel LTO-4 Tape
Drives on page 15 for important information. To enable and use the dual ports:
Your library must be using BlueScale10.3.1 or later firmware.
The LTO-4 Fibre Channel drives must be using firmware version 8940 or later
(see Updates to the LTO-4 Drive Firmware on page 14).
If an LTO-4 Fibre Channel drive is connected to a SAN using zoning or to an HBA
using persistent binding, you may also need to update your SAN or HBA
configuration to include the WWPN for Port B.
