and the waste management of such products.
When disposing of a device, including all of its components, subassemblies, and materials that are an
integral part of the product, you should consider the WEEE directive.
The symbol to the right has been attached to the equipment or, if this has not been
possible, on the packaging, instruction literature, and/or the guarantee sheet. By using
this symbol, it states that the device has been marketed after August 13, 2005 and implies
that you must separate all of its components when possible and dispose of them in
accordance with local waste disposal legislations.
Because of the substances present in the equipment, improper use or disposal of the refuse can

Hardware Specification
Display Interface
With the add-in VGA Expansion Board, the Catalyst FX supports VGA or Standard Definition
Television (SDTV) displays. A standard VGA Expansion Board provides an analog RGB output, while
support for S-Video and CVBS formats is available as a volume production option. The following
sections describe these capabilities.
Analog RGB
To support a standard VGA monitor, an on-board Chrontel CH7317A Display Converter accepts the
Serial Digital Video Output (SDVO) from the Catalyst Module, encodes the data, and drives the analog
RGB port. Signals from three 10-bit DACs internal to the display converter are mapped onto eight-bit
color channels for red, green, and blue data. This RGB port is available on connector J8, page 15.
For electrical specifications, see Analog RGB, page 17.
In addition to the 8:8:8 RGB data, the display converter provides a Display Data Channel (DDC)
interface on connector J8 for monitor Plug and Play.
For further details about the SDVO capabilities, refer to the Catalyst Module Design-In Guide
(Eurotech document #110122-2003).
S-Video (optional) or CVBS (optional)
As a volume production option, a Chrontel CH7021/CH7022, which supports analog SDTV formats,
replaces the Chrontel CH7317A. With this option, the VGA Expansion Board provides either an S-
Video port on connector J10, page 15 or a CVBS port on header J9, page 15.
Audio Interface
For its audio interface, the VGA Expansion Board uses an Intel
®
High Definition Audio (Intel HD Audio)
compatible codec providing high quality audio in an embedded environment. The following sections
describe the audio inputs and outputs provided by this codec. For electrical specifications, see Audio
Interface, page 17.
Audio Inputs: Stereo Line In and Microphone
The VGA Expansion Board supports a stereo line in on RCA jacks J3, page 14 and J4, page 14 and a
microphone on RCA jack J2, page 13. As a volume production option, header J13, page 16 providing
connection to a microphone internal to an enclosure replaces microphone jack J2.
Audio Outputs: Stereo Line Out, Speaker, and S/PDIF
The VGA Expansion Board drives a stereo line out on RCA jacks J5, page 14 and J7, page 14. These
outputs also drive two on-board audio power amplifiers supporting a stereo speaker output on header
J11, page 15 and header J12, page 16. A standard VGA Expansion Board includes header J11, while
header J12 is included as a volume production option.
Notes:
The optional speaker output on header J12 and the line in right input on jack J4 are mutually
exclusive. A standard VGA Expansion Board includes jack J4 supporting a stereo line in.
In addition, the codec provides a Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format (S/PDIF) output on header
J6, page 14 for connectivity to consumer electronic equipment.
Hardware Specification

Mounting Holes
The VGA Expansion Board includes four mounting holes that enable mounting to the Catalyst FX
carrier board. Three of the four mounting holes connect electrically to the ground plane through 0
resistors. The mounting hole located in the bottom, right corner, below the U-shaped cut out does not
connect electrically to the ground plane. For reliable ground connections, use locking washers and
make sure that washers do not extend beyond the limits of the pads provided.
